Grade: 4.0/5.0 Part of The New York Times Op-Docs series, the Oscar-nominated documentary “A Concerto Is a Conversation” is a sweet short film directed by Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers. Bowers, a virtuoso jazz pianist and film composer, stars in the 13-minute film, which centers on a conversation with his 91-year-old grandfather, Horace Bowers, Sr. The camera captures the conversation through straight-on shots, where the two protagonists chat, laugh and listen with their eye line directly on the viewer. It’s a unique directorial style that takes a moment to find the right rhythm, but in its best moments, it affects heart-warming sincerity.
