My parents both came from Quaker backgrounds and were married in the Quaker tradition – a simple ceremony at home without clergy.
Although we were not brought up as Quakers, we were steeped in Quaker traditions – including the savage persecution of the "Friends," as they prefer to be called, by the 17th Century Puritans at Salem.
One of our ancestors, Provided Southwick, was reportedly sold into slavery by Governor Endicott, but escaped that fate when no ship captain could be found to carry her away to the Caribbean slave marts. John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker, celebrated that event in a dramatic poem, “Cassandra Southwick,” which we all read and memorized.
