Amarillo Boulevard pedestrian safety initiative progressing In conjunction with a Texas Department of Transportation initiative designed to bolster pedestrian safety along a portion of East Amarillo Boulevard, Amarillo city officials are expected to consider operating and maintaining signals slated for installation. The Amarillo City Council is scheduled to address an agenda item during Tuesday's virtual regular session, focusing on a resolution detailing the city agreeing to operate and maintain TxDOT signals installed with eligible federal or special program funds in the 1000 and 1500 blocks of Amarillo Boulevard East. In July 2020, TxDOT Amarillo District officials indicated the office received $603,000 worth of bulk construction funding for pedestrian improvements on Amarillo Boulevard - targeting installation of Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons as part of TxDOT’s Road to Zero program aimed at ending deaths on Texas roads by 2050. Officials noted Pedestrian Highway Beacons are pedestrian-activated warning devices, which safely aid pedestrians in crossing major roadways where there is not a traffic signal.
