For the last 40 years, the school district has deferred the Adult Basic Education volunteer program to the Alexandria Literacy Project. They have embraced and shared literacy support to a magnitude of adult learners throughout Alexandria, according to Alexandria Public Schools leaders. As a result of the dissolution, Alexandria Public Schools Community Education, will assume responsibility for the majority of the volunteer program under the Adult Basic Education program. Community Education statute states that ABE programs should train and use volunteers in the Adult Basic Education. It is common in Minnesota for community education programs to support volunteer programs.
