Anne Arundel County prepares to reopen government offices in July

While Maryland reached a goal over the weekend to get at least 70% of its residents at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the state's counties are working to reach that threshold to reopen.|| COVID-19 updates | Maryland's latest numbers | Get tested | Vaccine Info ||The White House over the weekend congratulated Maryland for reaching a goal of getting 70% of the population to get at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. But what exactly does that mean for county operations?Anne Arundel County employees will return to work in their offices starting July 6, County Executive Steuart Pittman announced Tuesday morning."Child-care centers not at full capacity yet, so we're in that transition period where some folks are getting back to work more slowly, and we hope that they will get back to work soon," Pittman said.On July 19, all county buildings -- including the Arundel Center in Annapolis -- will fully reopen to the public."But there's a new telework policy that's being reviewed right now," Pittman said. "There will be more telework going on in Anne Arundel County government than we ever had in the past."So what will the public see?Down the road, Pittman said there will be virtual meetings, electronic payments and other pandemic efficiencies that may become permanent. But on July 19, here's what the administration said is happening for sure: Temperature checks will not be required to enter a county building; however, unvaccinated people will be required to wear face masks indoors in county buildings. Officials said signage to that effect will be going up shortly.Pittman said that mask order is "to protect our county buildings, our county employees and the public from a fall surge.""I believe people really need to have as many reasons as possible to get vaccinated," Pittman added. The county is winding down its large-scale vaccine clinics, officials said Tuesday. They are done giving first doses at the Live Casino site and are looking to wind down first-dose operations the others."We are going to be going to a much more rotated and distributed vaccination model," Anne Arundel County Health Officer Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman said. "We are looking to partner with dollar stores, barbershops and beauty salons and other businesses to really put vaccinations where people are."Maryland online vaccination site locatorVaccine Data DashboardMaryland vaccination plan FAQsOfficials said data shows 69% of Anne Arundel County adults have been vaccinated so far, which is just shy of the state and national goal of 70% -- a goal that Kalyanaraman called an important threshold to meet."Not only are you protecting those people who are vaccinated, but you're also really protecting those who are not vaccinated as well because you're able to cut down the rates of transmission," Kalyanaraman said.Anne Arundel County's vaccination goal is to get at least 80% of eligible residents vaccinated, but officials want to reach 90%, knowing a big part of getting there is related to a vaccine approved for younger children."Not only are you protecting those people who are vaccinated, but you're also really protecting those who are not vaccinated as well because you're able to cut down the rates of transmission," Kalyanaraman said. The county is also focused on making it easier for adults to get the vaccine, which means making it easier to store and administer doses.
