As the highly contagious delta variant ignited outbreaks across New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a $15 million COVID-19 vaccine outreach program targeting ZIP codes with low vaccine rates and increasing infections.
The money will go to community groups that will conduct door-to-door outreach, educational campaigns and other public communication efforts in dozens of neighborhoods hit hardest by delta, which now accounts for about 72% of new coronavirus cases statewide, Cuomo said.
The dire effort aims to reach the roughly 25% of adult New Yorkers, or about 3.5 million people, who have yet to receive at least the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
