B.1.1.7 variant of SARS-CoV-2 is more transmissible than B.1.526 The emergence of newer variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is the virus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), continues to pose new threats to public health. These variants, many of which have been referred to as variants of concern (VOCs), are often more transmissible and/or more virulent than the wild-type lineage. A new paper available on the medRxiv*preprint server presents evidence that the B.1.1.7 VOC is more transmissible than the B.1.526 strain, which is often considered a variant of interest (VOI), after accounting for the epidemiological scenario in which both were identified.
