Confront police also had 3 front corner virus continues to grow report on doctors struggling to make it into the amazon for testing and. One year a. New era for space travel is to nasa astronauts blast off on their mission to the International Space station. And Richelle Carey this is aljazeera bringing you special coverage of the unrest in the United States of the death of an unarmed black man in minneapolis for a 4th day there have been violent protests across the country from new york to los angeles night has fallen across the country and curfews are being enforced in more than a dozen cities. Atlanta portland and among those restricting movement to try to curb more of the. In minneapolis people are again defying orders and continuing to make their voices heard on the streets the states governor has fully mobilized the National Guard for the 1st time in minnesotas history but he says he still doesnt happen after troops while says also called on people to do their part to stop the violence scuffles have broken out between police and protesters in new york were demonstrations are continuing into the night at least 2 police cars have been set on fire and thousands of people demonstrated outside the citys Supreme Court on the Brooklyn Bridge and outside a sports arena police cars also set on fire in miami what was initially a peaceful protests turned violent officers responded with tear gas and fireworks a curfew has been in place there for just over an hour well be live with robert oulds and los angles and just a moment 1st lets go to john hendren who is live in minneapolis obviously were were all of this started so the curfew has been on in force for a few hours now john what are you seeing. This is what a curfew is supposed to look like youve got quiet streets not a lot of people out although youre seeing a few cars here. But it was a far cry from this just an hour or 2 ago that was when thousands of protesters gathered just about 2 blocks down there and police came in huge force and they were firing tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd they quickly and rather easily took over that area in more arjen numbers we got a whiff of that tear gas as we were running away during our live shot 2 hours ago. But the police have taken that area over there are still protesters out over the town but they are no longer in the same regions so theyre finding other places but theyre still upset over the fact that only one of those 4 officers who kneeled on the back of george floyd have been arrested and charged that officer was charged with murder and manslaughter but people here want to charge against the other officers and theyre also just simply upset that these events continue to happen. So yeah well out of that has it seems that for the past 24 hours when the governor and the mayor talked they were trying to deal with the immediacy of the protests has there been any indication about where things stand with this investigation and to the other officers john what do we know about the officer Darvish Yvonne who actually has been arrested. Well very little we know that there had been instances where he had been accused of Excessive Force in the past and we know that. You know pretty much just what weve seen on the video but he was taken into custody on friday he was arrested charged with manslaughter and 1st degree murder and thats about all we know about him at this time but this is of course motivated these protests all over the country rob well tell you about the one in l. A. I know theres one going on in chicago as well but this one is about is confrontational and violent as i have seen many fires have been set all over the city there has been looting if we can just turn the camera over to the walgreens across the street you can see the windows have been knocked out and people are hanging out but theres really nothing left in there because its been all looted out and meanwhile youve had these clashes the continue between police and demonstrators theyve been firing these rubber projectiles and this is going to continue people here in the streets day until those other officers are charged and this is what this was all sparked by what happened to george floyd but theres a history in various cities across the u. S. Of this happening time and time again in minnesota in particular there was the killing of philander castiel a black man a few years ago who was shot and killed by a Police Officer and that Police Officer was found not guilty so this has been simmering across the country but also specifically in the state of minnesota john. Thats right minnesota does have a history of this kind of racial tension but as you point out its happened in state after state Trayvon Martin in florida Michael Brown in missouri and in in the state of illinois there was the shooting of mcdonald who was holding and i. But walking away from police was shot 16 times in the back and that case is the exception in that case the Police OfficerJason Van Dyke was serving is now serving a prison term for murder because of that thats a rare instance of a Police Officer going to prison and having covered that trial i will tell you that it was calm in chicago after that happened there were some protests beforehand but the crowds did respond afterwards whether that will happen here we simply dont know and of course we dont know if those are those who dede will be charged thats a great point you make john bad there were a lot of protests about that as the investigation progress as people are trying to get information out there there was a lot of resistance on the part of the mayor and the Police Unions but you have to wonder perhaps there was a guilty verdict because they people and chicago protesters and sisted audit that that sort of seems what the role of protests about the protests are and and to be honest this video that we saw a george floyd is what led to the protests that you can also almost be certain thats probably will lead to the charges john is that there were these protests this people saw it for themselves. Thats true 1st of all you had the officer charged and indeed imprisoned in 4 days thats almost unheard of the prosecutor said it was the 1st time hed ever prosecuted a Police Officer that quickly and i have no doubt in my mind the fact that the governor and the mayor of the town had both called for action was what resulted in that quick action there was a press conference the day before in which a lot of us thought that criminal charges were going to be announced but they werent one suspects because they simply couldnt finish the investigation in time but they held a News Conference anyway and when people heard that there were no criminal charges because streets went wild people were upset and angry about that and then on friday when he when the 1st officer was charged. There was a sense of relief it was a bit of a festive atmosphere but it simply wasnt enough and then later on in the night things turned more violent and you had buildings burned in confrontations with police and then thats again what you had tonight ok john hendren with the latest there and chicago john thank you very much ok lets go a little further west to los angeles where our problem is why there are so rob a curfew in los angeles as well. Yes thats right richelle a curfew has been in effect for a little over an hour now across the city but that this does not seem to have abated the protests or the Violence Associated with them in fact the protests seem to be spreading they were earlier concentrated in an area of West Los Angeles now there are protests going off in downtown l. A. We recently saw a line of maybe 100 Police Vehicles racing to Downtown Los Angeles to respond to that the mayor of the city Eric Garcetti has asked the governor of california to send in the National Guard and there are reports that the guard will be deployed by midnight thats about 3 hours from now local time arrests are being made weve seen video of the long lines of people with those plastic zip tie handcuffs being herded on to buses in in west l. A. And theres a huge fire burning at the quarter of melrose and fairfax going up through the roof of a building that we havent actually been able to identify yet. The mayor says anyone caught out on the streets breaking curfew is subject to arrest. And the. The Authorities Say this is no longer a matter of protest its simply destruction the city of los angeles has been through this before. Obviously not to the scale of the 92 l. A. Riots but they have been here before with with protesters saying enough what there being no consequences for for black men being abused by police talk about how even all these 20 something years later the wounds are probably still fresh for people and an l. A. Well the city has changed the methods of policing have have changed and various Police Commissioners and chiefs have tried very hard to. Deescalate the confrontational. Tone between the citizens of the city particularly lock and brown citizens and the Police Department but yes there are still scars from the 1992 riots after the rodney king beating there are still people who remember that very well and it is for them evidence that crimes by the police. Or at least alleged crimes can be can go on punish theres another example from 2009 in the city of Oakland Oscar grant a young man was in a. In a mass transit facility he was approached by police handcuffed put on the ground and then shot in the back the officer was actually tried in that case he got 2 years for manslaughter but oscar grant was dead. Yeah and that was also that confrontation was caught on video as well. Yeah its good to remind people of that rob reynolds rob thank you very much live for us in los angeles and they are citys mayor bill de blasio who has issued a warning to the small number of rioters among the peaceful protesters. If you went out peacefully to make a point about the need for change you have been heard and change is coming in the city i have no doubt about that its time to go home so we can all move forward but those who are out there simply to create violence those who are out there to express hatred towards our Police Officers we wont tolerate that if youre out there to commit an act of violence youre going to get arrested tonight carol is on there is in new york he sent us this update. I slated groups of. Protesters are still kind of going around the streets a little bit but for the most part what are were seeing now is the after effects of some of the ugly side of the protests that we saw the vast majority were peaceful but here in Union Square Area of new york city in the last hour to 2 hours it got quite chaotic actually theres still. Some groups of protesters up the street there police have the street blocked off. I guess you can describe it as somewhat of a tense calm at this hour. Then over there that was set on fire theres about 3 Police Vehicles that were set up blaze this evening and then if you follow me over here i can just give you an idea of the anger that so many people have. This is 2 of the police vans they were vandalized here. Again and what youre looking at is a manifestation of anger and frustration by some of the protesters who say theyve just simply had enough and that what youre seeing here is theyre saying that this is gone beyond minneapolis minnesota and george floyd that this is now Gone National but in new york city this evening definitely we saw intense protests throughout the afternoon in Brooklyn New York city and elsewhere but ultimately ended with some ugly scenes here in union square we all saw any gallagher and miami with the latest situation there. We saw what d started as Peaceful Demonstrations become Something Else entirely in downtown miami protesters surrounded the main Police Station there was a car was set on fire the i 95 the main highway that runs up the east coast of florida and was partially closed for some time because the protesters moved up onto the highway walking in between the cars there is a very real history here in the state of florida particularly with the case of Trayvon Martin who was gunned down by George Zimmerman a selfappointed Neighborhood Watch captain that happened 8 years ago it was a case i covered from the very start and it was a case in which George Zimmerman was found not guilty by a jury that still resonates with the Africanamerican Community here the pain is still very real or remember the Trayvon Martin case is what started what kicked off the black lives Matter Movement but what weve seen here in florida all across the state small groups of protesters just a few 100 here and theyre not the numbers were seeing in new york and certainly not like it is in minneapolis but nevertheless that fear that anger that sense of injustice is really boiling over here as it is in the rest of the country the protests now in downtown miami seem to have dispersed im hearing reports that protesters turned up at the house of the Police Officer who had knee on the neck of the man in minneapolis for 9 minutes he apparently had a 2nd home here so the police are also there as well still no word from Rhonda Santas this states governor a close ally of President Trump he hasnt made any Public Comments at all of the moment but this state in this county now under curfew will have to see what the next few days and hours bring. As president ill chime pass of course tweeted to get his reaction to the protests have bent out with in minneapolis he tweeted the National Guard has been released in minneapolis to do the job that they need to macwrite mayor couldnt do shit about news 2 days ago and there would not have been damage and Police Headquarters to not have been taken over and ruined a great job by the nash. Ard no games exclamation point he also threatened on twitter to unleash the u. S. Military on the protesters that is a power he does not have even as president and the mayor of chicago had earlier criticized trumps handling of the protest accusing him of using the unrest for his own political ends. His goal is to polarize to destabilize local government and inflames racist urges and we can absolutely not let him prevail. And i will code what i really want to say to donald trump its 2 words it begins with f. It ends with you. I will not remain silent while this man cynically tries to turn this incredibly painful moment into one for his own political be. Democratic president ial hopeful joe biden has also weighed in on the protest tweeting if we are complacent if we are silent we are complicit in perpetuating the cycles of violence not of us can turn away we all have an obligation to speak outs as a clemente is a Community Organizer and representing black lives matter of thats a group formed after the death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin and for that she says people are at a breaking point. Every 28 hours in the United States of america an African American native person south asian person or brown person let the you know are killed by the police every 28 hours george floyd unfortunately was something we have to watch for 9 minutes but we could talk about Briana Taylor and teen who was working during the Global Pandemic where police entered her house while her and her boyfriend were sleep they thought they were being rot and her body was so riddled with bullets and this is last month in louisville kentucky that they had a hard time even putting her back together i can name you. Tony make day a black trans man that was just killed 2 days ago by the police in men says and i could spend 5 hours with you all and i could not even answer or we wouldnt even vote to the lists of multiple Police Killings this is a not only a Tipping Point its an explosion and within against this Global Pandemic until all those cops are respite until they go to trial until they get jail time and then serve that jail time i think were going to be seeing this a lot more for many many weeks here in the United States and lets go now to Chicago Illinois where arnold tossing a name as as far. For the 2nd time in less than 24 hours the protests here in chicago have been quite rowdy overnight more than 100 people were arrested a dozen Police Officers were injured and then mid afternoon today protesters gathered again near the Federal Building they began marching the group splin
