Thousands of medical procedures, appointments and scans scheduled for next week have been cancelled following a cyberattack on the health service.
University Hospital Waterford says the attack on the HSE’s IT systems has resulted in considerable delays at their Emergency Department and impacted their ability to deliver normal outpatient services.
Management at UHW and at Kilcreen Regional Hospital are advising that all outpatient appointments for Monday the 17th of May – including Radiology and Cardiology – are now cancelled.
All surgical procedures and endoscopy services have also been cancelled.
The Irish Times reports that the Health Service Executive (HSE) has said the disruption caused by the attack on its IT system will last well into next week, with it to be at least three days before the scale of the damage is clear.
When Rachel Yaull was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma skin cancer in May 2019 at the age of 52, she was told had she been diagnosed 10 years earlier, she would have been advised to âget her affairs in orderâ.
However, the development of immunotherapy has revolutionised the treatment of advanced melanoma skin cancer and, today, three years on from her life-changing diagnosis, Rachel is cancer free.
Rachel was treated with surgery and immunotherapy which she took for 12 months, and while the side effects were gruelling at times she is now back at work and living a life that 10 years earlier she would almost certainly have been denied. âI am extremely thankful and feel so incredibly lucky that I was eligible for immunotherapy treatment which has given me my life back.â
