âThe Ancient Greek Philosopher Heraclitus once said, âChange is the only constant thing in life.â Unquestionably, he was right and all of us periodically experience changes in our lives in a variety of ways. The law is no exception and changes occur when our legislators enact new laws in response to the ever evolving views and values of society. A recent and very important example of this occurred Jan. 4, 2021 when Governor Whitmer signed 20 bipartisan criminal justice reform bills, which provide for significant changes in a number of ways. These new laws were the result of recommendations by the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration, which was created in 2019 to study Michiganâs criminal justice and jail systems and to address jail overcrowding.
