» Port of Skagit granted trademark for Genuine Skagit Valley mark

By Kathi O Shea February 12, 2021 8:26 am KGMI Courtesy of Port of Skagit MOUNT VERNON, Wash.  A certification mark that promotes Skagit Valley agricultural products has received its trademark. The Skagit Valley Herald reports the Port of Skagit was granted the trademark for its Genuine Skagit Valley mark. The Genuine Skagit Valley program is designed to increase consumer awareness and consumption of Skagit Valley agricultural related products and services. Since 2019, agricultural producers have been incorporating the mark on their product packaging, signs, social media pages and websites. The Genuine Skagit Valley program now has more than 50 members that include farmers, cheese makers, seafood producers, brewers and others.

» Forest Service asks for information regarding firefighting equipment theft

By Kathi O Shea February 8, 2021 7:02 am KGMI MOUNT VERNON, Wash.  The U.S. Forest Service is asking for information regarding a theft from the Koma Kulshan Guard Station near the south end of Baker Lake. The station was broken into late last year and $45,000 of equipment used for wildfire fighting was stolen. That equipment was used by a specialized wildfire-fighting team. A Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie Ranger District spokesperson told the Skagit Valley Herald the team will not be able to do its critical firefighting work during the 2021 season without the stolen gear being returned or replaced. The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the theft.

February 5, 2021 7:41 am clipart.com BURLINGTON, Wash.  The Burlington Police and Fire Departments will invest in new equipment, thanks to a donation from a Skagit County business. Country Financial of Burlington donated $8,000 to the two departments as part of its annual Operation Helping Heroes fundraiser. The Skagit Valley Herald reports the Fire Department will purchase a new automatic external defibrillator with its share of the donation. The Police Department will use its share to purchase two need speed display signs for use in school zones.

Crews raise sunken ferry that crashed into Guemes terminal ANACORTES (AP) Crews have raised the first ferry of the Alaska Marine Highway System after the retired vessel sank in Guemes Channel at Anacortes in Skagit County. The Skagit Valley Herald reports that the Chilkat was lifted by a crane and placed on a barge on Wednesday, and Global Diving and Salvage was contracted to remove the ship.
