APPLETON - Bird electric scooters are coming to Appleton, the hometown of the company's founder and CEO, Travis VanderZanden, a 1997 graduate of Appleton North High School. The Common Council voted 14-0 Wednesday to proceed with a pilot program that will deploy 100 Bird scooters for rent throughout the city starting this spring. Before the vote, the council amended the program to prohibit the use of the scooters on the sidewalks of College Avenue between Badger Avenue and Drew Street. Bird Rides Inc. is an app-based dockless scooter sharing program headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Customers locate the stand-up, battery-powered scooters through the app, rent them by the minute and leave them at their destination point. There are no fixed locations where rides must begin and end.
