Minister tells e. U. Leaders and only meet them if they change their position on bricks at. And there were seen some pretty violent storms across the some portions of europe and im afraid to say that we could well see a few more yet you can see all this chatter on the satellite that is containing some scattered showers and thunderstorms a good season strong winds in there and also have a system here working its way into the southwest of the u. K. And that could also bring with it not only some rain but also some potentially strong thunderstorms at times so this is the picture on cheese day at temperatures not too bad 26 in paris 29 in syria he can see where the rain in the clouds will be so it should be not too bad in paris maybe just increase in the cat as the day goes on but really the bulk of the rains are going to be called seasonal central and eastern sections and youll notice the temperature in moscow this temperature is actually set to decline even further over the next few days 16 degrees on choose that with some cad the chances and shows and sunny cloudy day on wednesday and 15 degrees is about the best youll see thats about 8 degrees below the average for this time of year elsewhere on wednesday much of Central Europe still under quite a bit of cloud there is the chance they want to shaz again we could see a thunderstorm and then add to cross the northwest again is there all the cloudy unsubtle way across much of the u. Who that potential 2nd suspect is and what exactly that persons role was donald trump assigned a new law giving permanent benefits to 1st responders who became ill in the aftermath of the september 11th attacks the legislation guarantees federal funding through to 2092 for more than 18000 people who will qualify for the benefits 1st responders who rushed to the site of the twin towers in new york and others who worked for months clearing up were exposed to toxic chemicals causing serious illness and hundreds of deaths meanwhile the u. S. President says further fuel racial tensions in america are attacking the u. S. Civil rights leader reverend al sharpton at the president s fight of new tweets hours before shelton was due to speak in baltimore the mostly black city trump has derived it as a rodent infested mess a trump said hes not in the reverend for 25 years and that he often asked him for favors for the president then called him a con man and a troublemaker and he accused him of hating whites and Police Offices well shelton hit back on twitter saying if he was a con man hed be in trumps cabinet he also had this to say at a News Conference. He attacks everybody i know donald trump hes not mature enough to take criticism he cant help it hes like a child somebody Say Something he reacts he stands skin and not really mature that well but he has a put to kill the venom for blacks and people of color he didnt refer to any of his other opponents or critics as infested lets talk to our White House Correspondent kimberly how couldnt complete the president and yet another twitter spot. Yeah in another spat and the question is why this one why now because it seems to come on the heels of attacks on 4 congresswoman of color democratic congresswoman that he told to leave if they dont like the United States given the fact that only one of them was foreign born many people also believe strongly that this was yet another attempt by the u. S. President to divide america and americans along racial lines in terms of why sort of this latest chapter the attack on the city of baltimore over the weekend now the civil rights leader reverend al sharpton many people say this is a political calculation by the president he knows that. Largely africanamericans tend to be living in urban centers that largely vote democratic these folks are not going to vote for donald trump to begin with so he feels that by pointing out some of the things about some of these cities hes also done about chicago pointing out Violent Crime there that this is in some ways is going to make him stand out as a politician the problem is that all of this is that it is just reopening wounds in the United States that just never seem to heal when it comes to its history of being founded on slavery and so this is particularly hurtful to so many populations that filled with this president should be uniting the country but is doing just the opposite and what about within the Republican Party is over there how much support would that be for the president. Well you know theres a lot of attempt by the Republican Party to dismiss this is nothing more than the president s hyperbole oh thats donald being donald kind of thing and the reason for that is because on some level some of the things donald trump says sometimes are factually correct not always in the case of baltimore certainly it is a troubled city it has had a mayor recently leaving scandal it does have a very high Violent Crime rate chicago as well but at the same time pulling back from all of this is what this does is it galvanizes Donald Trumps base by dividing us and them this is a calculated electoral strategy that works for donald trump and 2016 hes already looking ahead campaigning to 2020 even though he doesnt officially have a democratic president ial candidate to oppose him the reason for all of this is that in the complicated american system its an Electoral College strategy he may not win the popular vote this way but he could win the white house this way and so thats appears to be what hes trying to do yet again even though the election is still so far away or at him really thanks very much in the neighborhood there in washington d. C. Britains new Prime Minister is refusing to meets e. U. Leaders and till they agree to reopen the bridge with rule agreements Boris Johnson has been holding talks in scotland with the 1st minister nicholas shes accused johnson of pursuing in the deal breaker she says will be deeply damaging for the whole of the United Kingdom but in baba reports now from and abroad. Using a smattering of applause for the u. K. Prime minister as he rifa told to scotlands 1st minister yes then shook hands but they were never going to see eye to eye even before he arrived Nicola Sturgeon warns Boris Johnson he could be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom if he delivered no deal breaks it its fair to say these 2 politicians have a very different vision of the future. After their meeting at her official residence she repeated her warning behind all the bluff and bluster this government and the path that it is pursuing i think is dangerous it became clear to me that this government the new Prime Minister has set the uki on an almost inevitable path to a new deal breaks at the position that it has taken that makes it very difficult to see how any deal can be stopped with the e. U. And i think that would be catastrophic for scotland and indeed for the whole of the u. K. At a naval base near Glasgow Johnson outlined plans for new investment in parts of scotland wales and Northern Ireland worth almost 400000000. 00 but his governments also spending more than 100000000. 00 on an Advertising Campaign informing the public about a no deal breaks it and he says he will meet e. U. Leaders if they dont agree to revisit the Withdrawal Agreement and scrap the socalled backstop designed to prevent a hard border in Northern Ireland what we want to do is to make it absolutely clear that the backstop is no good it did its got to get there with broad agreement is dead its got to go but there is scope to do a new deal before meeting the 1st minister Boris Johnson headed to the Scottish Parliament for another tense meeting with the leader of the Scottish Branch of the conservative Party Ruth Davidson she says she supports the Prime Minister but has firmly rejected the idea of a no deal breaks it arguing nobody advocated it in the 2060 Referendum Campaign her allies are warning the johnson governments approach could boost support for independence which is already on the rise as a party for independence and gotten almost 50 percent if not a majority but theres a serious conflict between the 2 governments then that could provoke another independence referendum maybe not immediately but after the next scottish elections the Scottish Government a far from the only people warning johnson hes in danger in the union whether they try to hold another independence vote in the near future could depend on whether politicians in westminster are able to stop him the dean barber al jazeera edinburgh where the british pound has fallen to a 28 month low against the dollar as Brian Johnson toughens his rhetoric on breaks it analysts say the currency could fall further as fears grow over the possibility of a new deal. There are todays top stories next up the stream looks at nigerias Mental Health crisis. And today a Mental Health crisis in 90 area a group that Mental Health advocates discuss the unconventional approach as helping to tackle the problem and we want to hear your thoughts. Comment on our live chat. And the story. 3 in 10 nigerians suffer from Mental Health issues according to the countrys ministry of Health Advice also is to help those in need scaff so many Mental Health advocates of take an unconventional approach is to tackling the kind i says joining us to discuss this in a blue gen one geria delta or i know hes a social called me to have researched psychologists with the name a foundation and legos how it davao she is executive director and founder of the she writes woman which aims to raise awareness about Mental Illness by giving a voice to those struggling and my daughter am dr ibrahim hes a medical director at the federal Psychiatric Hospital in delivery it is one of only 8 public Mental Health facilities in the entire country and in london dr victor hugo hes the founder of the mentally aware nigeria nice to have on money its good to have you everybody thanks for joining us in the stream victim going to do some of that is not very often on t. V. In nigeria and that is for somebody to talk about their Mental Health can you tell us just very briefly how you tackled your Mental Health challenge what happened to you how did you solve it. You know i dont think a lot but. I dont think up so good. How it built with it being more like. When i was a question i had a lot of support from my friends from your row and that went very long in my record. Journey and ive got the. Only reason why we got a community of people would have been issues that we can know our own kind of what each other if we were looking to add a at the extent of Mental Health challenges in nigeria how would you explain the landscape what is it like a street like. I think a lot of the im concerned about the Mental Health challenges and im sure as a result of the crisis in the northeast to put things in perspective over 7000000 people have been affected in 3 states the northeastern ranger out of the 7000000 people 1. 76 people have been displaced from the ancestral homes people from teachers to farmers to government walkers and session and lost everything that around this people suffering its a really massive channel with the occasional secondly since and such is the pression in science and stress of a lot of them have very little life left and its however the crisis in ones here is not only in the northeast summer conflicts all across the country the conflict in the northwest of the bandits and we saw space conflicts as a farmer had a crisis in the middle belts this crisis and the ones that elders was also resourceful cultism and so forth and so these conflicts in huge the Mental Health challenges are a serious problem in the country together with the economic situation. And i hear what youre saying there and yet there are a few i handful i will say there are not that many there are a few people online who are not quite convinced that the numbers are adding up or that the level of people wanting to seek Mental Health care or dealing with Mental Illness are what the government says they are so i wanted to share this from keith who says our Government Officials are known for cooking up numbers to the numbers come from a personal observation from a village or legitimate survey if so how was the survey conducted what region was focused on she goes on to say in a country where Mental Health is viewed as a taboo topic im curious to know who they talk to i do graphs from the question Mental Health is a very important topic thats needed to be tackled with a sense of urgency but these numbers just dont add up for me and the number she is talking about is the 3 in 10 nigerians who reportedly suffer from Mental Health issues dr ibrahim can you talk to us about what we know about the landscape what we know about those numbers. Thank you very much for the. I share with a concern but theres a Mental Health issue in the not east but equally would display spent over over 2000000 people by the insurgency and particularly with the destruction of infrastructure as both a primary and secondary abels in both state and youll be state and of course in some parts of a demo stage and theres growth deficiency of Mental Health facilities in nigeria the only Mental Health hospital that is on where the federal government is the federal psychiatry close to 20 m. A degree that has full what trichet 1000000 people and also growth the fishes said chatteris to nigeria with a populated project took relational over 200000000 people nigel read correctly has gone dead 200 reps i kept freeze which makes their racial facade cat free tool the population of about one to a 1000000000 which is grossly inadequate can pitch to the space center bluefish hole. One second to 10000 population and of cause images of. Course Traumatic Stress disorder that would be inside jesse and of course recently has been on such a suicide rate which of course its indicative of detroit rich in Mental Health condition but the little dollar g. And the methods they use in iraq and other peoples i think. Needs much to be desired how its almost impossible to talk about Mental Illness as if its just one kind of illness but from your perspective when you look at suffering or having a Mental Illness. Who do you go to whos that to help thank you very much for having. I think 1st that these landscape of Mental Health and the deer is very different mental and generally speaking we hope your systems are ones that its what is functional us so its a very so for the average length human we will pull yes this is a doctor when you want something along the way in or going to a steak but another its harms the general practitioners or you know conventional doctors that beats you what the symptoms you know Mental Health problems and it just becomes really hard i mean of course we also have other parts of social portal we just. The sort of enable and counter any form of awareness so its kind of a you want to explain what that means because its a very easy sentence to say social cultural and it just fact is as if Everybody Knows every nigerian mono this but internationally around the well pick one of that is and explain what you mean. Ok so for example a look at the religious aspect. Of people would say its one of our biggest weaknesses and one of our biggest and says well so for example you would hear somebody who had partial their own will but i dont i dont have the questions like i wanted a session or you know i mean you see evidence of the fact that there are so many traditional and healing comes across brain duryea where people have been known and be their rights are being valued because we have a psycho social disability or a Mental Health mission and so belief is that a leg out of you that maybe did dream on and things like that so we see those kinds of not so thats just one aspect of we just. Kind of now it seems and maybe people sort of shifting the way people think about Mental Health in sense that if i know that im going with something i wouldnt want because yes what i want to be i dont want to tell a lie with another its been something i wont be needing in terms of spirits you know possessed me or demons and perhaps im not so good at it kinds of things that will get you but generally its what you worry about is suspended by barry. And thats one of the things that we try to be for Mental Health care especially at the Grassroots Level for Example Department help and at the grassroots Mental Health care where people can say ok im dealing with this i dont even know what it is but im the professionals the whole perfectionist a petition is will be able to spot seats and be able to say this is a mental how well arent we i dont see that happening until how im glad you brought that up because we got this comment from someone watching on you tube this is Alexander Anderson who says we have to bring in religious leaders into this conversation and i pray at mosques and not once have i heard the issue of Mental Health being discussed i cant speak for churches here but he goes on to say usually they religious leaders tell you to pray and thats it i think there should be an open discussion about how prayer doesnt always solve our Mental Health challenges so lets dig right into that topics the stigma that goes along with this and the things that are not so helpful that others in the community might tell you to do dr b h u r talk take that on. I think the backlash against research one in 3 nigerians suffer from Mental Health issues that really indicate a problem. When when we were on our case in consideration campaigns i would try to make people aware that Mental Health problems are just like physical Health Problems they can range from physical problems from a headache to full blown cancer to the same feeling or Mental Health grange through perhaps my other question to full blown psychosis right but when one jury here we dont we have a very myopic view of Mental Health illness we feel anybody that suffers from a Mental Health issue. And they have various names of it for its you know they would say the ones on mars that are nonkululeko and on men so just several names just really really minor pick that i think we have a long way to go ahead and sensitize in line here is that Mental Health issues can range from leaving mild to to really severe problems in the country of israel how do you take that on and as a as a federal medical director this is your job to maybe work out how the government can help nigerians handle and treat Mental Illness how do you take on that stigma its really really. Yes. Its a very violent observation that nigerians generally have a misconception a misperception about Mental Illness but the federal government on its cut particularly has been doing a lot the levels of health care in nigeria i divide it into a tree thats the primary health care which is handled as a fully by the local government areas and the 2nd recover care which is statutorily 100 by the. States and then the pressure of health care which is to what the federal government the federal government has established about it myristic catholic hospitals in the country to catch up with the geopolitical zones and the federal government has oversaw. The Specialty Hospital into train in a primary health care walk into provision of mental help said this is a grassroots truly Mental Health Global Action plan into the haitian gets in several parts of the country several primary Health Care Primary Health Care Workers have been trained on detection and the intervention of Mental Illness is such a drag strip level and secondly has been an integration of Mental Health into trouble medical care what i mean by this is that there has been engagement of traditional rulers and of course to some extent trainings have been conducted for spiritual leaders such as past us humans in such and parts of the country i can clearly just to the for the to this intervention in what is termed part of nigeria in which so far weve trained over 250 primary Health Care Workers and weve also ready just does such as the past us and humans in a truly disturbed. Much as it should strategy i think this will go along we didnt post if impacts if the temple is sustained and if its in the get. Of course that would help perspectives like this is showing is that there is a stigma attached to having Mental Health issues here and along with that comes a conspirator tauriel shroud of silence so its that idea that you cant talk about it that we got a video comment from someone who picks up on that idea this is and is that media personality in the interior and heres what he told us. When it comes to Mental Health the nigeria people believe that its a curse that a witch in your village somehow put it on you to dish and over the ages and cultural reasons people dont give Mental Health the respect or the attention that needs luckily for today the stigma is changing a bit but definitely not enough there are people who have access to more education because of the internet because of social media because of n. G. O. S and doctors but that is just maybe the one percent of the one percent so dr victor she says its changing and i would venture to say its changing in part because of organizations like yours you have trained counselors ready to talk to people tell us about how that works. Yes so so we started up this. Text line 2 years ago and since then weve managed to reach out to more than 10028 months and what happens is that we have psychologists and counselors who are trained in problem solving therapy. On what causes whats up with basically and when we get messages on if theyre going to eat a week we connect people to need help and services to these counselors who we have trained already and you know more or less like you know supervising faceted conversations between them and. Family increasing the think people are reaching out for sure but i wouldnt say that. My. Getting any better or would i see it as stigma is actually the problem i mean from experience i would say that lack of actual Quality Services is an evidence based issue that needs to be be countered because if you do what i think what does that mean. If you do too much awareness that this is where this program youre going to increase the demands of Mental Health services now if you increase the demand with the positive capacity for mental status so be sure that your faculties to provide these services are going to cost and only 10. 00 a consequence which means that you know its going to go could have to begin to find a more crowded and its going to somehow like a legacy kind of effect because then this stigma is going to increase. So its not really just about improving the Awareness Program how how do i have to point out ok yes i think that the i agree what the possible but i also want to shed some light and its very easy for us to look at Mental Health. Issue or you know all of the Mental Health illness. But i think its also very important for us a little prevention because where a very large point. Its not enough for us to always look at Mental Health from the rest for forms of. Were not on the increase in a systemic way were talking about very very new Psychiatric Hospital but the truth is that not every situation that every nigerian dealing with if they have been in Mental Health should know something that was biased intervention we need primary health care we need rest we need to be able to get past and i would just once a bit of counsel what was said the guardian governments response that i dont particularly believe that governments are doing enough i believe that there has been some bright yes but i dont think its been enough i dont think in 2019 nigeria is to use in the lunacy at the i think 59 shows the readiness of the government i dont think issues that theyre serious i dont think it shows that they were protecting the rights of people who live with Mental Health conditions i believe the government can still go and get me in collaboration with Civil Society organizations that your rights when and money and and and and means and they shall conducts bill but awareness but sorry nationwide awareness but also ensure that how how can we collaborate the beautifullest be a Grassroots Level up are we going to pull a brick when you get community being for Mental Health centers sort of that well were raising awareness and people who dont see the sentence there are people that he begins to take in the table him can you respond to that just briefly. You know what she said its its true. That nigeria currently prints to lunacy at which we felt its very very a kick and today significant progress has been made the revision which is compatible with global realities of the time had been submitted to the National Assembly and correctly its been done the british upon its at the touch level of here and before you dissolution of the last session of the nationalists and how might that be a brown how might that help updating a 959 unison that even that the terminology is is Old Fashioned an updated single something for 21000 display for how to help the help is that it takes him to write to the human rights of the clients it takes into cognisance d. D. Negative terminologies and stigma that had been used and it gives the plant powers to determine the poll and i told him it to determine what has been done to elected literacy at that best most of the poets in the house of the on the budget strict i want to share one other aspect in which people think the government can be doing more on and this is via video comment from a registered nurse who interviewed nurses and medical professionals in nigeria has resurged heres what he told the strain i think were all of the most. Is illegal negative the issues around the development of Mental Health issues and in niger is the lack of Government Resources of Government Support for professionals working within the field imagine people telling you in the system when you oh i sometimes on the were like 2 on the wards of like 20 there to beijing and we have to manage them. So you heard him put the onus there on the government but theres someone online whos saying its not just the government this is femi who says on the day i diagnosis side there are very few groups interest hospitals that support mental how its a social aberration to even mention seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist public and private sector wouldnt consider investments in Mental Health because its seen as unprofitable so hes putting some of the onus there on the Public Sector doctor to be a. Yes thats such true i mean its been highly impossible when you have no clients im so back up to the farm argument i think we dont have to take one side and leave the other in terms of creating awareness for Mental Health issues and the provision of Mental Health facilities in the country i think we have a lot of work to do both ways and we dont have to forgo one for the other im certainly not and allowed to return back to the issue of this will just approach to Mental Health issues or knowledge or i think is a much more serious problem that which were talking about and you wouldnt really find it in the city of mosul or the rule areas where people with Mental Health challenges of denial of the basic human rights and treating the most abysmal ways when you have this religious challenged and you know big for the church or the mosque exploiting these really Vulnerable People and gaining from them i think the government needs to do a lot more to that regard as well we need to write more checks for this religious tolerance and who provide who claim to be providing services that they cant possibly provide and also i think training in religious leaders you know has its pros and cons we also do some training as well as the Community Level but it took central that we let them know that the 1st land respondents to provide really basic Mental Health 1st aid and if the problem is serious to pass on to the appropriate practitioners and some would say to not take musses and answer their hands now trying to speak for my kids under false sense of competence that they might be able to handle really serious Mental Health issues so i think about something that we get a consideration. That maybe i guess how that. How guys i was just going to play like its very its very interesting because like you said obviously its not you know 7 the Mental Health crisis in nigeria its not any one group of people responsible its not going to be so it was people start your consumption neither is it the source has to be the government but i think something that is really really important for us to take into consideration in addressing any kind of crisis it wouldnt be like what you just understand in that not we all know that about us its about including the who would have psycho social disability or mental conditions and with the presence of nick on all of sorts of reasons and theyre going to be able to meet your organs as well dr veiga i want to play this for your matty website let me just remind everybody that moneys the mentally ill when i jerry an initiative that he has has won awards for their work have a look here the nations doctors are working to convince the public that Mental Health problems can and should be treated according to help officials there are only 135 congress in nigeria while there are more than 20000000 people suffering from various types of Mental Illnesses that statistic a scary and i dont even mention that. I am just wondering we have 3 doctors on. As a headline in south africa toxic city is coming right up. At 1st glance they could be the remains of an ancient civilization. An eye catching natural phenomenon. These strange tales surround johannas back. The largest city in south africa. But their beauty is deceptive and toxic. In fact the genes a made up of mining weights. And leftovers of south africa has them is often the industry. And within the law some disturbing secrets. Are journalists must time to do has uncovered the shocking truth of exactly whats in the mind and just how deadly they may be. Sunrise america river basin. One of south africas largest freshwater reserves. Bridget corrigan is a botanist. And a specialist in the regions biodiversity. This is a very special catchment for a lot of reasons if its a unique part of earthy from not just the terrestrial but also the 1st one of our diversity is very special its got about 14 species of fish and a lot of really endemic species of invertebrates and quite insects that contribute to the health of the sort of this river system. There are about 200. 00 tree species in america. Thats 17 of them. And about 400. 00 in the bed spaces. It is a National Treasure and the north west doesnt have a lot of these River Systems a lot of the systems in this province are heavily degraded. The crown jewel of this not true treasure lies just a few paddle strokes upstream. A sanctuary hidden at the heart of the reserve. This is america i were at the source of america river. And the water bubbles up from big underground what to kevins at that point of the day the water is clear is anything very low conduct 70 which means theres no salt is not pollutants in this in the system its really very very pure. The water is Crystal Clear but it might not stay that way. Recently the Mining Industry has become interested in the areas subsoil which is full of Precious Minerals its regarded as a 10 mining payments for things like. Compass over gold in the region so does pose a risk yeah this place is different at risk and its you know we would like to see those places as an absolute no guy for mining if you pollute this this area this this underground aquifer. You cant just get that back its not going to come back. So could the marco river basin one day resemble the of a desolate landscapes left behind by the South African Mining Industry. Like these flat lands dyed red by chemicals. Or these mined tailings in the midst of south africas forestalling and. Some of them date back to 1886 when gold was 1st discovered and understood motown culture comes back. From that point on the Mining Industry began to deposit its to breed all around the city. More and more waste piles of head. Often only a few dozen metres from residents homes. Some of the may look as innocent to sandy use but they are mine tailings the slag heaps of years of extraction and digging for gold i dont go over there to scare. Away. The day it comes or is here a whole year its run as was the day i bought you know. Because i was out to disable the p. C. s which will. Be pretty awkward for a former suburb i dont even 1st question just. Sort of at the plutocrats want to drive his daughter from the cost of her seducer 100. 00 euro edition. So one. Does it mean for those living next to these dunes. Like yeah thats me. So does the wind come from the mines earnings it flows this rose this side or this side just like tiny dylan mimi is a mother of 5 she spent all her life in the shadow of one of the largest mining dumps in the country its residue is everywhere. So the neighborhood has become one huge psalm. 22 you quote from the. Sun times yes your eyes become ok this is not if you go to the to new day and this choice has some mix some chemical in it so im advising you to take not to go to mine because its very dangerous to be its unhealthy at the same time to go you must think it or. Leave it youre good busy at it a few months ago tiny dylan meanly wanted to find out how many people in her neighborhood of over a 1000 residents were unwell so she knocked on almost every dual this house that is keith coffee this house here the model the owner of this house is a chest full of this when you come here wolf in here each and every man no women or child around here is coughing has a pope him of coughing as appropriate his skin some of them up only to. The man who. Says. He them i want to test in your question i will run off with a. Question that needs. Over one and a half 1000000 South Africans live in townships like this. At the foot of mine tailings mountains. Thats the south of it gets into our food week this past week drink this that so that is why so many people here this is the silent killer 7 this dust doesnt just make people vomit or cough several children in the neighborhood suffer from severe Neurological Disorders. Or who i believe you know for years you know if you. Believe. That if. You. Is 6 years old. She suffers from a paralyzing brain disease or you doing well lately however her family saying the tondo was born perfectly healthy the problems arose soon after the roof of the house was under repair at the time and the dust from the mine peeps gotten this dust you pull your good and the people that before you sleep you must face. That and everyone kids oh yeah a few weeks later the 1st signs of illness appeared in the years since the tundra has been unable to. Communicate with her. When she she was to be changed. Yeah and then she she says it is ok they are all new issue as she has to go as it reaches she kisses him and she screams all. Day you know she has to go out say you want to. Poverty has always prevented the family from being able to prove a link between attenders illness and the mind dust but they are no doubt if there are other fields like under our own i was the same symptoms same Health Issues yet i do know and theres a pinch out there its going to grow the only problem is that they are ashamed of their kids all and here they dont want anybody knowing of our day kids and the situation theres 2 of them open houses in the in the same street youre going to have them there many of them you know personally personally strange is something that have made you only find them here this is actually centered it in my angel to them out today telling them to do today dont be so bad if you go of out of any distance from here believe you me you never find this key. To find out whether the just from the nearby mine tailings really is the cause of peace illnesses. Must climb snake parkhill. It has been abandoned ever since the mind with. Access is supposedly forbidden theres nobody guarding the site which extends over 4 square kilometers while our model for about 6 years being run from us was rich. But then dimia turned the dishes. Was soumitra. Spicy. Mustard takes 500 grams of the sun. The dust thats blowing over the image below. On the way down he finds a green lake at the foot of the slope. Its used mostly to area gate adjacent farmland to residents also give it to their livestock sometimes their children even bay the net of this will. Work or if i can put in will do. For the like to put. A pause on the screen you have put it. Frankly linda is professor of environmental studies at Northwestern University in south africa can see me. Linda is also an expert on mining aleutian together at the World Health Organization all right with his help has developed a scientific her took a test kit for different wood to pollutants yes so im at the bottom of the mine turnings theres some water all around i was wondering which parent those fish do you think i should analyze 1st in the water you see finding. The tracks translate to. Elevate. Your eye. As you thought it would be recently gone by. So. Somebody down but in point of missouri. You know. So theres a through it. And you can also take we just call it. And. All you people like. Us. So i think its likely. That your son committed. Just so you know it was all example of what that says on the ground 0 the maximum and were going to continue to pose for then. Its impossible to analyze everything there and then so must takes another sample to check for more pollutants later. But the tests have already thrown out some serious questions. After some convincing one of the countrys top 3 gold produces agrees to a meeting. The 1st of the. Gold fields 8750 kilograms of gold was mined at the site last year. The team cant go underground into the mine itself and the company will only allow them to film surface operations we get all from from the stuff. But at night you will see on the front end theres some. Business friendly we are doing a plus minus 5500. 00 tons. A day i mean we have reaching out on 300. 00 tons valid depends on a lot of viability and how many times of coal is there. So there or that you see on the still fall is signing at the boss minus 5 times but done thats always currently. Only 5 grams of gold for each ton of mind thats a remarkable ratio. And it means a huge amount of residue to be disposed of. The precious metal is separated from the rest of the and then heated in these killings. Probably to make those there we used to im i said no sorry not that youre pretty nice to actually make those you know prices they know the order mega nice instead they got. The concession that c. P. R. So you add all of these together with these with the ball. The last stage is the cost at 800. 00 degrees celsius for 40 minutes. The end result gold falls. At 84 percent purity each weighs in at just over 16 kilograms and is worth around 538000. 00. Goldfields makes 5 of these gold balls a week. Producing 16200 tons of residue you equivalent to the weight of 2 of frances eiffel towers. The company has wasted human lives here on this he said constantly 24 hours a day by these pipelines connected to the factory. Within a few years this hail will become another Steep Mountain of debris reaching up to 70 meters high. Andrew passons and Stephen Joseph are its grand architects. Whats in there. What is its. Well its its whats left over from there from the extraction process its the rock that. Held the gold. And whats left behind off the gold has been removed so its silica and other materials its the sand. And other metals but many silica is there and you have the missiles for example there. Would be trace amounts but but very small concentrations. And some of the gold ores there is your random sauce deep has very little uranium minutes or so. Theres very little uranium and in this in the stomach you. Can really. Not offhand i think the numbers around about 40 to 50 grams of time. 40. 00 to 50. 00 annually south African Mining companies extract 10 times more uranium than gold the uranium is then abandoned leaving behind radioactive mined tailings so the kind of control you do the samples you are talking about is on daily basis the gold from. But the radiation 5th of may be. Ok or. Over time the waste produced by south africas gold industry has formed increasingly large radioactive heaps dumped outside in the open at. According to official estimates the mine tailings surrounding johannesburg now contain an astounding 600000 tons of uranium the quantities are so high that in reality the mountains of waste should be classified by the state as Nuclear Installations they should be confined and secured and kept at least 500 meters away from any residential area but those rules are routinely ignored as here into the shaft a township with over 20000 residents. Of. Bruno sherry ron is an engineer in Nuclear Physics and an expert from korea ratched a Research Association on radioactivity one as i was government on the. Same thought they were. That commercial school shaken by what she was going to seduce that there will be a little bit. Also paul not just on the well you know office all the moves you want to take to sort of you know im a quidditch sort of group on television i mean to depict. I know my point of view to see not just their young monk come up it even to be able. To do is to that youre in you do risk or deep within your she thought of us here your mom and shes. Going to join in our corn meal i dont is wrong but you dont want your little to do when this point 3000000 because you owe and you cannot sell gounder ticket for 3 years in a cell with a contract on lets work on the us for. Just one. And only because you want to force the doctor to try to. Place you know. What. Do you get from us. Do you think it was only. 4. 100 wanted to close on a letter that the. Master has discovered that radioactivity levels here are close to those in the exclusion zone around the site of the 96 Nuclear Disaster he follows the grazing animals to eric from gomez nearby farm. Eric keeps around 40 goats and a few sheep none of which seem to live very long lead them up about if they last week last week by 01 months and months of all year oh yeah and do you do you have a lot of baby though most because of your and my writings themselves then said as for success this is the. Eric wants to show us the most common symptom amongst his flock. They want to. Know has gone. From a muslim but a muslim know what you must. And this is the fungible what is. It in. The mind so all you. Want to learn and it cost. And i met. So when you see these every day what do you think. Was the motion and. I would go and talk about to you but its just the bins. It seems as though erics goats have radiation sickness but evidence is needed. We are close to the mind savings farm that money will look really sick i mean according to you do you own or do you think we should just have some bowl of the animals. Just like you. Have to take 5 samples from 2 goats intended to be used for Meat Consumption including one who is blind. I come up with the results of the china factor or the instructor thanks so you but i. Must turn takes the samples to be tested at south africas council the scientific and industrial research. Your views the waters under 30 days just across the trading. It is used as a recusal water jesus in relation also for almost a drink we also learn some more. Symbols train job was done with a saw it was come to me to look make good pets and so what can you what can you look forward almost all of their dead and the man goes by did and then called him and those like you you know now i am your lead you know what arsenic which are very toxic. Basically you. Need an expert to get them in order once we get them then that reason i can go right. As he waits for the analysis time returns to the investigation in part 2. Is the shocking results come in he shares the news with some of those affected and comes face to face with an Industry Insider what i found particularly scandals to take the worst possible material which is your radio grind into dust comparable to flour and make a hill out of it and put it into place where people live but hes a colossally bad idea. America is divided like never before inside is so convinced that theyre absolutely correct that the other side is dangerous people in power investigates how partisan politics are raiding the civil norms vital to american democracy every indicator shows america to be the least well functioning democracy of any. One of the strange death of american civility on aljazeera. In a world where journalism as an industry is changing we have fortunate to be able to continue to expand to continue to have that past and that drive and present the stories in a way that is important to our viewers. Everyone has a story worth hearing to. Cover those that are often ignored we dont weigh our coverage towards one particular region or continent thats why i joined aljazeera. Following 2 fatal crashes and the past year bowen decided to ground the brand new 7 through 7 max but this wasnt the 1st time that grounded a new craft back in 2013 the 787 dreamliner ran into trouble when a better record. But is out of the us Investigative Unit discovered there is more to the problem than just smoking batteries. Rewind broken dreams the boeing 787 on aljazeera. And i look like another with the top stories here on aljazeera doctors in sudans at least 5 people including 4 students have been shot dead by Security Forces during a demonstration sudans opposition has called for more protests over the killings in north korea and state where a night curfew has now been imposed they were rally against the findings of an investigation into last months deadly crackdown by the military join to it morgan has more on what this means for talks on sudans democratic transition. Well at the moment the Opposition Coalition nick is trying to talk to the minute with the military council they are in it was asians may already know that they signed and initial are sharing agreements earlier this month but theyre yet just time thats final which really contains all the details of how this Transitional Government should look like and what role each and every various institutions will meet now opposition is saying that the talks will resume and theyre expected to meet against laura but the people on the ground the protesters who have been largely eating these protests are saying that they dont want talks they want justice and accountability for the killings that have been happening since the protests started chinas top leadership has spoken out against the protests in hong kong for the 1st time blaming western forces for the unrest on sunday police repeatedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets to drive back prodemocracy protesters a spokesman for Chinas State Council said that beijing stands by hong kong as leader carrier testers have been demanding that she step down ever since she introduced an extradition built that has now be shelved at least 10 civilians have been killed after asteroids hit a busy marketplace in yemens northern solder province 27. 00 others were injured in the attack and cut to be a district which is a stronghold of the countrys who 3 rebels a hospital spokesperson says at least 2 children are among the dead but the run media has blamed the saudi amorality coalition for launching airstrikes but the Coalition Says the who were behind the attack at least 52 inmates have died in a prison riot in brazil prison Officials Say it happened in the northern paris states and involved rival criminal gangs and it took at least 2 guards hostage and the gang for one another 16 inmates were beheaded in these that are you up to date with the headlines here not as or stay with Us South Africa toxic city continues. Hundreds of strange mounds lie scattered around Johannesburg South africas most populous city but they arent a natural phenomenon they are mine tailings waste heaps left over from south africas hugely profitable gold industry. Many are also said to be dangerously toxic awash with heavy metals and poisons and radioactive debris. With expert help french journalists must time to do is getting that content scientifically analyzed. But one night while he waits for the results he gets a mysterious Voicemail Message a lot lot of your. Money where your around. In a month well i worked at an environmental geologist period for a while and i would very much appreciate you you know youre going to have a word about it thank you very much. The message is from a geologist eagle club chick after a 20 year career in the Mining Industry has now left it disgusted by the industrys failure to have his warnings about dealing with its waste ill tell you what i found particularly scandals to take the worst possible material which is you radium grind it into dust comparable to flour and make a hill out of it and put it into place where people live that is a cause colossally bad idea when you when you said what was the only way you doing reports where you listened at that time i i have written lots of reports i must have some sort of a record in emails probably over the over 100 so after a while you know i was explained look what you are proposing costs money i mean 1st of all you have to because the contaminate. The land that is number one number 2 you can actually pump tailings all the way back where you got them from grapes the wood up just a few percent of cement and you can get rid of tailings this way is it basically put it to normal you put it back to where it was how does it make you feel when you see it is local communities complaining about that or their Health Problem doesnt make you fear makes you feel like a murderer. What we have done like us said we have created an enormous and were all mental disaster if we were you know growing potatoes and we made and won a mental disaster along the side it would be different we would say ok we are feeding the nation why did gold Mining Industry do it in reached a small percentage of people so we have produced gold which is the most useless thing you know whole world it feeds human greed it has no uses and yet we have made him probably one of the biggest and one mental disasters in the world. So yes i do i do feel like like a murderer as eagles disturbing would sing head master heads back to sea from everett from goma. His current century possible signs of radioactive poisoning now the test results for the animals are being delivered m. Plus and by frank bender. The janice but professor of studies also one of them of what were joined by name is frank franklin. The professor has come to see erics livestock for himself. You see here. Is. The test results a clean material from the nearby mine tailings has contaminated eriks foam and uranium isnt the only problem. For example manganese would be quite significantly elevated in your and youll want to sample over 2 cells times what would what one would find in natural water sources we do have we do have an ego being elevated to solace in times of authentic this elevated 50. 1500. 00 ok the most lets say indicative mental binding impact of that is you are a new in those tailings that is about 10 times what you would see in the Natural Environment 10 times as much so what you what you analyzed in your water you did the bud 100 times more than one would find it on polluted Pristine Waters off of. The farm surrounded by pollution. Its animals badly contaminated and. Its disturbing news. The health of your goat shows the highest level before. You see uranium is 60 times for elevated but all the lead is that elevated to 80 times meaning almost 100 times above whats normal thats the same was cobalt thats the same was also in a 600 times for a nickel but maybe you didnt know if youre just going to say ok all right i can have all of the yes you can have. When theyre living in doubt for you fly me. A farm when livestock die prematurely townships which children have Neurological Disorders and suffer from terrible coughing fits. But all the medical links between poor health and mining conditions so clear cut. Stoff at this radio call Health Clinic might have some odd sense. Among their patients is. Its the 3rd time this month that my youngest son has taken an l. Ok. I dont know i think this is. Neat i let him use. Too much of this stuff was it isnt doesnt like it not to be good just that less is wonderful. Because of them dont know. So how hes going to yours. Their baby has called brocade shes. I was just into school and both science sometimes receive worst so you get a child with a cough like the one that i just saw. She was having a test in drawings of course it does because of the dust this is something that you will see on daily average yes your behavior here but number of clues is not to really there should be a study like youre mentioning is that everybody who are living lives to their minds if we get a lot of those patients i think definitely we have to do realize that. Astonishingly the South African state has never conducted a study to understand the impact of mine tailings on the population. But can. He catches up with the work and back in the township at the foot of the mine down and out collecting the trash. Ok lets go oh its. Very heavy so you have to do this every day. This is your house ok tunisias the small shack with her 4 children. Is again as a single i live by is a. Claim and im up on the corner when i land is it a corner quinola feel good telepictures and there were this tiny cabin provide some shelter from the rain but not from the pollution. And her children live only a few doesnt need to is from the mind where earlier i had measured radioactivity levels 28 times higher than the norm. She agrees to provide has samples to test what level. Contamination by the student of ok. Oh long songs pinay director of the institute for research and scientific expertise and comes online. To mean you know. Will come on tell you come on then hes commotions to pull. It in yeah if you blow it was he killed you gale norton i just you know me. So me i dont. Know she. Is one of the sort. Of want to put anybody. See what im into there yes you could fall and then there is this food kind of move. You put in culture get your lucky breaks yourself. Nester sure. Hope its love that they dont pay you well thats. Right if you turn. It all right that should be more than enough. And then. Just the more i mean you would put it. We have to be more. Like this i want to. Go next. Or a perfect. Master has also taken to has songs from the time to. The little girl suffering from your own to suit a moving look. This is one of a lot of thinking so done little. To look beautiful. Ah. And then more 10 in total from other residents living near the mine tailings and sent them via express mail to professor pinay in france. Once again theyll be a few days of waiting for the results. In the meantime looking for gold. Some of south africas most profitable export is used in the Electronics Industry some of it is used for investment but most of it ends up as drury yet to the websites of the worlds major Luxury Brands a curiously silent about the sources of the gold. Given that both jennifer was going to pull those that off. Nor are any of them keen to respond to questions show then theres one who can call just what they yell matilda clearly because they dont know how good the flow of their lives can for the job business on this one im on this one as of almost local financiers but again in a Community Called book review dont you know for the mother was one time was a good move when the mongia federal police each of them to come from the city indeed not one jewelry brand agrees to provide details of whether gold comes from. New delhi then who can you compose one question the. Italian brand is the 3rd largest jeweler in the world and it certainly seems to be using a lot of gold. Its time to go shopping. Greece head coaches and. Johannesburg located in santa the city among some of the most expensive real estate on the african continent in a luxurious Shopping Mall made by the company displays one of its finest pieces a gold and diamond necklace costing almost 78700. 00. Here in an area of the gallery you knew whether gold comes from if you can talk about it its a gold the gold yeah the gold you use in your jewelry. You know i you know the idea that are ok dont you think it is kind of a surprising that you dont know where to go comes from the caribbean so here you believe me to tell you you know ok ive heard of the. Thats just are is a measure still by product of the 1st word where you know. Its her thank you very much no you wont come. Back in a world overshadowed by the waste dumps of south africas a vast gold Mining Industry. People are gathering in a church hall. Tiny the activist has come to see everything its an ally their drugs on people with here. So to have all the children whose has some peace must die has taken for testing. What has spread and even the National Media present. Everyone wants to know what the scientists have concluded. Or think you so much again for being here today i really appreciate the fact that youve come quite a long way to be here must all run through the results gleaned from soil and guts samples and then you cools off and sap the name and stress plant in charge of analyzing the levels of heavy metal spout in the human head thats been gathered looking for someone to live we dont know it and i was born with a huge tree of a go to be a sun unit the shoot. Was a very nice you dont owe anyone else really it is. That you will. Surely was a residual too girl always will be sure to tell you who would. Do it dont do. It. So someone just did go for so forward when you would expose your pose and go this was on when you were exposed to it with people who are sure that god loves you then dont go and no one is exempt as well while youre in the prison i dont. Know what your ex was rule yet it really all was a big yard you know these findings could help South African doctors give me a tandem better diagnosis for her disease. Doing very much once again. As residents begin planning their next move. Including a possible legal claim against the Mining Companies. Obtains an interview with the chamber of mines. The industrys association for some of south africas most powerful mining concerns. This is al jazeera. Out there on the clock this is the odds or news hour live from london coming up the alleged 911 mastermind offers to help victims of the attacks in the lawsuit against saudi arabia if he isnt executed. Sudans opposition calls for war protests off the Security Forces kill for. School children around. Iraq between 2 gangs leaves at least 52 people dead at a prison in brazil. And russian Opposition Leader. Has returned to prison after being treated for what his lawyer says was a poison me. With all your sports including. Level completed a 16 year old has become 3000000. 00 richer for playing a computer game. So that the man accused of masterminding the september the 11th attacks on america says he may be willing to help the victims and their lawsuit against saudi arabia in return Khalid Shaikh mohammed wants the u. S. Government to forego seeking the Death Penalty against him the saudi government has been accused of helping to coordinate the 2001 Suicide Attacks that claim nearly 3000. 00 lives its actions hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Center and the pentagon. Denies any involvement lets go straight to particle hang across one whos standing by for us in washington d. C. And patty tell us more. Well this is a its a little bit more subtly written by the lawyers in this case as you mentioned the families the survivors the victims are suing saudi arabia and as part of that lawsuit they do a discovery process and one of the one of the people they want to talk to is collegiate but Shaikh Muhammad and his lawyer responded and heres the filing right here is just filed in the Southern District of new york and it says today the counsel for muhammad informed the pcs that mr muhammad will not consent to a deposition at the present time so hes hinting that he could counsel stated the absence of a potential death sentence much broader cooperation would be possible so send in a message to the federal prosecutors if you want to know what he knows than take the Death Penalty off the table that is something that the last prosecutor Guantanamo Bay had floated the idea of doing basically giving everyone involved 911 life sentences in exchange for taking the Death Penalty off the table he has since been dismissed so hes definitely trying to send a message that he could be able to help in this lawsuit but 1st he wants to make sure that the he doesnt die by lethal injection or some other method what traction is likely to get what about the u. S. Administration will they make it. Well theres these are 2 very Different Things ecliptic muhammad is in Guantanamo Bay facing criminal charges for his role this is a civil lawsuit so the 2 dont necessarily overlap we havent heard what the president might want to do in this case he has shown that he has a willingness to interfere in judicial proceedings where his predecessors did not his testimony though would be controversial if he was say able to help with this lawsuit the lawyers for saudi arabia would probably be able to paint a pretty damning picture because of his treatment its widely believed and known that he was faced severe torture at the hands of the Central Intelligence agency in those secret prisons right after 911 so any of his testimony could be called into question this again is just now developing so we havent heard any official reaction from the administration but if we do well pass that along or about it even if the timing thanks very much they put it all in washington d. C. Well this all comes as the u. S. President signed a new law giving permanent benefits to 1st responders who became ill in the aftermath of the september 11th attacks the legislation guarantees federal funding through 228924 more than 18000 people who will qualify for the benefits 1st responders who rushed to the science of the twin towers in new york and others who worked for months cleaning up were exposed to toxic chemicals causing serious illness and hundreds of deaths speaking before signing the bill drum said hed be in there alongside 1st responders in the aftermath of the attacks drawing ridicule on social media many of those affected were Firefighters Police officers and other 1st responders and i was down there also but im not considering was no 1st responder but i was down there spent a lot of time down there with you. Now darts is in sudan say at least 5 people including 4 students have been shot dead by Security Forces during a demonstration sudans opposition has called for more protests over the killings in north korea and state they were rallying against the findings of an investigation into last months crackdown by the military didnt have morgan has more now from neighboring ethiopia was was they came out of the classrooms in north kordofan state to complain about bread shortages and the rising cost of fuel and transport was. But minutes after the student protest started in the city of im hoping Security Forces opened fire i see. My brother died as a martyr and i will not cry over him because god willing hes in heaven slots for blood we want to accept anything else. The funerals have been held for some of the several People Killed some reportedly by sniper shots to the head the Central Committee for sudans doctors which is allied to the opposition says doesnt sustained critical injuries. Following months of political turmoil one protest started on saturday protestors infuriated by the announcement from the Committee Investigating the prodemocracy state in killings on 2 and a 3rd in her to the committee announced that the ruling military junta wasnt to blame and that 87 protesters died activists see the truth is more than 100. Hours after mondays killings in protesters in other cities came out to condemn the renewed violence many demanding that the Opposition Coalition known as the forces of freedom and change halt negotiations with the ruling military to form a Transitional Government. Both sides signed an initial power sharing agreement earlier this month but are yet to agree on a final deal and former government some activists are concerned that the talks and deals seem to be centered only in the capital is this something that only happens outside and areas that are not part of the center is it like people in the center can come out and protest and theyre ok but people in that if we cant so we need to know the answers to these questions. As talks between the Opposition Coalition and the military gen to continue to do the demand for civilian government as well as calls for justice and accountability not just for the lives lost in fulfilling june but for the sudanese killed in protests in many other states nationwide since the. People Morgan Al Jazeera i just if you appeal to brazil now where at least 52 inmates have died in a prison riot prison Officials Say it happened in part a state in the north and involved rival criminal gangs they took at least 2 guards hostage as the gangs for one another 16 inmates were beheaded lets get more from al jazeera. Is it extraordinary deadly battle is it tell us more. Well another dramatic prison riots in brazil this time it happened in the city of media in the Northern State off by that thats when around 7 oclock in the morning a group of gang members tried to take a sec tour of it within that prison of another group and thats what started the fierce fighting apparently they set up several fires in order to prevent Prison Guards from reaching the area where the my age of fighting was taking place 16 people were beheaded and the rest died 52 people in total but the rest died because of social cations because of the fire that was created there right now there is no real information of what started there is an Investigation Underway or 3 days are saying that they had no Real Intelligence information that Something Like this was going to happen but brazils minister of justice said is your mortal the leverage that the or car wash operation judge thats currently the minister of justice in brazil has called for an emergency meeting he also said that they were putting more intelligence within the ground and also increasing the presence of Security Forces in the area. Of the brazil is a huge prison population was move against the 3rd largest in the world something about violence certainly not uncommon. Well thats her thats not the 1st time Something Like this happens in brazil earlier this year in made another massive prison right here in the state of so and as thats right next to find out where this one happened and this one happened in several prisons there were around 55 people lost their lives again brutal violence and what most analysts are saying is that the main reason is that brazil has one of the highest homicide rates in the world again also the worlds 3rd largest prison population that is filled with overcrowding inhumane. The situation inside is a new main and again brutal repression and riots happening there and why is this. Gangs are in most cases most of that what were seeing is that one gang is fighting another and brutal violence is used to send a message the more violent this riots are they send a very strong message to the rival gangs and what most analysts are saying is that hes tried to resolve the problem creasing Security Intelligence among other things but theyre not solving the real problems that are affecting brazils prison which is basically overcrowding and a shortage of staff so those are the major major issues that have not been resolved yet or a target thanks very much stories about reporting there. Coming up on this news from london saving lives in a war zone the hospital is under attack in syria last rebel stronghold plus. Its a less than welcome for. The 1st minister and made warnings he could be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. And getting the band back together straight is ball tampering players are preparing to take on england in the ashes thats come out with paid. At least 10 civilians have been killed after strikes hit a busy marketplace in yemens northern sort of province 27 others were injured in the attack and cuts a bit district a stronghold of the countrys 50 rebels a hospital spokesperson says at least 2 children are among the dead who the run media has blamed the saudi Iraqi Coalition for launching the strikes the Coalition Says were behind the attack and at least 14 civilians have been killed as government warplanes pound rebel positions in hama. The airstrikes have left few hospitals to treat the injured and a hunter has more now from an talk in turkeys border with syria. The intensive care unit is full of the war wounded this 3 month old russian backed Syrian Government offensive in northwest syria has left at least 2000 men women and children with injuries many of them severe and there arent many hospitals still operating in the rebel held province of idlib thats because Health Facilities have been destroyed in airstrikes that International Aid agencies say seem to be targeted attacks in breach of International Humanitarian law. Theyre leading clear think of the number of this is really an injury is coming to us and we cannot cool wizzy this number of basins because this number is there being pleasing and the kinds of injuries is different. And some like one year old but there we are now maimed for life civilians medical workers and Health Centers have all been targeted in the offensive the strategy appears to put pressure on the opposition support base in an attempt to force the rebels to surrender. After almost 8 weeks of military operations the Syrian Regime has been able to retrieve parts a huge chunks of the Demilitarized Zone and if not they have proven to be quite inefficient and Holding Ground so after 8 weeks theyve been only able to get around 1. 5 percent of the demon try still on the other hand oppositions been able to get 30 script along with areas that were under regime control. Its not clear if behind the scenes negotiations between the backers of the warring sides russia and turkey are responsible for the changes on the ground but for the 1st time in weeks Syrian Government troops advanced into rebel held territory in northern hama they reversed the oppositions gains and this time without facing much resistance. Is military support to the rebels is believed to be behind the repeated failures by the pro. Damascus alliance to take ground this gave turkish officials leverage over russia which recently used its own card by intensifying bombardment of civilian areas the question is whether a compromise has now been reached ahead of a new round of syria peace talks between russia turkey and iran later this week and the capital. The opposition says the ceasefire needs to be revived in before there can be any progress on the political front that troops cant come soon enough for the syrians in the rebel held province who have already lost so much senator there on talking russian Opposition Leader like he never only has been transferred back to prison after receiving treatment for what his lawyer says was a suspected poisoning their own he was rushed to hospital on sunday after suffering from facial swelling and rushes Authorities Say he had an allergic reaction while in the Detention Center where hes serving a 30 day sentence for organizing an authorized protest melanies personal doctor says shes taken samples of his clothing for chemical testing. I urge my colleagues that he should be left under medical supervision for at least 3 more days when the key tests and research is ready however sadly by order from above he was just discord by police to the detention room you know in the field that almost. Everything has been done to remove a demon so the nothing is seen he has been injected prednisolone in huge amounts of course to a demon is practically gone but what is next or how does the body react is unknown this is a poisoning by some unknown chemical substance what it is where it was nobody can tell now has not been the term and for now. Well from polonium to poison umbrellas theres a long history of dissidents being targeted with toxic substances although the kremlin has consistently denied involvement here in the United Kingdom former russian Double Agents screwball and his daughter were found unconscious on a park bench in march 2018 the British Government says the kremlin ordered them to be poisoned with the nerve agent novacek another former spy thats Alexander Litvinenko died in london in 2006 that after drinking tea laced with polonium 210. 00 which is a rare radioactive isotope a british inquiry said that russian president Vladimir Putin probably approved the killing then theres vladimir. Russian opposition activists he says he believes attempts were made to poison him in 20152078 German Laboratory found he had elevated levels of heavy metals like mercury in zinc and ukrainian president ial candidate Viktor Yuschenko when he suddenly disappeared from the campaign trail in 2004 he reappeared later but with a disfigured face and doctors say he was poisoned with dioxin russian and Ukrainian Security services were suspected there and further back in 1988 during the cold war in fact bud carry an anti communist dissident georgy markov he was killed when someone used an umbrella to fire a rice unlaced pellet into his leg on londons Waterloo Bridge the soviet k. G. B. Was blamed for the attack so lets take this on we can speak now to peter reza love whos a criminal critic and member of the protest group was he right he suffered his own suspected poisoning last year was flown to berlin for emergency medical treatment and joins us via skype from in estonia and peter welcome to the Program Point to get your perspective in this novell make a sim and to do so just give us a little bit more context about what happened to you. Well basically what happened to me is about a month after we did a very. Loud action in russia defining of the world in the final of the few for world cup in moscow i was poisoned by unknown substance while i was in order in moscow and basically after that it spent about a month in recovery from a very heavy situation i was unconscious for about a week and be sickly not in a good mental state for about 2 or 3 weeks in the german hospital where i was flown after moscow right so given your experience whats your assessment of whats happened with the election of on the well we know today that he has already been cleared to go back from the hospital to the prison by the hospital thirtys that. Examine him so it is evident that his condition isnt obviously as bad as mine which was like a knee death state. It was most likely what happened what happened to him yesterday was a poisoning because he has no history of allergies and his doctor and where is think that all the sounds indicate that it was a poisoning but the substance was used which one was quite quite late so he had no intention of causing issues demonstrating it was kind of just to basically play on his nerves and show as a criminal acts demonstrate that he can do virtually anything in any circumstance and you think thats what its all about its presumably warning people like people like yourself to be quiet. Well its a warning because like you know things like that dont go does it will work on us im still i was back in russia essentially almost 3 months after my poisoning bad doing exactly the same think its kind of a sign that the kremlin likes to sense that they can do. Anything and no matter how loud the public have praised they will still be doing it and its going to we of them to show their. Power and with the can but at the same time it shouldnt be the intellectual capabilities of Russian Special Agency Agencies should not be overestimated they have done some very weird and funny. As you can see operational choices and this causes civil said in russia to wonder whether anyone in Russian Special services has any sound reasoning at all does it concern you thats another attempt might be made on you and is that something that alexina valmy should be concerned about if it is proven in fact that he was poisoned well you know you know actually once if you do. Opposition politics in russia if you are active in that field anything you have to do in any moment from like poisoning to an attack on the street to any other violent acts so essentially if you get into this. Kind of area of activity in russia should lead to a parrot for everything but i think its you know as you. If you think that youre fighting for the right cards you should not be scared of things like that thats just the way things are run in russia right. Its just great in fascinating to get your perspective on this do appreciate it thank you very much for the time to very much. Britains new Prime Minister is refusing to meet leaders until they agree to reopen the brics Withdrawal Agreements or johnson has been holding talks in scotland with the 1st minister Nicola Sturgeon and shes accused johnson of pursuing a no deal bricks which she says will be deeply damaging for the whole of the United Kingdom but in baba reports now from adam. Using a smattering of applause for the u. K. Prime minister as he arrived for talk to scotlands 1st minister yes they shook hands but they were never going to see eye to eye even before he arrived Nicola Sturgeon warned Boris Johnson he could be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom if he delivered no deal breaks it its fair to say these 2 politicians have a very different vision of the future. U. And i think that would be catastrophic for scotland and indeed for the whole of the you keith. At a naval base near Glasgow Johnson outlined plans for new investments in parts of scotland wales and Northern Ireland worth almost 400000000. 00 but his governments also spending more than 100000000. 00 on an Advertising Campaign informing the public about a no deal breaks it and he says he will meet e. U. Leaders if they dont agree to revisit the Withdrawal Agreement and scrap the socalled backstop designed to prevent a hard border in Northern Ireland what we want to do is to make it absolutely clear that the backstop is no good it did its got to get there with broad agreement is dead its got to go but there is scope to do a new deal before meeting the 1st minister Boris Johnson headed to the Scottish Parliament for another tense meeting with the leader of the Scottish Branch of the conservative Party Ruth Davidson she says she supports the Prime Minister but has firmly rejected the idea of a no deal breaks it arguing nobody advocated it in the 2060 Referendum Campaign her allies are warning the johnson governments approach could boost support for independence which is already on the rise as a party for independence and gotten almost 50 percent if not a majority but it is a serious conflict between the 2 governments then that could provoke another independence referendum maybe not immediately but after the next scottish elections the Scottish Government a far from the only people warning johnson hes in danger in the union whether they try to hold another independence vote in the near future could depend on whether politicians in westminster are able to stop him the dean barber al jazeera edinburgh. Scotlands 1st minister isnt the only person mourning the burros johnsons strategy could lead to the u. K. Breaking apart the divisions were already stark in the 2016 referendum the u. K. As a whole voted to leave the European Union by 52 to 48 percent thats reflected in england and wales where a similar proportion of people voted along the same lines but scotland which rejected independents in 2015 voted to stay in the e. U. By. 62 percent the Scottish National party now wants another independence referendum and if the u. K. Crashes out of the e. U. Without a deal its a similar picture in Northern Ireland where nearly 56 percent voted to remain the arch Prime Minister as well in the no deal breaks it will raise the question of reunifying the province with the republic of ireland and spain to Michael Kenny whos director of the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at the university of cambridge joins us live via skype from housing failed professor kenneth tell us what your view is here is it overstating the case that Boris Johnson might be the last Prime Minister to oversee the United Kingdom. We cant be certain of that yet and certainly we are in a proposition in terms of you know and have been ever since the result of the brits a referendum and you just talked through the results sort of cause this is sort of deepening tension between some of the different parts. But now with johnson as Prime Minister we have a new factor in the mix and particularly does pursued a strategy of making serious option and perhaps even very remember option now tension thats right its very difficult questions about what would be seen how to be perceived out so i mean. Those are also carried. Out in normal and devoted to him in 2016 so he may not be the last Prime Minister but he could be the catalyst for france dissolution. Well i mean you know what im saying is that there have been tensions in the building you know for to some while. Before the Scottish Independence referendum but certainly since things weve been on heightened alert theres been a current conflict with the government and that is led by the s. N. P. Which is a call to commit to independence but the question of the future of u. K. Has been on the agenda since come along were made that even more complicated because there is so interplay between the 2 so. Certainly we need in terms of politics at westminster im ok. Towards managing you making sure those tensions dont get out of how the question is is Boris Johnson the current Prime Minister go platinum can he manage but its very difficult if he is he is a union man as it were i mean hes a supporter of the union of the United Kingdom and he knows the dangers of what hes doing one presumes so do you think hes got Something Else up his sleeve he might be he might surprise us in going to Different Directions well thats whats possible with boris i mean i would say that this way that hes walking a line here on the one hand he does not. Know where the sensibility sensitivities in scotland. To bracks it is let alone no deal greggs very very hard but on the other hand there are many voters. Who are really getting quite impatient with the fact that bracks it has not been delivered and he sees the threat there of the bricks and parts you can just come through and youre going to elections and certainly look you know the politicians in westminster want to live on what you want so hes got to walk a line between the 2 very difficult and maybe irreconcilable forces professor Michael Kelly great a perspective appreciate that thanks a lot thank you. Well plenty still ahead here in the news are. Trying to defend hong kongs police and blames western forces after 2 days of violent clashes in the city. The search for enlightenment in indian administered kashmir and the holy environmental mess is leaving behind. A football superstar cristiana rinaldo who receives another award too as was impressive list around the late peter storrie. And there are. Some portions of europe im afraid to say that we could well see a few more yet you can see all this chatter that is containing some scattered showers and thunderstorms you could see some strong winds in there also have a system a working its way into the southwest of the u. K. And that could also bring with it not only some rain but also some but. At times that this is the picture day at time it is not too bad 26 in paris 29 in syria he can see weather right in the cloud will base should be. Maybe just increase in the cab as the day goes on but really the bulk of the rains are going to be central and eastern sections i know is the temperature in moscow not this temperature is actually set to decline even further over the next few days 16 degrees on choose that with some cat the child and sunny day on wednesday and 15 degrees is about the best youll see thats about 8 degrees below the average for this time of year. Much of Central Europe still under quite a bit of cloud there is a chance i want to show again we could see a thunderstorm and then add to cross the northwest again as have all the cloudy unsettled the across much of the u. K. So 21. 00 in london with a chance also in the Northern Africa is fine it is drying time which is not too bad if the average this time of year 34 into this. And war on terror begins without god but it does not in there no terrorist state poses a greater or more immediate threat than the regime of Saddam Hussein and this is a regime that has something to hide they had prepared a significant propaganda off and guess what not one w m d shite was found in iraq since the 1991 iraq deception on aljazeera. Theres no one we have to. Keep us right and to be i suspect its great to know the person from the time. On counting the cost this week south africas deaf laden Companies Need a bailout before they cripple the economy well take a look at taylor swift spats with big business over cool and music plus we find out why a radiant could some looking for work in both a new book. Currency of the cost on aljazeera. And again a reminder the top stories here on aljazeera and the man accused of masterminding the september 11th attacks says he may be willing to help the victims in their lawsuit against saudi arabia in return Khalid Shaikh mohammed wants the u. S. Government not to seek the Death Penalty against him. Sudans opposition has called for more protests over the killing of students in 13. 00 is to north korea found state say at least 5 people including 4 schoolchildren were shot dead by Security Forces during a demonstration. After i wakes of mass rallies and violent confrontations between police and protesters is beijings chief policy office managing kongs officials had this response. We call on all the people in hong kong regardless of their social backgrounds to unequivocally oppose and boycott violence the recent developments especially the acts of violence by a small number of radical elements have seriously undermined the broad interests of hong kong for prosperity and stability. This is the 1st time Chinas State Council has responded to the demonstrations prompted originally by a proposed new extradition laws the office backs home comes government wants protests to stop and those behind the violence to be punished they pose a serious challenge to the rule of law and public order in hong kong and to life and property of hong kong residents theyve also crossed the red line of the principle of one country 2 systems and by no means should be tolerated. The extradition law would have allowed people from hong kong to be sent to the mainland to stand trial that bill has been suspended but the anger has deepened and widened into a Broader Movement with calls for greater democracy in hong kong and chief executive kerry lamb to resign the state council have the rights to other points and this me is the chief executive and the states callisto had just a few to do so that means that of course were very disappointed and also it means that the say council refit was trying knowledge what is happening in whole hall and what has no good course of all to come the whole extradition bill campaign and what help people leave hong kong was a city under siege over the weekend there were dozens of arrests and many injured as police and protesters clashed after intense standoff with Chinas Liaison Office. C. Tell us more about this. Well this comes in a court filing from the attorneys who are pursuing this claim remember it is taken years for the victims and the survivors to come to this position the law had to be changed in congress allowing them to sue saudi arabia the president at the time president barack obama vetoed that bill it only to have it be overridden so now the lawyers are gathering evidence and they wanted to talk to a bunch of different people who are in prison and related to the 911 attacks and cleek Shaikh Mohammad responded through his attorneys to these representatives who are want to sue saudi arabia basically saying in the letters right here it was filed in the Southern District of new york because a federal court in the absence of a potential death sentence much broader cooperation would be possible saying that hes choosing not to be just deposed at the present time so trying to send a message to the criminal trial that hes willing to make a deal that could potentially help these thousands of people who want to sue saudi arabia the way the system is though its different this whats happening Guantanamo Bay is a criminal procedure this is a civil procedure so its not clear if his request is going to have any impact since its not being made to the people who are responsible for his criminal trial or about it just another day for me if you would on a related issue the u. S. Senate currently voting on president trans vetoes of resolutions blocking sales to saudi arabia whats happening there. Well i have it right here before me and theyre still voting they tend to take a little while and these things but the vote has been rolling up as more senators come in so let me give you just a little bit of background while we wait to see if it in fact passes what this is is the president dumbing trump wanted to send to sell about 8000000000. 00 of arms to saudi arabia and what he wanted to do is allow them through the Raytheon Company to build some of these very classified systems in saudi arabia after the killing of journalists or democracy shoji said it stepped in and said no you dont get to buy these weapons what the president then did is he declared a National Emergency in effect going around congress so he wouldnt have to seek their approval hes saying that iran is such a threat that saudi needs these weapons so we saw the senate and the house vote to stop that to say the president you cant do that you cant override congress because it is a pretty unusual move actually the president issued his 3rd veto of his presidency so this vote happening on the senate is to see if they can get the 2 thirds majority they would need to override a veto in the senate then it would move on to the house the original vote was 534045 against that is far short of what they would need to override a veto ive been listening to the roll call so far it doesnt sound like theres a whole bunch of defectors remember the president s own Party Controls the senate but thats what were watching right now just to see exactly what happens if they are able to override the president s veto it seems unlikely they were able to with the last time where they tried to do sanction saudia in yemen but as of right now theyre voting and will of course keep track of it let you know how it comes out but it greatly but with you soon as we get more news on things we want to put it go here to washington. Well all of this comes as the u. S. President signed the new law giving benefits to 1st responders who became ill in the aftermath of the september the 11th attacks legislation guarantees federal funding through 2902 for more than 18000 people who will qualify for benefits 1st responders who rushed to the site of the twin towers in new york and others who worked for months cleaning up were exposed to toxic chemicals causing serious illness and hundreds of deaths and speaking before signing the bill trump said hed been there alongside 1st responders in the aftermath of the attack yes it was true some ridicule on social media many of those affected were Firefighters Police officers and other 1st responders and i was down there also but im not considering myself a 1st responder but i was down there spent a lot of time down there with you. Turns of what more can you tell us about this ride. Well there is another dramatic. Prison embrace that happened in the city of media in the state of northern brazil and it started very early in the morning this monday at 7 oclock in the morning apparently one a group of gang members tried to take the other side off the prison and thats what started the whole fighting apparently they set up several fires along the way in order to prevent authorities from reaching the area where the major fighting was happening at the time we were able to see some video from there about small coming out 7 within the prison apparently many of those who died aside from those who were beheaded others died because of social cation most of the information thats coming out is from official saudis we havent heard yet from relatives or others who have been affected by this by this incident but its not clear yet what started it i mean in authorities are saying that theyre investigating the whole case some experts are saying that confrontations between 2 major rival gangs thats what started this incidence mostly because of control of Drug Trafficking in that area thats a very its very normal in those areas and brazil but theres an investigation ongoing and the minister of justice. Has said that he was taking immediate action called for an urgent meeting isolated most of the gang members involved and also increased security of the area where. This is not on code where the prison. Well its quite common and as i said before it mostly happens between rival gangs the latest one that happened is in may this year when 55 people were killed in several prisons in the state of amazon as this is right next to where is located where this latest incident took place and its what most analysts say is that whats happening in brazil is a country with very high homicide rates one of the highest in the world the worlds 3rd largest prison population with overcrowding Inhumane Treatment and brutal riots as we have seen and what its very very common is this brutal riots that are happening in the countries mostly because gangs want to send the message that the more violence they use is the easier to keep gang members in line in spite of this government have taken actions right after this riot happened but theres no immediate actions or policy order to improve the situations in the prisons like over crowding shortages of personnel or guards inside the prison among other things so this is one of the reasons why its very very common in this type of situations of brazils prisons for wishing to put up which was deserves. Its not clear if the hind the scenes negotiations between the backers of the warring sides russia and turkey are responsible for the changes on the ground but for the 1st time in weeks Syrian Government troops advanced into rebel held territory in northern hama they reversed the oppositions gains and this time without facing much resistance. Is military support to the rebels is believed to be behind the repeated failures by the prodemocracy alliance to take ground this gave turkish officials leverage over russia which recently used its own card by intensifying bombardment of civilian areas the question is whether a compromise has now been reached ahead of a new round of syria peace talks between russia turkey and iran later this week in the qatar capital nor silt on. After their meeting at her official residence she repeated her warning behind all the bluff and bluster this government and the path that it is pursuing i think is dangerous it became clear to me that this government the new Prime Minister has set the uki on an almost inevitable path to a new deal breaks at the position that it has taken that makes it very difficult to see how any deal can be stuck with the e. U. Leaders if they dont agree to revisit the Withdrawal Agreement and scrap the socalled backstop designed to prevent a hard boarder in Northern Ireland what we want to do is to make it absolutely clear that the backstop is no good it did its got to get there with broad agreement is dead its got to go but there is scope to do a new deal before meeting the 1st minister Boris Johnson headed to the Scottish Parliament for another tense meeting with the leader of the Scottish Branch of the conservative Party Ruth Davidson she says she supports the Prime Minister but has firmly rejected the idea of a no deal breaks it arguing nobody advocated it in the 2060 Referendum Campaign her allies are warning the johnson governments approach could boost support for independence which is already on the rise as a part for independence and. Gotten almost 50 percent if not a majority but theres a serious conflict between the 2 governments then that could provoke another independence referendum maybe not immediately but after the next scottish elections the Scottish Government a far from the only people warning johnson hes in danger in the union whether they try to hold another independence vote in the near future could depend on whether politicians in westminster are able to stop him the dean barber aljazeera edinburgh. So lets a recap of the top stories here on out of there and the man accused of masterminding the september the 11th attacks on america says he may be willing to help the victims in their lawsuit against saudi arabia in return Khalid Shaikh mohammed once the u. S. Government to forego seeking the Death Penalty against him the saudi government has been accused of helping to coordinate the 2001 Suicide Attacks it claimed nearly 3000 lives saudi arabia denies any involvement pedicle again has more. Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is in Guantanamo Bay facing criminal charges for his role this is a civil lawsuit so the 2 dont necessarily overlap we havent heard what the president might want to do in this case he has shown that he has a willingness to interfere in judicial proceedings where his predecessors did not his testimony though would be controversial if he was say able to help with this lawsuit the lawyers for saudi arabia would probably be able to paint a pretty damning picture because of his treatment its widely believed and known that he was faced severe torture at the hands of the Central Intelligence agency in those secret prisons right after 911. 00 so any of his testimony could be called into question though it is in sudan said at least 5 people including 4 students have been shot dead by Security Forces during a demonstration sudans opposition has called for more protests over the killings in the north called a fine state for a night curfew has been imposed rallying against the findings of an investigation into last months deadly crackdown by the military giunta chinas top leadership has spoken out against the protests in hong kong for the 1st time blaming western forces for the unrest on sunday police repeatedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets to drive back prodemocracy protesters the spokesman for Chinas State Council said the beijing stuns by hong kongs lead to carry protesters have been demanding that she step down ever since she introduced an extradition bill that has not been shelved at least 52. 00 inmates have died in a prison riot in brazil prison Officials Say it happened in the northern paris state and involved rival criminal gangs 16 inmates were beheaded alright you have to say the headlines here and i deserve the q. Revisited is coming right up by from. The wilderness of cambodia under threat. Of a profit by an illegal timber trade one of one east investigates the plunder of cambodias forests. 100. A. Player. Play. So theres a particular score that you have to get for you let loose on notations on holidays a 100 a check. How many of these patients received today everybody else and oh ive got to last a set. Of 285000000 people all blind or visually impaired worldwide and 90 percent of the us live in developing countries and yet with the right eye care and medical interventions 80 percent of Vision Impairments could be prevented if all kids. On drugs just lacey and im in zambia to meet the team of all this on the fly and on most of the oldest flying on hospital is an airplane has been converted into a fully functioning surgical and training hospital which travels to developing Countries Worldwide the oldest team has been working here in zambia one of the least developed countries in the world since 2010. 00000. 0000. 000 i get. The to my mother grandmother let me be their money back i think it costs a little less guts that. The plane has a fully equipped operating room alongside laser treatment and. Multimedia past and interactive training facilities. Richard has been brought in to have corrective surgery on a screen. This relatively simple operation will have a huge impact on richards ability to perform well at school and therefore his prospects for the rest of his life. It also gives a local doctor. The opportunity to work alongside his mentor Laurie Benjamin one of the u. K. s leading our surgeons so you see over there are microscope dr and bony doing the searches together with the dr benjamin its its amazingly well equipped to proper modern you know for long periods the really expected when you come into the plane incredible. I want to show you another interactive feature only on your crowd here is this monitor over here so you have 18 cameras on board you have the opportunity a podcast of everything thats happening in the Main Operating theatre to the front classroom and as i can hear is a sudden voice yes so that the surgeon doing the surgery as wearing a microphone here so doing surgery hes explaining the procedure step by step to the front from classroom and also gives the ability of the participants in the training doctors to ask questions and opens up a fair after another 48 people in the course exactly mazie. The option by me which is just have the operation how did it was. It went on we were trying to correct this when to reach here in terms of for your training had you done many artists with surgeries or you involved with all this actually most of the screens that we did during training was observatories is watching what somebody was doing i see ok i saw these and so and i was really come with all of this. To date the following our Hospital Team has Trained Medical staff and form surgeries in 78 different countries. One of the most important procedures that they teach is cataract surgery. Cataracts occur when areas of the lens become opaque due to a change in the structure of proteins with linux. Prevents the normal transition of light through the lens making vision blurred or misty over time and without treatment the cataracts make leading eventually to blind. This is one of the major problems that all these deals with and zambia essentially the problem is that you know the lens which sits just behind your people goes from being totally transparent to a bit cloudy and therefore impacting your vision is a nice way to demonstrate this so if at the moment of normal vision and then with the cataract. Vision degrades to about so you can imagine the impact with this surgery when it returns to know. That you have another unique tool of a Training Program called a tie simulator and im going to use it to get to the head i heart and i started out after all i just write to you what later does ok handwriting id love to go yeah heres my patient gets heres your luckily not real these are i seeing a major you know youre going to grab triangles and put it in the center you go too low you hit the lens and get the culture in your heart you know that means theyre going to ok ok. The countries that we visit on monday they dont have a chance to try this before i gave before going to a real i use like exotic dogs eyes and hair. Done you know not closing you know pull it out withdraw. Were going to see your score ok ok very nice 15 im how do you know are sends a 1000000. To school that you have to get at least on the rotation 0100 days to hundreds of ok before i leave i meet a group of women who have all had cataract surgery. Sure she was totally gone she can see everything she could get through this one man should enjoy the news in one way and then did she have surgery on the plane. Yes yesterday are you the lady who was dancing just now yes because because youre happy when you can you teach me to dance come on like i dont want to do that i was talking about myself right now. I. Mean. I think thats my. Life i. A key element of the old this program is to work with local medical start using local facilities this ensures that even when the plane is gone the much needed specialist i treatment can still be provided in zambia this training is done it could to a Central Hospital where dr m. Boney works our children and i problems Vision Impairment is not a big problem in zambia we have about 50000 children we did you get into the country since obvious came to keep it they provide what we needed to this if they want to be the good people i simply dont think. This is the only guy hospital children that are still in zambia yeah this is the last one that we have. 3 young sisters have travelled over 16 hours by box with their mother to receive treatment from the old his team. All 3 suffer from varying degrees of cataract blindness which has caused them to fall behind at school as i can see. 2 of the sisters are now recovering from the surgery. So were just in the main hospital now just to go out and one of the wards to meet lucy whos the 3rd child of the family who is having cataract operation this afternoon so from this way. Motion me motion me lucy helen what lucy whats your favorite subject in school what you like to learn about this one issue is just really interesting. So. How is your english lizzie one. That. Says you. Have a fantastic. So the issue lucy has that she has cataracts in both eyes and appears as though she has normal visual ability but in fact its significantly impaired so much so that its had a real impact on being able to go to school and her lifestyle at home so with the intervention this afternoon with the right medical treatment which may be able to make a real positive impact on that. I dont see. They dont want to have this surgery is another opportunity for doctors benjamin and bony to Work Together you are. Here. So theyre all set to go and theatre is now sort of sleep under general anaesthetic the surgeons are scrubbed and set to go so its can see how they came up. During the operation the cataract is removed through a tiny incision in the on and a synthetic lens is inserted and ill just use the pick up place 15 degree of the record 2. 75. You see on the screen that. You see that a lens has returned the transparency to the people. And therefore should provide a good outcome for lucy. No new. York a few. Feet. You see that feel that fit thats. Yeah i. Know. You have a good ear overall by the situation but well see what the assistant show is now trying to figure out for. Certain burning what are you looking for with this examination. Just to see if thats the cornea. The eye not collapsing from the point it was you and you and certain that the new lungs. Because. They have to. You know. So if phonics line goes cut the moron. And it is going to the smaller sized objects not. The improvement from presurgery test is dramatic it really is amazing. She was able to see just the said figures thats all she could recognise it before the operation ok and now she improved to be able to see this something credible we know we know this by. Im doing my best i think shes done enough you know its just my friends shes not just saying. Im. So ive come to the end of my time in zambia and whats been wonderful to witness is this very special relationship between all of us and its local partners and the success of this project has been plain to see in the stories of lucy and her sister and the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide have had their site saved and their lives change they see. Hello and welcome im to go paul and youre watching the news hour live from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes. Be alerted 911. 00 attacks mastermind offers to cooperate in a lawsuit against saudi arabia if the u. S. Drops seeking the Death Penalty against a. More protests in sudan not just Security Forces opened fire at a demonstration in north cardiff killing 5 people. At least 57 inmates are killed in a prison right between rival gangs in northern brazil many of them decapitated or suffocated to death. Were going to come our deal. The u. K. Prime minister warns the e. U. Leaders to change their brags that position or he wont even sit down for talks with them. So the alleged mastermind of the september 11th attacks says he may be willing to help the victims in their lawsuit against saudi arabia and return to Khalid Shaikh mohammad wants the u. S. Government not to seek the Death Penalty against him the saudi government has been accused of supporting those behind the 2001 attacks which killed nearly 3000 people the attackers hijacked 4 planes and flew them into the World Trade Center the pentagon and a pennsylvania field saudi arabia denies any involvement or we can now get more on this from patty call hane joins us live from washington d. C. Patty what more can you tell us about this case. Well this is all part of the court filing the suit from 911 survivors and victims its taken them years to get to this point. It took Congress Passing a law that strips saudi arabia of its immunity to time president obama tried to veto it it was overridden so now theyre in the middle of this court case and part of that is theyre asking to depose some of the people that are in prison or in Guantanamo Bay in connection with 911 so the lawyers asked the representatives of hammad if you would if he would sit down and give them testimony said he wasnt ready to do that at this time this is the main reason is because the government is seeking the Death Penalty. For him and the exact line is that the representative said in the absence of a potential death sentence much broader cooperation would be possible so what this is clearly chickahominy floating out there that hed give them information that could be valuable but 1st theyve got to convince the government to basically take the Death Penalty off the table no response yet from anyone inside the u. S. Government but this is also a group of people the 911 victims and the survivors they have a lot of sway they were able to get this congress to change the law and precedent override a president ial veto which doesnt pretty much happen ever about 10 percent of the time so if they see that if they feel that he could give them evidence they might push representatives to make the deal well the f. B. I. How likely are how is this likely to go down in washington given president trumps close relationship with the saudi kingdom. The president has an incredibly close relationship with the kingdom of saudi arabia normally precedent is that the u. S. President stays out of judicial decisions this is usually a Justice Department to department of defense that those people in those departments decide exactly what to do this is a president who has shown himself willy not just to interfere in the u. S. Justice system but in systems of other countries for example sweden when it comes to the case of the american rapper whos been held in custody so its not clear we havent heard from the president he was talking about saudi arabia 9911 today when he signed a bill giving money for the 1st responders but he does have an incredibly close relationship with saudi arabia in fact hes overridden hes had just 3 vetoes in his presidency 2 of them were to protect saudi arabia and its involvement in the war in yemen in the senate just moments ago was unable to override that veto so it would not clear how the president might react but in the past his instinct has been to protect saudi arabia thank you very much patty cohen of the view from washington. Well glenn karl was a Deputy National Intelligence Officer for the transnational threats at the cia and joins us from boston via skype gets a heavy on the program thank you very much now i had to call him was explaining these are 2 separate cases Khalid Shaikh mohammeds terrorism trial by the u. S. Government seeking the Death Penalty and then a civil lawsuit against the saudi government by the victims and their families of 911. 00 how likely is it that a deal could be worked out and is there a president for this kind of a case or combines case as well i think the 2nd question 1st to my knowledge there is no precedent 5 everything about the detainees at guantanamo the detainees from war in terror are related and enhanced interrogation rendition issues is all unprecedented so its the challenge has been long the challenges has been even to find a way to have a trial the Intelligence Community and the Law Enforcement unities are both wary of having a trial in the normal Justice System the proposal by the Bush Administration to have military tribunals has been challenged as not acceptable process of law and no one really has known what to do so everything is unprecedented. The 1st part is a deal. A clean sort of arrangement and press and the answer to that is no thats a standard procedure in most American Court systems that the prosecution and defense may find a way to shorten the trial and reach a verdict that is minimally acceptable for both parties so thats possible now as far as National Intelligence officer whats your instinct with with this what kind of a sense are you getting is it likely that Khalid Shaikh mohammed would have concrete evidence that would help the civil case or is this more of a desperate attempt to you know avoid an execution or a death sentence. Well i think he is largely what the almost entirely what the United States government has said he is which was the really the planner the mastermind if there was a single one of the 911. 00 attacks and so he does know quite a bit of vote the structure of al qaida the individual personalities citizens taken how things happened a lot of that was his his thinking so i think he does that information certainly. Isnt usable in a court of law in the United States is one of the Big Questions and thats not all the answer to that is not at all clearly yes because information obtained has been tainted. The defense claims and with cause by having used illegal methods and has interrogation which is euphemism for torture just for starters so i mean given that the trials the guantanamo trials have been marred in pretrial hearings have been delayed time and time again where are they with regards to to the trials of that at 911 defendants and in that sense it is this possibly a good idea to to allow a defendant to testify at a separate top trial. Without being deeply immersed as a lawyer in the the goal twists and turns on either side of the question here concerning Khalid Shaikh mohammad my buy but as an Intelligence Officer my initial reaction is that there would not be a problem i would not see a problem in him testifying it can be done in ways that if sensitive issues for the Intelligence Community iraq is that you do things behind seal doors in camera its called with clear personnel so that doesnt seem to be an obstacle i think that he would have information that is relevant is you trustworthy. Is yet another question and the answer to that is. Is that he is not really trustworthy although he has a great deal of information thank you very much glenn karl gate to great to get your insight on this thank you and the time. The u. S. And in other news there been more protests across saddam after the killing of activist in north kordofan state doctors say at least 5 people were killed by Security Forces when they opened fire on a demonstration they were protesting against the findings of an investigation into last months crackdown by the military into a bit morgan has more details from neighboring ethiopia. Was they came out of the classrooms in north kordofan state to complain about bread shortages and the rising cost of fuel and transport i. Was but minutes after the student protest started in the city of a moving Security Forces opened fire i. Want to show. My brother died as a martyr and i will not cry over him because god willing hes in heaven for blood we want to accept anything else. The funerals have been held for some of the several People Killed some reportedly by sniper shots to the head the Central Committee for sudans doctors which is allied to the opposition says doesnt sustained critical injuries oh. No that was. Following months of political turmoil more protests started on saturday protestors infuriated by the announcement from the Committee Investigating the prodemocracy sit in killings on 23rd in her 2 and the committee announced that the ruling military junta wasnt to blame and that 87. 00 protesters died activists see the truth is more than 100. 00. Hours after mondays killings in protesters in other cities came out to condemn the renewed violence many demanding that the Opposition Coalition known as the forces of freedom and change halt negotiations with the ruling military joins us to form a Transitional Government. Both sites signed an initial power sharing agreement earlier this month but are yet to agree on a final deal and former government some activists are concerned that the talks and deals seem to be centered only in the capital is this something that only happens outside areas that are not part of the center is it like people in the center can come out and protest and theyre ok but people are free cant so we need to know the answers to these questions. As talks between the Opposition Coalition and the military gen to continue to do the demand 1st of willing government as well as calls for justice and accountability not just for the lives lost in for tumi june but for the sudanese killed in protests in many other states nationwide since. The. People morgan are just there oh i just if you. At least 57. 00 inmates were killed in a prison riot in brazil 16 of them were beheaded violence that lasted for 5 hours the others suffocated to death after their cells were set on fire rival gangs attacked each other in a prison and the Southwest Region a parra 2 of the staff were held hostage we could not go live to that as a bow and who is in what has areas there is a what more can you tell us about this. Well as you just said this began at 7 oclock in the morning when one criminal organization attacked another part of the president apparently they try to set up several fires along the way in order to prevent authorities from the area where the major fighting took place for what we know right now is at least 57. 00 people died 6 team of them were decapitated and the others were suffocated because of the fire the persons in charge of the prison are saying that this was a targeted attack that it was not a riot it was mostly a settling of account between rival organizations something thats quite frequent in brazil right now there is an investigation to find out exactly what happened with this organizations was power goal well beyond the prison walls the minister of justice said as you morrow has called for an emergency meeting has also isolated the leaders of those who are responsible of this tax within the prison and is increasing security afraid of repro prices but at this point what theyre saying is that his situation is under control and there is a violence in prisons is not uncommon but the level of the violence and brutality seems to happen with so much regularity and brazil whys that. Well its a common problem in brazil and the last incident that happened is last may when at least 55 people died in another type of riots in several prisons in the state of a muscle and as thats right next to again northern brazil next to bite out where this latest incident took place thats when 55 people lost their lives and its not uncommon as you just said and theyre very very brutal brazil has one of the highest homicide rates in the world it has the words 3rd largest prison populations of prisons that are overcrowded with inhumane the situation inside is inhumane according to many of the reports and human Rights Groups have been denouncing for many many years and what they say that most of the incidents that happen inside the prison are between rival organizations most of them Drug Trafficking organizations that fight for control not only inside the prison but also outside and the brutality they use is to keep gang members in line and thats why the images that were seeing coming out of brazil of the situation that we see inside the prison are so violent because they want to set an example of what happens or what could happen to rival organizations theres been several attempts to reform brazils prison but most of those attempts have been superficial they have not been able to resolve the Serious Problems the overcrowding the amount of guards the small amount of guards that i keep in control in many of these prisons thank you very much there is a vote from as areas for us well lets get a run through of some of those thoughts at her as a describe for us brazil has the worlds 3rd largest prison population and prison violence has been an ongoing issue 56 prisoners were killed in may when fighting broke out in 4 different jails in Amazonas States and 10 inmates died from gang related violence last year at a prison in the countrys north these during sierra state the worst incident happened 2 years ago when nearly 150 prisoners were killed in weeks of violence between rival gangs. Jeffrey lesser from Emory University joins us live on skype from sao paulo he specializes in modern latin American History focusing on ethnicity immigration and race especially and brazil thank you very much for coming on the program perhaps you could shed some light on us on the level of brutality were seeing in these prison riot so that prison riots all over the world but in brazil they seem to be exceptionally brutal and violent why is that the few issues that are right here what is the overriding issue. Is what are the issue of the only story between right or the organization theyre all crowded by 2 or more and so is that what youre seeing here is a kind of human rights issue where people were put to put together very very small circumstances and then is your reporter going to do with. These riots or just leading to whats going on in the prison whether they are often left to tensions between criminal organizations busy outside the prison which they get was all busy if you will approach right and so one of the main issues with brazil having such a high incarceration rate is the gang the gang culture that exists what happens to these prisoners these former gang members once they leave prison is there an attempt to rehabilitate them or a or even change the culture and or do they just go back on the streets. There is very very little. Their Emergency Services for rehabilitation of the prison system shoals or the office of the rehabilitated they are telling all busy. Young people and making them into all more hardened criminals and in bars because brazil has been so it was an extremely weak state and because the state is weak. Again explaining so what well have in these cases are for example a lack of regard stars who are poorly paid a lack of police a lack of services in the prisons for themselves and so not surprisingly the president just because a kind of a the coolest order with the flagship of the 2 other issues that are going on in pursuing in society which is so i was very very hard on the cycling its its an extremely violent country. Inter in terms of in terms of policy right and so im that brings me to my next question to why then the issue out why does brazil have such a prevalence of culture of gangs and why is it tolerated by the government. I think there are to fill reasons i say you cant understand the culture of games without understanding all the other aspects of. Iraq i dont want to overdo in culture but politically in society. From what weve gone. Over them weak Central Government so you have a great deal of corruption because the stage isnt fully. Invested including else you have a great deal of that ality because the state cant get involved in that way and so in jittery since 101 every minute of the world when the state is weak the other comes of busy organizations who are in the brazilian case its criminal organizations and these criminal organizations and then. Only cage to individuals who themselves to represent the state so were constantly hearing about situations in which there may be a politician whos standing will follow their campaign bungs or through criminal organizations of the stall and so on and so even you we wouldnt expect to see a diminution in criminal activity but actually we see an expansion of it and a continuation of it because its not just criminal activity its power over the water all. The brazilian government all structural political structure and so thats a kind of prison on prison violence as like me to press said thank you very much Jeffrey Glasser joining us from sao paulo thank you thank you. The british pound has fallen to a 28 month low against the dollar on the back of Prime Minister Boris Johnsons hardline brags that rhetoric analysts say the pound could fall even further as fears grow over the likelihood of a no deal for exit johnson wants to negotiate a new deal with leaders that is refusing to meet them so they open the existing agreement well hes facing opposition from scotlands leader nicolas sturgeon shes accusing him of pushing britain towards a no deal breaks it and the bobber reports from edinburgh there warnings that the politics in westminster could threaten the unity of the whole country. After they me to get her official residence she repeated her warning behind all the bluff and bluster this government and the path that it is pursuing i think is dangerous it became clear to me that this government the new Prime Minister has said that you key on an almost inevitable path to a new deal breaks at the position that it has taken that makes it very difficult to see how any do you can be stuck with the e. Syrian Government Airstrikes have killed at least 14 civilians in hama and provinces activists say the governments weeklong aerial attacks have been the bloodiest in 3 months hospitals have been targeted and there are few left to treat the injured in order as this report in turkey which is near the syrian border. Syria has left at least 2000 men women and children with injuries many of them severe and there arent many hospitals still operating in the rebel held province of idlib thats because Health Facilities have been destroyed in airstrikes that International Aid agencies say seem to be targeted attacks in breach of International Humanitarian law. The alleged 911 attacks mastermind offers to cooperate in a lawsuit against saudi arabia if the u. S. Drops seeking the Death Penalty against him. Alone welcome im david pollen youre watching others there live from doha it is good to have your company also coming up. More protests in sudan after Security Forces opened fire at a demonstration in north cardiff on killing 5 people. At least 57 inmates were killed in a prison fights between rival gangs in northern brazil. Were going to come are just deal with a deal all over the. On the u. K. Prime minister warns either leaders to change their brags that position or he wont even sit down for talks with them. So the alleged mastermind of the september 11th attacks says he may be willing to help the victims in their lawsuit against saudi arabia and return Khalid Shaikh mohammed wants the u. S. Government to seek the Death Penalty against him the saudi government has been accused of supporting those behind the 2001 attacks which killed nearly 3000 people the attackers hijacked 4 planes and flew them into the World Trade Center the pentagon and a pennsylvania field saudi arabia denies any involvement. And from washington d. C. Heres patagonian explaining the proceedings for the Court Proceeding so far this offer of assistance 1st comes in this court filing its all part of the lawsuit from the survivors and victims of 911. 00 against the government of saudi arabia so as part of this process the lawyer said that they needed to speak with the people who are in custody accused of being a can be behind or committing the 911 attacks one of those is collegiate muhammad so in this fall in the lawyer said they reached out to his representatives and hes choosing not to cooperate in this deposition at this time and they say the main reason is because fear of the Death Penalty in the go on to say that he would be much more willing to cooperate if the Death Penalty was no longer a concern the problem for the lawyers in this 911. 00 case is this is a civil litigation what the hes referring to is the criminal trial so theyre really not connected to each other that said these victims these survivors they do have a lot of sway in congress they were able to get congress to change the law so that they could even susa the arabia the president the time president barack obama vetoed that legislation and they were able to override a veto which is something thats pretty much only done in about 10 percent of the cases so they have some sway to put pressure on the government that said the current president do us President Donald Trump has shown an willingness to go against saudi arabia at all so if this would put them in jeopardy its unlikely that the president would push for a plea deal to be made for klute Shaikh Muhammad this is unusual most of the time president s dont get involved in judicial proceedings but this is a president who has shown hes willing to do that not just in the u. S. But abroad as well. Well lets get you some background the 55 year old shaikh Khalid Shaikh mohammad was an alleged al qaeda operative who was captured in pakistan has been held for nearly 13 years at the u. S. Military base at Guantanamo Bay in cuba where he and 4 others are charged with war crimes he was a subjected to the socalled enhanced interrogations by the cia without a trial and 2008 the United States an ounce it will seek the Death Penalty against him a year later mom had confessed and pleaded guilty to the attacks he has not been convicted yet well earlier i spoke to the former cia officer glenn carle and he says its unclear how useful Khalid Shaikh mohammeds testimony would be in court he does know quite a bit about the structure of al qaida the individual personalities citizens taken how things happened a lot of that was his his thinking so i think he does have information certainly. Isnt usable in a court of law in the United States is one of the Big Questions and thats not all the answer to that is not at all clearly yes because information obtained has been tainted. The defense claims and with is caused by having used illegal methods and has interrogation which is you who is in pretoria just for starters its almost triumphal likely to be able to sell billions of dollars for the weapons to saudi arabia after a last ditch effort to stop him failed u. S. Senators were unable to reach the 2 thirds majority needed to override trumps vetoes of previous legislations pos by Congress Politicians opposed to the sales fear that the weapons could be used against civilians in the war in yemen. And other news there been more protests across saddam off the killing of activists in north cardiff on state doctors say at least 5 people were killed by Security Forces when they opened fire in a demonstration they were protesting against the findings of an investigation into last months crackdown by the military about morgan has more details from neighboring ethiopia. Following months of political turmoil more protests started on saturday protestors infuriated by the announcement from the Committee Investigating the prodemocracy sit in killings on 23rd in her 2 on the committee announced that the ruling military junta wasnt to blame and that 87. 00 protesters died activists see the truth is more than 100. 00. Hours after mondays killings in protesters in other cities came out to condemn the renewed violence many demanding that the Opposition Coalition known as the forces of freedom and change halt negotiations with the ruling military to form a Transitional Government both sites signed an initial power sharing agreement earlier this month but are yet to agree on a final deal and form a government some activists are concerned that the talks and deals seem to be centered only in the capital is this something that only happens outside areas that are not part of the center is it like people in the center can come out and protest and theyre ok but people if we cant arent so we need you know answers to these questions. As talks between the Opposition Coalition and the military gen to continue to do the demand 1st of all in government as well as calls for justice and accountability not just for the lives lost in for the tomb in june but for the sudanese killed in protests in many other states nationwide since the. People Morgan Al Jazeera i just if you opium. At least 57. 00 inmates were killed in a prison riot and brazil 16 of them were beheaded during violence that lasted for 5 hours the other suffocated to death after their cells were set on fire rival gangs attacked each other in prison in the Southwest Region apart or 2 of the staff were held hostage that has a bow has more details from one of the areas. Another brutal riots in brazil this time in the city of media in the Northern State of apparently at 7 oclock in the morning this monday a group of gang members tried to take over another side of the prison there and thats what started this fighting apparently they set up several roadblocks of fires in order to prevent also relief from reaching the area thats where the major fighting took place and thats where as least 52 people were killed 16 of them were beheaded and the others died because of social cation its not clear yet what started the fighting most of these are saying that its fighting between them for control of drugs around that area but its not clear yet and there is an investigation ongoing the minister of justice in brazil said as your model calls for an urgent meeting he also isolated the gang members that increased security in that area this whole incident lasted for about 5 hours but this type of prison riots are very common in northeastern brazil mostly because it has one of the 3rd of the worlds 3rd largest prison population one of the highest homicide rates in the world the situation in the prisons with overcrowding violence and inhumane condition is what makes the situation even worse and thats why in a way what gang members use brutal ways in order to send messages to those from rival organizations most of the government have taken immediate action in order to solve the situation increase Security Intelligence among other things but they do not solve the real problems within the prisons which is mostly overcrowding and also shortages of stuff among other things. Well heres some context brazil has the worlds 3rd largest prison population and violence in crime jails has been a security challenge for president j. Or balsa not 0 now in may 56 prisoners were killed when clashes broke out across 4 different jails and i was on a state 10 inmates died from gang related violence last year at a prison in the countrys North Eastern sierra state the worst happened 2 years ago when nearly 150 prisoners were killed in weeks of violence between rival gangs Jeffrey Lesser is the director of the klaas and how institute for Global Research at Emory University and he says the harsh conditions in prison offer little room for inmates rehabilitation. These riots arent just relieving to whats going on in the prison rather theyre often a tensions between criminal organizations outside of the prison which then get resolved busy if you will inside the person that is there theres very very little. Here if you services for rehabilitation of the prison system so are the offices are rehabilitated they are taking off busy of. Young people and making them into off more hardened criminals and that in part is because brazil has this in some ways an extremely weak state and because the state is weak the criminal gangs expand so what you have in these cases are for example a lack of guards guards who are poorly a lack of police a lack of services in the prisons themselves and so not surprisingly the prison just because a kind of a holistic order with flaxen to other issues that are going on in Brazilian Society which itself has a very very high homicide rate its its an extremely violent country. Syrian Government Air strikes have killed at least 14 civilians and how provinces activists say the governments weeklong aerial attacks have been the bloodiest in 3 months hospitals have been targeted and there are few able to treat the injured they know how there has this report from a package in turkey near the syrian border. The intensive care unit is full of the war wounded the 3 month old russian backed Syrian Government offensive in northwest syria has left at least 2000 men women and children with injuries many of them severe and there arent many hospitals still operating in the rebel held province of idlib thats because Health Facilities have been destroyed in airstrikes that International Aid agencies say seem to be targeted attacks in breach of International Humanitarian law. They leave thank you think of the number of this is really an injury is coming to us and we cannot cool with. Number of patients because this number is they being pleasing and the kinds of injuries is different. And some like one year old but there we are now maimed for life civilians medical workers and Health Centers have all been targeted in the offensive the strategy appears to put pressure on the opposition support base in an attempt to force the rebels to surrender. After almost 8 weeks of military operations the Syrian Regime has been able to retrieve parts are huge chunks of the Demilitarized Zone and if not they have proven to be quite inefficient and Holding Ground so after 8 weeks theyve been only able to get around 1. 5 percent of the demon try still on the other hand oppositions been able to get 30 script and ahmed to areas that were under regime control. Lets go to hong kong now where protests are going underground with prodemocracy activists targeting trains during rush hour this is the scene and one of the underground train stations in hong kong right now around 5000000. 00 people use hong kongs rail network each day so widespread disruption by protesters could cripple the city sarah clarke is live for us in hong kong so sara whats the scene there. With the moment where one of the you have a cell to sell at a district home called this particular line where we get the huge number of commuters take home from us and so its a very busy trying line and we are at peak hours so it is creating comedic tiles and this china has not moved now for about half an hour now as you mentioned about 5000000. 00 people use the chinese system into now as its called here every day so this particular live being stopped its the protesters trying to to make amends to send a message down what the protests are doing is that theyre locking the doors and they scatter the whole way along the platform at each particular carriage at this stage its created communique else and now sarah the beijing government has made a rare comment on the hong kong protests saying that the priority is to restore law and order so what has that put off the protesters what is this protesters about and is it likely to continue as weve seen in the past few weeks. With this particular message today from these protests is that its a couple of things a couple of key issues number one theyre very angry at the Excessive Force that i believe was used on the protesters of the last few weekends we had the protests on the weekend which ended by clashes we also had the weekend before where we saw a number of confrontations with again the place for keys of using Excessive Force on those protests but the key issue for all of these so these these rallies is the the the cool the demand. The with the with all the dumping of this extradition bill this week there are more relics planned though despite chinas condemnation of these protests these groups there are a number of groups theyre planning a number of different rallies out there was one another one on friday saturday and sunday this wake up call to mind to put pressure on the government to dump this extradition bill to get sarah clarke live for us in hong kong about very busy train station thank you now indonesias state energy firm says it will take about 2 months to shut down a well thats spewing oil into the java sea and investigations begun into what caused the spill which began more than 2 weeks ago alexey obrien reports. These beaches are the backyards of villages along the streets of northern java and they covered with a black layer of oil thats choking sea life and the livelihoods of local fishermen some have joined the Cleanup Mission a backbreaking process thats expected to take several weeks. Im cleaning up the soil looks Like Crude Oil we get paid to do this 7. 00 a day. The oil is coming from a well that platform leaking into the ocean for almost 3 weeks the state Energy Company put him anuses its intensified efforts to slow the spill installing high speed water skimmers to suck up fuel from the surface and a static boom to contain a sprayed. Stuff that we care about the safety of people specially the fisherman we have coordinated with the military and police and we have patrol boats working 24 hours a day to isolate the location of the oil spill. The companies declared an emergency and brought in the experts that handled a similar spill in the gulf of mexico but they havent to fight the currents and the wind with the oil sheen spreading more than 80 kilometers. From here but the cause of the spill is still under investigation but we ask people not to worry because we have the best people handling the problem we have hired specialists who often deal with this problem even on a bigger scale. Its the 2nd potential environmental catastrophe for the company in just over a year and underwater pipeline burst off borneo last march spilling 40000. 00 barrels of crude oil it sparked a fire killing 5 fisherman the government ordered person maina to pay compensation for the pollution caused and improve safety procedures. Its too early to say how much oil spilled here in java or count the environmental cost but people here want the leak plugged and quickly alexie obrian aljazeera. Protesters are out on the streets in puerto rico us a leadership crisis there continues secretary of state scarce was set to take over as interim governor on august the 2nd after riccardo a seller resigned on thursday but she now says she doesnt want the job protestors had been demanding resellers resignation for weeks over offensive chat messages and government corruption in the already bankrupt territory the british pound has fallen against the dollar to its lowest since 2017 this is after Prime Minister Boris Johnsons hardline brags that rhetoric say the pound could fall even further as fears grow over the likelihood of no deal with the European Union johnson wants to negotiate a new braggs a deal with the leaders and is refusing to meet them and so they open the existing agreement. Well hes facing opposition from scotlands leader nicholas sturgeon shes accusing him of pushing britain to words. And asked that he baba reports from edinburgh there are warnings that the politics in westminster could threaten the unity of the whole country. Is in a smattering of applause for the u. K. Prime minister as a rifle told to scotlands 1st minister yes then shook hands but they were never going to see eye to eye even before he arrived nicolas surgeon warns Boris Johnson he could be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom if he delivered no deal breaks it its fair to say these 2 politicians have a very different vision of the future after their meeting at her official residence she repeated her warning behind all the bluff and bluster this government and the path that it is pursuing i think is dangerous it became clear to me that this government the new Prime Minister has set the uki on an almost inevitable path to a new deal breaks at the position that it has taken that makes it very difficult to see how any deal can be stopped with the e. U. Leaders if they dont agree to revisit the Withdrawal Agreement and scrap the socalled backstop designed to prevent a hard boarder in Northern Ireland is what we want to do is to make it absolutely clear that the backstop is no good it did its got to get there with broad agreement is dead its got to go but there is scope to do a new deal before meeting the 1st minister Boris Johnson headed to the Scottish Parliament for another tense meeting with the leader of the Scottish Branch of the conservative Party Ruth Davidson she says she supports the Prime Minister but has firmly rejected the idea of a no deal breaks it arguing nobody advocated it in the 2060 Referendum Campaign her allies are warning the johnson governments approach could boost support for independence which is already on the rise as a power for independence in scotland eyes almost 50 percent if not a majority but it is a serious conflict between the 2 governments then that could provoke another independence referendum maybe not immediately but after the next scottish elections the Scottish Government a far from the only people warning johnson hes in danger in the union whether they try to hold another independence vote in the near future could depend on whether politicians in westminster are able to stop him the dean barber al jazeera edinburgh. Hello youre watching out and let me take you through our top story the alleged mastermind of the september 11th attacks on the us he may be willing to help the victims in their lawsuit against saudi arabia and the return of Khalid Shaikh mohammad wants the u. Well those are the headlines well have more news after inside story. Its almost 2 years since more than 700000 ranger fled a military crackdown in ian knox since then theyve been crammed into squalid camps in bangladesh but mere miles government is under pressure to take them back so what are they offering and is it enough this is inside story. Hello and welcome to the program on Martine Dennis the range of people have been called the most persecuted minority in the world me a mob doesnt even recognize this mainly muslim ethnic group as citizens and in 2017 it began a crackdown after attacks on its army by some. Of the un labelled what followed a textbook example of ethnic cleansing soldiers were accused of killing and raping ranger and destroying their villages will than 700000. 00 of them managed to escape to bangladesh saying they wouldnt return until near guarantees a safety and gives them citizenship a government delegation has spent 2 days trying to convince them to leave the Worlds Largest refugee camp and to go home to record from where they fled 2 years ago. At least those who live in treaty and regions they are entitled to apply for the what we call naturalized citizen once parents apply for their natural citizenship. Sons and daughters their offspring are entitled to apply for their citizenship so we are trying to explain to them what are the possibility of citizenship so of course according to the lot they may not be entitled for the full fledged citizenship but they are entitled to naturalized citizenship and eventually their sons and daughters and grandsons and daughters will be entitled for the citizenship full fledged citizenship foundering. Definitely will not be consider it as an issue for us because well be granting them as an nationality of myanmar and then eventually we will be providing them with the id cards. All right lets introduce our guests now in dhaka in bangladesh we have ranger recession and writer. In ny fiddle in mia ma via skype we have Phil Robertson Deputy Director of the Asia Division that Human Rights Watch and from london we have ronan levy visiting scholar at the International State Crime Initiative at Queen Mary University of london welcome to you all thought i want to ask you 1st. From what you heard from that senior Government Official whos currently in coaxes bizarre trying to persuade the range of refugees to go back home from what you heard did that fill you with confidence does that make you think that you would like to go back home to me a mile. Around to say that theyre not coming to come is this theyve. Theyre coming to in those days which is number one number 2 team there john berman did not read the 1982 citizenship law in one does it if you use it in law to read honorees and we automate it became the citizen full citizen of the country because i want is as is is. On the civilized citizens there are certain generals or no will be automatic full fledged agency but hes now hes saying that that hes done a reasonably only never lie citizens that is wrong with the 9 dimity to citizen law and hes right ok. Ok im on so so sorry coming to coming to you having a very i man ill come back to you in just just a moment lets now go to to Phil Robertson whos in one of the capital of me and more from what youve heard is there anything new in what the government is offering to the. Im on clearly thinks that theres not much involved at all that compass wait people back. They have a very hard road to hold to get these people to go back because theres no trust whatsoever. Of these promises that the myanmar Government Officials are making to those people in the camps the reality is that people want to return and have citizenship guaranteed they have heard these promises theyve heard that they can go through these procedures the 1902 citizenship law is something that has been on the books and basically been discriminatory and hurtful to the rohingya and they are not trustful of it and theyre not trustful of what the government is promising here so i think that the government me on my has to do a lot better there i persuade people to go back and rein and said what the government seems to be offering the the nub of it seems to be some sort of pathway to citizenship or the possibilities of citizenship is what they calling it all the or hinge a for the most part right not to trust the government. Theyre 100 percent right not to trust the myanmar government as government has on a number of occasions over the last 50 years violently forced hundreds of thousands of or him out of the country and then when this International Pressure for them to be returned theyve allowed a fraction to return usually with diminished rights so the situation in northern Rakhine State that we can see today hasnt improved over the last 2 years you could argue i think quite strongly that its that its gotten worse but whether or not there is goodwill on the part of the me and mar authorities i think is demonstrated by the actions in and around sit way where there are 10120000 drinking or living in camps that they were forced into in 2012 theyre still there i mean these are concentration camps theres no violence in that area this is an area that me and i would describe as peaceful yet theyve heard ripping into camps right i think the reader right do not trust the ok and a man i mean ronan has already indicated that the persecution of the ranger goes way beyond 2017 doesnt it which is the the period of time that were looking at now you had to flee miramar many years before 1985 tell us about the circumstances that led you to leave your country. As i live from bar moment in a device because of worlds fear of eras where the government out of the before the school days of the for about 15 years those of the school in as to the schools. So in 19 people and in and from and they made defoe there look there trigamy 2 areas i have to do comparable to. To flee from my country in 1985. And and ever since then youve been in bangladesh have you presumably still stateless presumably without any kind of travel documents identity documents am i right yeah soon them i was not i have no legal status and well im well and what sort of problems does that present for a person to have no legal status what does it mean for your life on a daily basis i can i stay here standing in the under the sun in braces but if anyone is me i cannot do anything im on their way arrested. What do you mean if somebody challenges seem to mean if theres a notification or a dispute youre not protected by law or maybe yeah damn i have no. Right no i gotta stay here and work here. Even i can meet some of the authority of this county but if someone makes anything against me no protection. And fill it with police and us me i have no protection right ok fill your currently in ny fedora i mean that the me and my government has been. Has been noted for its lack of cooperation for its lack of infusion as into engage with the outside well presumably Human Rights Watch now being in the capital is quite a rare thing what do you hope to achieve and what do you what are you picking up about the need music while shell there well you know we hope that the government will ultimately recognize that it has to do right by the road it has to all to mentally ensure accountability for what has happened to the road in addition to allowing them to come back to have security guarantees to have citizenship to have freedom of movement all the things that the kofi anon did commission called for in Rakhine State and we hope that this will be something that the International Community will see through as well that they will continue to pressure me on my intil those goals are achieved because i think ultimately the reason that were actually having this delegation going to caucuses bazaar is because the pressure has been unrelenting on the myanmar government that they have to bring these people back and they have to bring them back in a way that is dignified voluntary and safe for them and no one has talked about the security guarantees either though i mean this is a big issue for the rowing as well i mean they dont want to return to an area where the security is provided by the same army and police. That were involved in the violations against the crimes against humanity that occurred in 2017 right and ronan so so fills of the opinion that International Condemnation is building up a certain head of pressure and thats led to this delegation go to coxs bizarre but it apparently hasnt yielded in anything substantial in terms of the substance of the offer or the substance of of of of what theyre putting on the table for these refugees many of whom seem already to be saying no way were not going back with the substance of the office exactly the same as they were offered before they left which is very little its the ability to participate in a discriminatory citizenship process and to live in a part of the country where there is quite frankly an Apartheid Regime designed to discriminate against them what me and mark is changing at the moment i think because of the International Pressure is its International Messaging and i would consider the decision to visit in the camps in bangladesh not as part of an attempt to convince rethink it to return but as part of a messaging to the International Community its an attempt by me and mars authorities to demonstrate that he is doing something to encourage to return and what they say is that the International Community now needs to increase the pressure on me and ma weve seen very little in terms of holding perpetrators to account for their actions to be during 2017 i mean there was there were crimes against humanity committed in against the regime at that time and no perpetrators have been held to account for that to some travel bans. Generals wont be able to visit the United States for instance sent and facebook means that theyre not able to be on facebook so they cant pay. Holiday pictures as as as people sort of often describe. What the penalty is for them but but nothing in terms of seriously holding perpetrators to account right thats what now needs to happen the needs to be support i think for the International Criminal court ok good thought to go back to phil way so phil when were talking about the International Community stepping up the pressure upon the government of of me a man who we specifically talking about because obviously thats a huge. World community isnt it and i think was specifically talking about its neighbors for instance assy and you to be meeting in bangkok in the next week ill say china of course the biggest the biggest defender if you like of of the me im a Government Action is this where the pressure really needs to come from in order to affect some change fell well i think obviously i see on is a critical part of this but they are hopeless when it comes to applying a pressure to any sort of member state all theyve done so far is done a bit of a survey of the repatriation regimen and what would possibly happen if people came back you know they put out a report that leaked last month that frankly was very inadequate didnt address any of the issues about why the running a fled bangladesh in the 1st place it just glossed over that and immediately went to the operational aspects of it that then thats not enough but i think what we need to do is we need to have the United States and the e. U. And also the u. K. To press much harder on sanctions against the top generals i think the u. S. Treasury has to follow through on that travel ban by the u. S. State department you know and really go after the generals and their assets i think also we have to be looking at the 2 major corporations that operate under military control in myanmar the union of Myanmar Economic Holdings and the Economic Corporation these are huge conglomerates with a great deal. Gauge when the International Community and their pressure points that the International Community needs now to push on in order to get some accountability here to sort of get some political commitment from the government of myanmar that they will in fact hold top military people accountable right and coming back to you and your life as a stateless person in bangladesh is exceedingly precarious we can get that from from from what youve told us already are you not in the least bit tempted go back to again what you me and food was saying in culture is bizarre he was saying pretty soon that there will be id cards where there will no longer be the issue of race or the issue of citizenship it will only be like Social Security cards in the United States with names and some digits do you think that that is something that you and the people you know would be interested in exploring and perhaps going home and getting an ear id. Murders are not legal this is. There at all or is. Lying to the people learned to do or one in 9091 the un or. The bombing of the government to give an Identity Card they give a year look at it here they are say that it is the process step to the citizens you know on the good into there and b. C. No theyre saying that is a hostile to of their plight see decency. In burma there was no other citizens. Riya all are holding the National School tomorrow just as good or nice its not citizens it got even aus and susie when me and you know im lying right in the ny minute to do citizens theres no as good an as cut the national id cut are no one here still right has an idea that an important as they are and always playing with the color of god and right yeah im other than that im on we all are already weve got our citizens there right tell us among what life in me in ma is like when you have a yellow college or an id card but you dont have citizenship what does that mean for the life of a person in me in law who is ranger you have not in to do you have the no right to move and the right to family value right to 0 right to do gave him a right to have. Here is a no on the only here is to give the texas non one texas and the style of the united texans their government whenever they did the there are people has to be of them if you study the terrorists that are of the country we peoples are the most. Desperate people in the in burma right im coming coming to you phil what is the situation now in record stay there recently some satellite pictures released by an Australian Group which apparently showed the remnants of villages that had been razed completely to the ground i mean what do the authorities present as he will tentative accommodation for these people should they decide to take up the offer and and go back home. Well what were seeing is in some cases villages that people abandoned because of the atrocities who fled into they fled into bangladesh and there theyre standing villages are now being destroyed weve seen in other instances where partially destroyed villages are completely destroyed and just flattened the question is what is being offered to to these people who would go back and theyre talking about going back to the same area or theyre talking about somewhere nearby but again these are just promises that have not been fully explained you know people want to go back to their areas but the problem is even if they go back are they going to be allowed freedom of movement are they going to be allowed access to basic essential Services Like access to Health Access to education will they be able to move about and pursue livelihoods i mean the freedom of Movement Issue and the security issue is the core of the major problem here that if theyre able to return will they be able to survive or will they return to the defacto apartheid situation that we see in the i. D. P. Camps in the central part of the state where you know ronan said very clearly you know they could have done something to improve that situation they have not done so and that really raises some questions about the political commitment of the authorities to allow true freedom of movement and real rights for the running of people right and rain and a space its useful to remind ourselves that mia mary is a a country a medium size country with 135. 00 official ethnic groups thats a hell of a lot isnt it in terms of reckoning state were concentrating on the plight of the range of people but there are other ethnic groups as well who feel themselves to be marginalized and quite often brutalized as well by the mean mouth artists. World they are the United Nations Human Rights Council Investigation Team highlighted crimes against humanity committed by me and miles military against groups in the chain state shan state and Rakhine State so its a Major International report highlighting that serious crimes by me and mars military not just against the really good but against other groups and that the key point here is that me and mars military is constitutionally above the law there is no one in the government who can hold them to account so its really now up to the International Community to do that now you could argue that Aung San Suu Kyi as the civilian leader of the country has some i think moral authority to hold the military to account but shes demonstrated that shes not interested in doing that right he has absolutely no interest in calling out the military so its really left up to the International Community run this film as phil suggested the a key way to do that is to take away their sources of income. Or ite fill in naypyidaw in recommends stayed there seems to be several axes of conflict its not just the military is it. Attacking the ranger there are also monks there are also ordinary civilians or who are nationalists of one order or another so it seems as though there are many different layers of violence that the particular record in the north west of the state could face so the security guarantees are essential for these people if if indeed theyre going to go back home. Thats absolutely true and the reality is that people are also going to face discriminatory restrictions from the state authorities and from the local authorities this is why i think if you talk to the ruling on coxs bazaar theyre talking about International Security guarantees they want International People being Access Allowed access to northern Rakhine State you know theyve even talked about u. N. Peacekeepers which i think is unrealistic but the fact is that even humanitarians or people like monitors from the Un Refugee Agency are not able to get into the areas where mars proposing to send these rohingya without International Access and some sort of protective mandate for International Staff to be able to go in these areas and monitor what happened i think its be very difficult for the government of myanmar to persuade the running going to go back right and give the last word to you on having listened to all of this do you think he will ever ever be able to go back when youve been outside of your country for more than 20 years will you ever be able to go home at the moment in burma the power will is of the army she she can do an undue of really do anything any time in any means the governments are not going to do the end of the government is only like food lets try again which rather stand by lehman if the me and the on call me that to me by televised anime then something and. So. At present and i didnt do it can go back to hold on leaves and im living down as an economy in the. Security as a safe area. And the the believe the rule of. With the people who are in custody accused of being a can being behind or committing the 911 attacks one of those is collegiate muhammad so in this fall in the lawyer say they reached out to his representatives and hes choosing not to cooperate in this deposition at this time and they say the main reason is because fear of the Death Penalty in the go on to say that he would be much more willing to cooperate if the Death Penalty was no longer a concern the problem for the lawyers in this 911 case is this is a civil litigation what the hes referring to is the criminal trial so theyre really not connected to each other that said these victims these survivors they do have a lot of sway in congress they were able to get congress to change the law so that they could even susa to arabia the president the time president barack obama vetoed that legislation and they were able to override a veto which is something thats pretty much only done in about 10 percent of the cases so they have some sway to put pressure on the government that said the current president do us President Donald Trump has shown an willingness to go against saudi arabia at all so if this would put them in jeopardy its unlikely that the president would push for a plea deal to be made for klute Shaikh Muhammad this is unusual most of the time president s dont get involved in judicial proceedings but this is a president who has shown hes willing to do that not just in the u. S. But abroad as well u. S. Senators have failed to stop the sale of 8000000000. 00 worth the weapons to saudi arabia they couldnt reach the 2 thirds majority needed to override Donald Trumps fetus a previous loss prost by Congress Politicians opposed to the sales fear that weapons could be used against civilians in the war and yemen sudans Opposition Leaders have called for more protests over the killing of students and activists in north cardiff on state doctors haleys 5 people including 4 schoolchildren were shot dead by Security Forces. Those are the headlines stay with us now for the program in iraq a deadly deception. September 11th. In the ruins of new york America Votes to defeat terrorism but this promise is quickly betrayed. George bush changes enemies asuna bin laden is replaced by Saddam Hussein. To see it is getting this sudden turn in love is the result of an extraordinary deception with devastating consequences for the world. Everything begins less than 6 hours after the attack at the pentagon which was also strong secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld scans the rubble and he issues his instructions Stephen Campbell one of his advisors takes notes rumsfelds intentions are unequivocal. The evening of that tragedy president bush addresses america and the world. Today our fellow citizens our way of life are very freedom came under attack. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. We will make no distinction this essentially detail was inspired by a key figure in the pentagon Richard Powell. On the afternoon of 911 places a call to the president s speech writer. I was on the telephone with david frum and i said to david. On the afternoon of 911. 00 whatever else the president says he should say that we will hold responsible the states that support terrorists safeguard it is a strategic break from the more modest policies of bush is pretty decisive. I believe it represented a recognition. That we would never succeed against the terrorists if we went after them one at a time and as long as governments were facilitating the Organization Training equipping and financing of terrorist organizations we were never going to get it under control. And Ambitious Program for all out war a goal in line with neoconservative policy and thinking an approach supported by Richard Powell. Dick cheney Donald Rumsfeld Condoleezza Rice Paul Wolfowitz Douglas Feith these are the advisors who have bushs. Joe wilson a career diplomat witnessed the rice. They came into office with the Republican Party and particular with the staffing done by the Vice President and his office and the secretary of defense in his office. Referred to was real conservatives they have ties to the world of oil to the Defense Industry they are strong proponents of American Global domination. Saddam hussein softened by years of sanctions is in its time. On the evening of 911. 00 the president saying well maybe you know we will be going after iraq now and somebody said well. That would be a guess since International Law the president responded i dont care it was going to kick a few days after the World Trade Center. And the pentagon were attacked the president was at camp david with his senior officials and mr wolfowitz was telling the president. The iraq and Saddam Hussein is the real problem. New goals were different change the regime in baghdad to subjugate iraq a simpler objective. And that of destroying the elusive terrorist. 900. 00 those in support of eliminating Saddam Hussein and meet at the ministry of defense the pentagon. They all began asking questions about how long can we continue this policy aimed at keeping saddam under control and that inclusion they came to was not much longer the day after the meeting at the pentagon president bush addresses congress. It is a historic moment the nation is united bush names the culprits Osama Bin Laden al qaida the taliban regime in afghanistan our enemies are radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them. No mention about iraq but he warns our war on terror. Begins with al qaeda. But it does not in their. Tony blair the british Prime Minister and guest of honor applause its symbolic of the unwavering alliance between washington and london. The taliban are quickly driven out of kabul and al qaeda is dispersed. Some of bin laden disappears. In washington bush appears eager to move on to another war i stand by those words afghanistan is still just a beginning if anybody harbors terrorists or terrorist if they find a terrorist or terrorist if they have terrorist or terrorist i mean i cant make it any more clearly to other nations around the world if they develop weapons of mass destruction that will be used to terrorize nations they will be held accountable. After this speech secretary of defense rumsfeld meets with general tommy franks at Central Command in tampa florida. Franks controls a massive area from africa to asia and leads the war in afghanistan but rumsfeld has Something Else in mind iraq. He orders general franks to prepare a plan of attack. Since his invasion of kuwait in the gulf war and 991 large parts of iraq had been under an international no fly zone. Despite iraqs defeat and the terrible sanctions that were decimating his people saddam remained in power. In 1998 he drove u. N. Inspectors sent to disarm him saddam was a dangerous man dangerous 1st to his own citizens and dangerous to the rest of the world. Joe wilson knows iraq well in 1991 in baghdad he was the last american diplomat to meet with Saddam Hussein saddam was hemmed in. He was not a threat he had been turned from a major Regional Power into a 3rd rate dictator. Just over 100. 00 days after the attacks of 911. 00 still fighting. In afghanistan america looks for another war Richard Powell publishes what is essentially a declaration of war. The same day franks visits bush at his ranch in texas in front of journalists the 2 men speak of the successes against the taliban in afghanistan where taliban got the country secure the Country Stable we will destroy the Al Qaeda Terrorist Network inside afghanistan it will take as long as it takes thank you all. But in private bush confirms to franks the order to attack iraq. This change in priority worries the general who on february 19th 2002 confides in bob graham florida senator and chairman of the Senate Intelligence committee. After a briefing which was quite upbeat with the progress that was being made the general asked me to meet privately in his office and the 1st thing he said was were no longer fighting a war in afghanistan i was stunned by that and i asked him what the mean and he said that some of the important personnel such is special operations units were being moved from afghanistan to get ready for a war in iraq. Bushs decision is fraught with consequences the fight against terrorism is put on the back burner in favor of a conventional war in the middle east not the most predictable region in the world. In early 2002 the military machine is set in motion all the trimmings is to convince the public of the need to go to war with a country that seems far removed from the tragedy that struck america. Under base of each former army colonel and professor of military history. Having made that decision to go toward the political necessity was to sell the war to the American People that they had prepared a significant profit and operation to sell the war at a time when the press was very receptive to whatever the administration might be saying in its efforts to defend the United States against yet another attack and weapons of mass destruction seemed to people on the inside to offer the best mechanism to complete the selling job. W m d s weapons of mass destruction Chemical Biological nuclear for months this deadly arsenal will be at the heart of the iraqi deception the stakes are high in a power struggle between the proponents of war and those who oppose it i was listening to briefings detailed top secret briefings from the cia the defense Intelligence Agency and other intelligence organizations and they all believed. Believed very strongly that saddam had multiple programs to develop weapons of mass destruction in reality there is no consensus on the existence of w n ds for years american intelligence has been monitoring iraq and has found nothing we spend billions literally billions of dollars a year with what we Call National technical means which everyone knows are satellites and they not only take images but they have all kinds of other sensor data on that thing ok and guess what. Not one w m ds site was found in iraq since 1991 the specialists of alex running espionage the n. S. A. The National Security agency cannot find anything. William binney former technical director of the n. S. A. Was among those scrutinizing iraq there was no information collected by n. S. A. That that indicated that he continued his weapons of mass Destruction Program or even that he had weapons of mass destruction. This was no surprise Saddam Husseins awesome had been destroyed after the gulf war. And. Before 911 american senior officials had publicly stated otherwise he is not about any significant capability to respect weapons or abstraction is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors were. We are able are not one not. One Saddam Husseins fate is decided the official tone changes and washington portrays him as an immediate threat. This is a regime that has something to hide from the civilized world. States like these and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil and bad but no terrorist state poses a greater or more immediate threat to the security of our people in the stability of the world than the regime of Saddam Hussein in iraq simply stated. There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. The existence of w m ds will have to be proven to help them the Bush Administration turns to im a child. In 1992 together with other opponents of Saddam Hussein in exile he formed the i n c the Iraqi National congress. All of them had a common interest in being ex exiles in that they wanted to take over the government and understood that the way they were going to do the act was by following a u. S. Army which was dispensing with the current government and with Saddam Hussein. Overlooked by bill clinton be allied himself with the president s political opponents the i. O. C. Managed to develop a clear and significant strategic relations with people in among the neocons and in the Republican Party at large and with some democrats also to get support for america to do something about saddam. In january 2001 approach unity presented itself for the iraqi exiles so when president bush came to power all those people who were advocating supporting us came to power with him. After 911. 00 the collusion between the iraqi exiles and the Bush Administration becomes cooperation. That american administration. So that specifically asked us to see if we can introduce them to people. Oh can provide information on the realities. China be complies enthusiastically he introduces the americans to iraqi defectors endless sources of revelations about Saddam Husseins deadly arsenal. The people in child his group wanted to get rid of saddam that so they were looking and searching in trying to come up with things that would help justify to us what our people wanted to hear that is we wanted to hear something about weapons of mass destruction so we could justify us going to war with them. A shrewd politician and strategist chalo be also introduces his defectors to the press and through their provocative headlines the journalists lend credibility to all the allegations against baghdad opinion in washington is divided and it was clear from the very beginning that major institutions in the United States such as the cia and a large part of the state department were opposed. To this they had no confidence in us they kept that criticizing us they kept calling us exaggerate a lie and as despite everything the pentagon refuses to question the revelations made by the exiles the idea that chalo b. Had information that he knew to be false and he presented it knowing it to be false is has never been established in any of the inquiries and there been many official inquiries into the activities of the intelligence activities before the war. But the skeptics must be countered and to give credence to the iraqi exiles the hawks at the pentagon create our own service the office of special plans an initiative by Paul Wolfowitz and Douglas Feith. The office of special plans this was quite a quite a mess monstrosity they were set up as an alternative cia. The cia gathers information from a multitude of sources in general its analysts check them before submitting their conclusions to the politicians but the office of special plans short circuits this process a 1st in the history of american intelligence in the end bush cheney and rumsfeld obtain the answers they need. George tenet director of the cia grudgingly supports the information before congress. I had one of those hearings the director of the cia george tenet brought with him 3 white folders where materials about the some 550 sites in iraq where allegedly there were weapons of mass destruction i asked tenet where did we get all this information and the answer is we got it from. The exiles who did we the United States of america have on the ground to see if in fact what was said in these exile provided information packets was accurate and the answer was 0. The exiles and the pentagon collaborate and transforming mere allegations into official policy. The collective effort by all those groups involved became a fabrication that became the policy of the United States and it was used to justify a war. Further information was provided by friendly nations. In rome a dossier from the Italian Military secret service sees me arrives at the american embassy. It eludes to a secret sale of uranium to iraq by may share. The German Secret Service offers its support as well. It provides the americans with revelations made by an iraqi defector code name curveball he claims baghdad is making biological weapons in its mobile abode its roots. Leadership up to date is. The war to liberate iraq whether for bush a crucial barrier remains to be overcome before he can go to war congress the american president must ask congress for the green light before launching the country into a war. In august and september the drumbeats of war in iraq started to get louder and louder and there were some indications that the president would soon be calling on congress for an authorization of war against iraq. A mere formality as bush holds the majority but bob graham will try to stall. This race too. And one of the questions was wed like to review the National Intelligence estimate on possible war with iraq and the answer was there isnt a National Intelligence estimate. What graham is asking for is a top secret document an estimate of what every Intelligence Agency knows about a particular threat. To be told that here we are about to go to war and no National Intelligence estimate has been done it was astounding and we asked that it be done what happened was they kept their heads way down you know it want to do an estimate on weapons of mass destruction in iraq because that honest the honest answer was there any. In london live comes to the aid of his friend bushs and publishes a dossier on the iraqi weapons. Intelligence picture they want to keep they can be deployed within 45 minutes and iraq is seeking uranium from africa to develop an atomic bomb but in Congress Graham is not convinced he presses on he wants proof the agency particularly the cia the Central Intelligence agency was very reluctant and said we dont have time to do this i said we dont have time to know everything we need to know before we commit u. S. Troops to combat tenet goes back to the white house and he says. Looks like the jig is up i will go have to do it estimate and the white house says ok mr tenet 2 things number one you have to do it and one and a half weeks usually an estimate takes 3 or 4 months and number 2 its got to come out exactly as Vice President dick cheney said it was. Tenet will once again due to the president s orders. Bob kerrey is a u. S. Senator and former navy seal. Well i think its a fair accusation to say that both president bush and Vice President cheney put pressure on the Intelligence Community to reach a conclusion that they had already reached Vice President cheney at one time went down and sat in cia did sat down at it in the chair next to the analyst looking at the data saying what do you have on weapons of mass destruction will and kind of puts the pressure on the intelligence agencies to come up with something. Ive been looking at your Instagram Account and reading the behind the scenes this is a dialogue when donald trump announce his candidacy for president everyone laughed at them everyone has a point is the best chance the democrats have to beat donald trump is to nominate an exciting inspirational callus maverick nominee joining the colobus compass a send in your thoughts to twitter and on down to 0. The alleged mastermind of the september 11th attacks in the u. S. U. S. Senators have failed to stop the sale of 8000000000. 00 worth of weapons to saudi arabia they couldnt reach the 2 thirds majority needed to override donald trump speeches of previous lost pos by Congress Politicians opposed to the sales fear the weapons could be used against civilians in the war. There are 13 People Killed after airstrikes hit a busy markets in Northern Province the run media has blamed the saudi amorality coalition for launching the strikes but the Coalition Says the move the stage the attack at least 57 inmates have died in a prison riot in brazils parra state 16 of them were beheaded in the violence between rival gangs that lasted for 5 hours least 17 people have been killed after a small Pakistani Military plane crashed into a residential area and rubble pindi 12 civilians are among the dead 5 others are crew members. Congress a resolution authorizing the war is put to the vote the cia finally presents its estimate on iraq classified as top secret it is not until 2015 that the estimate is made available to the public it is in a state or text 95 pages long the dissect Saddam Husseins weapons of mass Destruction Program most notably however the estimate is exceedingly cautious citing doubts and conflicting opinions coming from the core of the Intelligence Community. To keep these drugs from being taken into account the white house symbol taney asli publishes a shortened version of the estimate on iraq 25 pages embellished with color photographs and maps. They had a very clever sanitized version of the estimate which. If a sentence said we think it possible that Saddam Hussein had this then take out the possible this version makes official the allegations that have been circulating for months baghdad has chemical and biological weapons as well as missiles saddam could get his hands on a Nuclear Weapon within a year the Sales Campaign that took place i would characterize as aggressive deception theres no question that the headlines leave a different impression of whats in the document itself the october 2002 and i e is not conclusive. It is the headlines that will sway congress bob graham knows this he votes against the resolution to go to war. By taking that action according to our own Intelligence Reports i will tell you friends and i would encourage you. To read they classified Intelligence Reports which are much sharper than what is available in the classified form we are going to be increased the threat level against the people of the United States i found the document to be a very unpersuasive and it was a significant part of my ultimate decision to vote against the war in iraq. October 10th 2002 that. Congress approves the war right roll touring the course of history 4 out of jackson. The deception is successful. American officials bear the responsibility of having allowed questionable evidence to dictate their decision and this for political gains this vote was going to be taken in october of 2002 just a month before the november election so there were a lot of people who felt that from a political standpoint. They didnt really want to know too much because they wanted to be able to tell their constituents this is what the president said was the right thing i accepted his judgment the vote by congress is a resulting victory for the Bush Administration. And the iraqi exiles and it leaves the antiwar proponents with a bitter taste of defeat. Really. With a vote of Congress Security it is no time to rally public support to do so they have a dossier on hand. Remember that dossier from rome the one that conveniently emerged from the archives from the Italian Military secret service sees me. And so bianco former minister of the interior has closely followed the extraordinary story of this dossier chaired a local made the ball look at the u. S. C. It called on a limb introduced the police women in it left brazen enough at that it. A key but they will to be savvy. That food soldier is local martino a long time sees me agent informer to french british and American Secret Services he is the one who circulated the seemingly explosive dossier among his socalled clients. This is it it contains official looking documents that allude to a sale by me zhao to iraq of concentrated you rhenium or yellowcake. The yellowcake dossier he finally lands on the desk of Vice President cheney in february 2002. When dick cheney saw this report from the defense Intelligence Agency about yellowcake iraqis seeking yellowcake in Darkest Africa and asia where. He asked the cia briefer or you think about this this year briefer said well ill check it out and to verify it the cia summons joe wilson on february the 19th 2002 wilson is familiar with the 4th largest uranium producer in the world he was posted there earlier in his career when i got there the 1st person i went to see was a u. S. Ambassador and she said to me we have already looked at this. And we have determined that there is nothing there will some returns to the United States and gives his report to the cia the amount of uranium that was being talked about represented about a 25 percent increase in annual protection levels and any such increase would have had to been approved through the consortium that ran the mine you could not hide that. Wilsons conclusions are related to cheney who ignores the Vice President is sticking to his dossier from italy. And yet the italians gave the americans fair. Are warning the documents in the sherry and yellow cake are false. And zubin young co has been demanding a commission of inquiry for years. If i took it to seal it in opposed to the 80 that up but then into the visit of e. C. Kists has come to that then tally cases come down to. A question format so that no no no course and if it say negative at. The event that you get the one the. Family the anything in it will davids out that the costs read it theyll be better at them in that phallus save for the maturity to not respond or not elaine that is the last battle that is to be in that case ducts suspicions that the program or camp will ignore for them the yellowcake dossier is a godsend it fuels a fundamental fear that of a Nuclear Apocalypse the only weapon of mass destruction that truly. Is a weapon of mass destruction is a Nuclear Weapon chemical weapons and biological weapons are battlefield weapons but a Nuclear Weapon and as a society altering weapon. Fear of the iraqi people reaches its pinnacle in september 2002 the New York Times publishes a headline about the threat from baghdad it eludes to aluminum tube was seized by the americans that were to be used in the production of centrifuges to enrich uranium from africa and finally to make an atomic bomb it all adds up. At the end of 2002 the Media Campaign in the United States works like a charm according to the polls almost 80 percent of americans believe saddam has an atomic bomb or is close to having them in the end the yellowcake dossier will have a remarkable fate president bush himself will get behind it the British Government has learned the Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from africa pronounced by the most powerful man in the world this little sentence is an unequivocal condemnation and yet bush had been warned when the president when the state of the Union Address was being fair the cia told the white house you cannot use this code. Laim that saddam attempted to purchase uranium from. There. To proceed to despite of the cias reluctance the white house attributes these revelations to the british who spoke of yellowcake in their september report. With respect to iraqs attempt to acquire Nuclear Material in the. The. The British Intelligence official the head of British Intelligence at the time to this day insists that that information was correct and no one can say with certainty that it isnt it isnt true in fact the british white paper was simply circular reporting it was our story that ended up in a british document it was the same story. The french government which essentially controls the exploitation of the rayney of mines looked into the yellowcake affair and concluded it was fraudulent. Dilla subir was the diplomatic advisor to french president Jacques Chirac at the time said i felt a little kid you know wanted a cool extra point home hes expected. To do i feel much oily you know that. I dont fully understand us you want us to show each to pretty under to some of the recommend. Extra. 20 early 2003 the American Government decides to present its case to world leaders. Colin powell who stands before the u. N. To deliver a scathing indictment of Saddam Hussein he repeats the accusations already presented during debates before congress he stresses the existence of mobile laboratories for producing biological weapons these are the revelations made by curveball the iraqi defector who spoke to german intelligence. Finally he accuses saddam of wanting to get his hands on an atomic bomb and he speaks of the r. U. Minium tubes that for months have been presented as a refutable proof. We watched colin powell and we said whoa this is really theatrical well done and we gave him an a for presentation and a c. Minus for content which would. Be. It would. Be. Just under 6 hour request a day or more policeman the vile that. General powell put in nations with the head of the cia behind him was acquired from a man which they named curveball. Curveball whose real name was rough feed comment was a knobby would later admit that he made it all up so he could stay home germany. Richard powell had superficially defended the idea of going to war has no problem admitting that many of powers allegations were unfounded the mobile laboratories that were described in that Intelligence Report that turned out to be completely false there were no mobile laboratories the aluminum tubes which could have been part of centrifuges turned out to be aluminum tubes for launching small small rockets colin powell now is like yeah he did. Why dont you do it because the president told me though it taking their case to the u. N. The american seek to justify their actions in front of the International Community weapons inspectors return to iraq but have yet to find w m ds but washington applies an indisputable logic. Hussein in the case that he has weapons of mass destruction that is valid in United Nations resolutions then we will know that Saddam Hussein again to see of the world if he says he doesnt have any and i think that we will find out whether or not Saddam Hussein is saying some of the we believe will be verifiably false. Fronts wages one last diplomatic battle. On february the 14th at the u. N. Domenic to fill pan states the french position these are still a force. You know even again and on march 7th director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed El Baradei i denounces bushs claims about the yellowcake from africa pale dont try to analyse die you have to conclude. With the concurrence of outside experts that means documents which form the basis for the reports of release and you donate the iranian transaction between iraq and the shares are in fact not authentic we have therefore conclude that the least specific allegations are unfounded. Well we know its a forgery now and we know that our country suffered the indignity of the. Director saying before the u. N. Security council it took us a day and a half our experts but we looked and internet and really looked elsewhere we hired experts and we found out that zs documents were not authentic. In paris. Announces that he will veto any resolution in favor of war. Related like it it was all appeal decision the americans will ignore the advice of shit like the conclusions of battle die and the opinion of the us. The night of march 19th the war begins 3 weeks later columns of american tanks rolled into baghdad Saddam Hussein flees. From the outset of the operation in iraq american soldiers search for Saddam Husseins awesome they find nothing the politicians blame it on the Intelligence Community you know intelligence agencies frequently make mistakes intelligence organizations by their very nature are working with imperfect information with conflicting accounts with things that its impossible to to interpret with a high degree of certainty the cia which had been so suspicious of the collaboration between the exiles and the pentagon will be forced to take the blame notably for the most blatant lies that little sentence 16 words in all spoken by bush about the african yellowcake and the documents that inspired it no one knew at the time in articles maybe someone knew down in the bow for the agency but no one in our circles knew. That there were doubts and suspicions that this might be a forgery this insistence on defending the official lie finally gets the better of joe wilsons discretion. It was at that time that i fully understood that the government was not going to do it their it that it lied to the American People and therefore i had to write the story myself. In the New York Times he publishes the truth about his mission tunisia and the fact of the white house was well aware of his conclusions. Given the structure of the consortium that operated the mine it would be exceedingly difficult for niger to transfer uranium to iraq. The cia must once again shoulder responsibility and george tenet releases a statement. The 16 words should have never been included in the text written for the president this was a mistake a small price to pay for a very lethal lie at the white house the issue becomes a subject of humor official inquiries will denounce the incompetence of the Intelligence Community for the erroneous information about Saddam Husseins weapons of mass destruction this was fraud and i cant say that often enough no mistake fraud. The man who was complicit in this deception refuses to be held soley responsible. The to believe that an exile organization with limited means can fool a major superpower the only superpower in the world of a time. With with bill tens of billions of dollars on sophisticated intelligence gathering into war against saddam. This is fiction. It will be 3 years before bush admits that saddam did not have w m ds. The main reason we went into iraq at the time was we thought he had weapons of mass destruction turns out he didnt but he had the capacity to make weapons of mass but also talked about the human suffering interact. Bush brushes aside the stated reason for a war that has destroyed an entire country. In iraq the invasion turns into a bloody occupation. The downward spiral. Started with the occupation the coalition specially the americans lost the moral high ground and they became the jailers of that if people the bedlam the chaos the violence in iraq now its a natural consequence of what bush and cheney did in invading iraq. Iraq is quickly torn to shreds ripped apart by religious and ethnic violence. I think the most convincing argument was that in order to enhance israels position in the middle east and its security the nation surrounding it that formed an anti israel a bloc had to be broken up into smaller confessional a homo genius nation states so in the case of iraq a kurdistan a shia sanin a sunni stan. This objective was openly declared as early as 996 in this document. Signed by Richard Perle and Douglas Feith a text that accuses iraq of posing a threat to israel. Today the chaos in iraq has spread into syria entire provinces are beyond the control of baghdad and damascus. And the west has a new enemy the Islamic State of iraq and the levant isis also known as dice the United States bears considerable responsibility for the fact that the Islamic State exists. But not because the United States intended to create the Islamic State rather that the Islamic State came into existence as an unintended consequence of this immensely foolish war the americans and the british had they not occupy the country have had they cut of corruption when it started we would not have that the violence has claimed hundreds of thousands of victims day to many and is up rooted 1000000 innocent iraqis and 7 in the us you have hundreds of thousands of refugees leaving the area and nobody asks nobody asked what caused this what caused this terrible human catastrophe it was an earthquake it was a typhoon it was an invasion of a country that was reasonably intact when we invaded. The iraqi deception has cost americans almost 2. 00 trillion dollars according to some estimates. Much of this public money has been directed to the Defense Industry. Peace is bad for business war tension is always very good for business so money of course was a major factor so the United States finds itself today essentially engaged in permanent war. In as a permanent ward that that benefits some people there are some people and some entities that are making a lot of money. From this endless war. Profits rarely mentioned relegated to silence as all the americans who have died in iraq like the son of andrew bass of age killed may 13th 2007 i think one of the saddest aspects of our iraq war is how quickly americans have chosen to forget it. There seems to be an unwillingness on the part of the American People to acknowledge and to confront this enormous failure. Will aggressive deception is totally incompatible with the fundamental principle of democracy a failure the result of a manipulation that has shaken the confidence of americans in their own institutions. The man who wanted to see the end of Saddam Hussein did not want to see the end of iraq and he was sidelined 11 sort of president bush told me if you oppose the policies of president bush we will bring the full weight of the nie states to bear against you i know that theyre not as are going to target me. That there was a there is a and a finding of the national Security Council signed by president bush and april of 2004 and titled marginalise chalo. 10 hours after this interview. He was found dead in his bed. And autopsy concluded it was a heart attack. Saddam hussein arrested and judged is hung december 30th 2006 george bush is reelected in november 2004 Richard Cheney remains Vice President colin powell leaves office in january 2005 conda lisa rice replaces him at the state department george tenet resigns in july 2004 citing personal reasons Douglas Pfeiffer resigns from the pentagon in january 2005 Paul Wolfowitz is appointed president of the world bank in june 2005 Donald Rumsfeld leaves the pentagon in november 2006. Richard powell divides his time between washington and the suffer from this.
