Woodall scheduled what attorneys said would be a one-day trial for 9 a.m. Dec. 27. Rye had asked for a trial in the fall and said he hated to set a date two days after Christmas. Prosecuting attorney Alex Garcia had no dates open until October, although the judge pointed to possible dates in December. Rye said he and Garcia had spoken and not been able to reach a resolution in the matter. He had earlier requested a continuance and said at that time that he thought the two attorneys could resolve the matter. Barnes, who served as sheriff from his election in 2018 to August 2020, was indicted last fall on charges including one count of tampering with a witness and a second count of unlawful transaction with a minor, third degree.
