The celebration of this day informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies and what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight the use of tobacco and also what people around the world can do to claim their right to health. Although the hazards of tobacco were not new, it is being said that tobacco users can be more vulnerable to COVID- 19 infection. Tobacco usage â India perspective: The use of tobacco leads to nearly 8 million deaths every year globally, according to the World Health Organization, predominantly due to lung and heart diseases. Out of these, over seven million deaths are a result of direct tobacco use, and the rest due to exposure to second-hand smoke. About 80% of the deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
