Australia risks $US43b of âstrandedâ pipelines Feb 2, 2021 â 11.01am Save Share Australia has $US43 billion ($56.2 billion) of gas pipelines under construction or planned that are at risk of becoming âstranded assetsâ as the world works towards carbon neutrality by 2050. The findings from pressure group Global Energy Monitor put Australia as the fifth most exposed country to the risk of stranded pipelines, after China, the US, India and Russia. The not-for-profit organisation, whose backers include the European Climate Fund, found that after a decade-long slowdown in growth in oil and gas pipelines, more than $US1 trillion of projects are still under development around the world, undermining the quest to reach net zero emissions.
