Outcome of the election now hinges on 4 battleground states where many also votes are being tallied and in other news the u. N. Calls for an immediate deescalation intentions as ethiopias Prime Minister it was in troops following an attack on a military base in the tikrit reach. So we begin in the United States where joe biden is pulling ahead in the race for the white house we cannot project a win for biden in the key battleground state of michigan its one of the socalled rust belt states that donald trump won in 2016 helping deliver him the presidency within the past couple of hours the democrats also flipped neighboring wisconsin which donald trump won 4 years ago now ali and that means that biden now has a toll of 264 Electoral College votes one donald trump has 214 remember the magic number to become president is of course 278 in yellow you will see the states that are still in play georgia and North Carolina in the south nevada in the west and pennsylvania in the northeast Donald Trumps demanding a recount in wisconsin which has gone to biden after a very. Race and theres now less than one percent between them were still waiting on pennsylvania the states where joe biden was born of course donald trump is still in the lead there d but the remaining mail in ballots are mostly from the democratic leaning cities of philadelphia and pittsburgh and the suburbs giving biden a good chance to catch up trump as father lawsuit here to calling for an end to the counting of mail in ballots in pennsylvania North Carolina meanwhile is one of several states where trump has claimed victory but the results there is still too close to call and then mail in ballots postmarked by election day are accepted until november 12th georgia now and no results from further south in georgia Donald Trumps initial lead has been steadily falling most of the remaining votes are from atlanta and its suburbs which lean democratic of the 5 remaining states biden would only need to cling on to nevada to claim victory if you know 6 Electoral College votes which will take biden to 264 from 264 other to the magic number of 270 he is now really leading in nevada with 86 percent of the votes tallied so far. And so once more this is a sate of the race right now joe biden with 264 election College Votes so far just a few away from the 270 needed for victory and bet biden is urging his supporters to be patient and fisting his on track for victory shortly well get the latest from our team of correspondents on the ground but for us his political hay in wrapping up the developments so far. Former Vice President joe biden projecting confidence he will be the next president and he may have taken a step closer to the Associated Press declaring hes won the state of wisconsin giving him 10 more Electoral College votes and an easier path to the 272 that will get him to the white house and now after a long night of county its clear that were one you know states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency im not here to clear that weve won but i am here to report the count is finished we believe we will be the winners. But u. S. President donald trump is demanding a recount in wisconsin after falling short by around 20000 votes even his most ardent supporters doubt that will change anything former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker tweeting out a recount in 2016 trumps numbers went up by 131 and the counting continues in the states that will decide the election with state officials asking for patience give the Public Servants the opportunity to do their job and what i will tell you is that karen pennsylvania were going to follow the law and we will respect the will of the people and the crop per victor will be certified based on who got more votes the president is suing to stop the counting in some states and asking the Supreme Court to intervene complaining on twitter theyre finding biden votes all over the place in pennsylvania wisconsin and michigan so bad for country to be clear theyre not finding ballots but counting ones that come in on time according to state laws and there is a question about whether the Postal Service run by a trump loyalist interfered in getting ballots delivered on time define a federal judges order tuesday to do a sweep for ballots they refused potentially leaving hundreds of thousands not counted the one thing this election has clearly shown america is a nation divided it really does seem like people live in 2 different realities given like the news they consume and with a surround themselves with so i i not bad surprise that a lot of people decided to vote again for a president who has brought us so where we are with several cases winding their way through the courts as the votes are counted and america and the world waits to see who eked out a win in this fractured country. Aljazeera. Well we have correspondents in over places that matter natasha code name is standing by in wisconsin mike hanna is covering job im scam pain from his home state of delaware john hendren is in michigan but 1st we go to our White House Correspondent Kimberly Hockett in washington d. C. Kimberly. Biden is taking the lead now getting closer to 270. 00 by the campaign not conceding and they filed another lawsuit. Thats right the Term Campaign has filed lawsuits not just in wisconsin but also in michigan and the u. S. President even as the tally in pennsylvania continues is claiming victory there he says that hes claiming victory in pennsylvania georgia and North Carolina edition he also says michigan and then hes also alleging that there were a large number of secretly dumped ballots that he says in twitter have been widely reported now this 2nd part of his tweet that he sent out in the last couple of hours has been flagged by twitter as being potentially misleading but this is what a lot of the Trump Supporters believe and this is why theyre asking for recounts in fact this is what the trunk campaign really delivered in terms of a message from philadelphia in the state of pennsylvania earlier what their fear is is that many of their observers they say in states like michigan were not allowed to watch the tally and process and they fear there has been manipulation of that tally how many votes we have to be. 400000 is not enough with 80 plus percent counted i think theres only 14 percent of the vote to go if you think were stupid you think were family you know something the democrats do think youre stupid and they do think you fools mesh well you get called deplorable and. Drove. Were going to stick with this were going to win this election weve actually won it just a matter of counting the votes fairly now as the vote counting continues in states like pennsylvania the divisions are deepening in the United States on both sides we saw as we came into work today that there were posters around black lives matter plaza saying take to the streets stop trump from stealing this election americans glued to their mobile phones watching as these tallies continue to come in but its safe to say that 50 percent of the United States is unlikely to be happy with what ever result is finally made official in the 2020 president ial election joe biden again believing that he will ultimately be victorious but well find out that he will soon have to assume a role if he does become president elect of being the healer in chief given the fact that so Many Americans may not accept the result could be in washington lets go to john hendren in lansing michigan now john the campaign had filed a lawsuit to hold the vote count in michigan too but michigan has been called for joe biden will this be the final outcome of the race there. Well and sued may be a moot point at this time and thats because the troubled ministration sued to stop the voting so that their observers could come in and watch the vote they said they didnt have adequate access there you attorney general of michigans that in fact they did have adequate access and did have poll observers in detroit some of them today were so disruptive that police were called in but ultimately with 97 percent of the vote in and counted joe biden is 1. 2 Percentage Points ahead thats a significant amount and its more than 60000 votes how significant is that well in 2016. Hillary clinton lost 510000 votes this is more than 6 times that she did not challenge the election but the Green Party Candidate did in the state of michigan said that she did not have standing to carry out that challenge it would be an uphill battle for the president to do that now he started in 2016 saying that he was going to build a wall but it looks like its actually joe biden who is building that blue wall of democratic states back one state at a Time Starting with wisconsin adding michigan and he hopes to add pennsylvania to that still john hendren in lansing michigan thank you lets not go to my can i hope covering the Biden Campaign for us from home state of delaware mike is in wilmington we heard joe biden of course calling for everyone to be patient calling for calm but the republicans are anything but calm right now mike theyre being pretty combative now that you know we have biden in the lead easy going to be is the democratic camp going to be changing its strategy given the way the republicans are reacting to these results. Well the binding campaign here and democrats throughout these contested states have been actively opposing the republican legal actions normally it is being on a state basis sometimes on a county basis but democratic representatives have been actively opposing a number of these republican legal moves now a number of judges in a number of cases have already thrown out the republican requests now in one example for example clark county nevada there the Republican Campaign brought an injunction to stop the counting of votes the judge in clark county threw out the instruction quoting the Supreme Courts instruction that in nevada votes can be counted up until november the 10th if they are postmarked on or before november the 3rd the results have to be released by november the 16th so that our Legal Process is underway being counted by democratic suppose the campaign and individual democratic committees in particular areas but above all this is a very important point the campaign has threatened to take this to the Supreme Court now thats a very difficult process and not one that happens automatically in the famous bush vs court case back in 2000 for example that took weeks before the Supreme Court took up that case and that only followed legal action within the florida Supreme Court so this just doesnt happen automatically and then theres one last point which is critical to all of this and that is that courts relied very heavily on what is called the reliance interest now that is a legal term which assumes that voters for example who have followed instructions they believe to be lawfully given are protected now the Supreme Court in particular has referred to this a number of times and it certainly does protect the reliance interest as a very important factor as long as the voter operated in a way that they believed to be legal and that they were advised to operate in that. On a legal basis so basically the Trump Campaign facing an uphill struggle here to try and invoke the Supreme Court and but also an uphill struggle to persuade individual judges or individual courts an individual error is to take up the d cases so its a very strong struggle but the democrats are country at every turn and it would appear as well that joe biden himself has taken a position that hes not going to get involved in the legal mind you shove that hes leaving it to the Campaign Committee to individual democratic committees in various parts of the country what hes arguing very strongly is that what is essential is that the constitution must be upheld he made reference in his speech in the last few hours to we the people we the people we the people emphasizing that what is the Legal Framework within which this process takes place ultimately is not those of institutions is not those of lawyers of legal actions its within the framework of a constitution which he pledges to continue to uphold and this is a very telling argument to many observers my kana in wilmington delaware thank you and now over to tasha good name who is in Madison Wisconsin where theres been a comeback in wisconsin natasha for the Democratic Party have done really well there but the president asking for a recount there as well. This might get a comeback story of the Democratic Party here in the state of wisconsin brought a rally at the capitol and people here are saying theyre here because this isnt over theyre standing for democracy and they say they will not leave until every vote is counted in the United States it was a good day for democrats in the state of wisconsin bitin flipped the state 520000 vote edge to the head of trauma as absentee ballots were counted in the cities of milwaukee green bay and had no shot. It 2016 truck one wisconsins 10 Electoral College votes by less than 23000 votes earning him the distinction of being the 1st republican president ial candidate to win in the state in more than 30 years that was clearly something the democrats did not want to have a repeat of it was a bruising loss for them so in the intervening years they dumped a lot of money into the state Biden Campaigned heavily here so did trump reacting to the news today of bidens win in the state of the state Democratic Party chairman said that quote leaned in personally voters rejected and rose against Voter Suppression and quote organizers worth their magic now the Trump Campaign manager has said they will ask for a recount here and wisconsin the manager said that without any evidence without citing any specific examples that there have been reports of voter irregularities in several counties in wisconsin he also said that quote public polling was a kind of Voter Suppression tactic now with regards to that. In the state of wisconsin candidates if the margin is less than one percent between the 2 candidates you do have the right to request a recount in this case trump would have to finance that recount unless the margin ended up being less than a quarter of one percent wisconsin like many other states had legal challenges coming into election day with regard to absentee ballots a Supreme Court ruled that was constant could not continue to count absentee ballots through november 6th even if they were postmarked on election day and the reason the state had planned to do that was because of the pandemic because there have been real mail shortage. Real mail delays in the state of wisconsin in any event as the state braces for a possible recount its worth noting that trump when he won the state in 2016 he won it by less than one percent. Name in Madison Wisconsin. The a. Reminder that youre watching ology there is extended coverage of the u. S. Elections the democratic nominee joe biden is pulling ahead in the race for the white house is now in the state of michigan giving him 264 Electoral College votes just 6 shy of the 270 if that is why it has to be most treasured and biden said he was confident of securing enough state to win the white house by the campaign has filed lawsuits to stop vote counting in places like michigan and pennsylvania while calling for a recount in wisconsin and its also looking to intervene in a Supreme Court case to stop pennsylvania counting votes up to 3 days after the election and the count of absentee ballots continues in bound ground states like pennsylvania and georgia arizona as well its a tight race in nevada where biden has a narrow lead with 86 percent of the votes tallied so far and this is how those results look right now on the map with wisconsin and michigan now turning blue to say still in play are in yellow georgia North Carolina nevada and pennsylvania joe biden once again just needs 6 Electoral College votes to win the white house lets bring in Michael Fauntroy who is an associate professor of Political Science at Howard University joining us via skype from washington d. C. Professor fun try very good to have you with us what is 1st of all your reaction and the way you see the current state of the race we have michigan going to biden but the Charm Campaign is lawyer ing up wanting to take this all the way to the Supreme Court. Anything for a very long battle. I think ultimately the battle wont be as long as it has been proportioned to be and thats because when you look at the last few states to come in pennsylvania michigan and wisconsin those states came in the way that they did in large measure because the yet to be counted vote came from democratic strongholds so it stands to reason that joe biden won overtake or could overtake President Trump in those states and by the way its not over its impossible though that likely but its possible that joe biden could end up winning georgia which in addition to some combination of arizona and nevada would make the make the spread even larger in terms of her own. Right and everyone of course you know when we hear. Lawsuits and we we hear demands for a recount and so on you cant help but think about florida in 2000 and theres a general conception that the republicans stand out noya the democrats do you think the democrats have known from the experience of 2000 and will perhaps be more aggressive in their strategy going forward. You know one of the major criticisms on 2000 was that al gore didnt come out quickly enough to stake a claim to the presidency and the margin of victory in 2000 was so much more of them had is now last night when vice former Vice President biden came out and spoke and then spoke again today he did 2 things one he sent a message to the country that he was going to continue to proceed as if he won or the other part of it was more sort of strategic and legal and that he is not going to to stand on the sidelines and let things sort of evolve on their own as what happened in 2000 so my expectation is the democrat lord and all of the states in question are going to be very aggressive in protecting his position. And present trump has had a pretty controversial turn hes been a pretty controversial president all the polls was somewhat on experts mainly were predicting a landslide for biden because of the coronavirus pandemic because of the way the president handled the crisis but we havent seen that landslide we havent seen that new wave that everyone talked about why is that think. Well i think there was some irrational exuberance among sort of people who saw the polls and thought that it was going to be a lie a slob of those of us who watch this closely and carefully knew that it was going to be pretty close now i dont think imma start would be as close as it is but i dont think that astute is observers were particularly surprised that it was close and then i think also there was just enormous turnout in this race who did turn it looks like there will be about 25000000 more votes cast in toward 20 than in any previous election particularly over 2016 and when you get that kind of turnout its the the polling becomes look much less reliable because its likely not capturing people that are going to go out on election day so yes it was are closer than we expected but at the same time if all of the states that former Vice President biden is lit is in which hes currently leading turned out to be the ones in which he went there will be a bit of an electoral Electoral College landslide though certainly and by the way hes won in the popular vote right now while so they wont look the same as the trop turned out and the truck result in 26 k. But when its all said and done and all of votes are counted i think the victory is going look Pretty Healthy thank you so much professor for talking to us Michael Fauntroy is a professor of Political Science at Howard University in washington thank you for your time. Roger lets lets take a look at some other world news and the United Nations is calling for a deescalation of tensions in ethiopias northern taker a region after the federal government to launch a military operation there Prime Minister ahmed declared a 6 month state of emergency integration and has accused the regions ruling party of attacking federal troops but local authorities dismissed static using the Nobel Peace Prize winning Prime Minister of conflict the conflict into gray has part fears of a civil war and further instability in the horn of Africa Malcolm webb is following developments for us from neighboring kenya. Ethiopia was due to hold nationwide elections in august that they were postponed the Central Government said because of covert 19 its a grain Regional Government said that meant Prime Minister ahmed and his government would no longer legitimate to grain Regional Government when they had no doubt organize its own Regional Elections in september the Central Government didnt accept the results of that election so we really had a situation where these 2 or thirtys werent recognizing each other the central federal government and threatened to cut funding to the to grow region its also significant that the majority of ethiopias armed forces are stationed in the to great region including most of its tanks and its heavy artillery that again Regional Government has said that that part of the military known as the Northern Command has defected to its side to the Central Government refutes that but certainly any split within ethiopias large military along with the grain aligned militias already on that side do pose a very high risk of a very dangerous civil war and now the reason for so much of the military being based in that part of the countries because of decades of conflict between ethiopia and neighboring eritrea another conflict was finally resolved 2 years ago. When Prime Minister made came to power he was even given a Nobel Peace Prize for ending is now we have a situation where eritrea is allied with the Central Government in addis ababa a conflict between addis ababa and to great could see eritrea being drawn in on this about as side that risks spreading the conflict around the region destabilizing the whole of the horn of africa.
