The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of a 71-year-old inmate at the detention center.
Sheriff Wes Tripp said foul play is not suspected.
In a statement the sheriff said around 12:30 p.m. today Ronald Anthony McDonald of the Enfield area experienced a medical issue. Tripp declined to elaborate on the medical issue.
Detention staff called Halifax County EMS which transported the man to a local hospital where he later succumbed.

Alton, Va. – A Halifax County woman is behind bars, charged with murder after investigators say she intentionally ran over a man found lying in the yard of a home.
Sheriff’s deputies and Virginia State Police were dispatched just after 6:30 Sunday morning after receiving a report of an unconscious male.
The South Boston News and Record reports that officers found the victim in the yard of a home on Traynam Grove Road in Alton, Va. Investigators determined that the man had been intentionally struck by a vehicle and charged 33-year-old Chantel Annette Canada of Clover with second-degree murder.
Sheriff’s investigators arrested Canada on Monday and charged her with the homicide. Canada is being held in Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Halifax without bond.
