It is 8 00am in singapore, 1am in london, and 8 00pm in florida, which is being hit by the terrifying force of Hurricane Irma, with high winds, torrential rain and widespread coastal flooding. The storm made landfall on the us mainland after smashing its way across the atlantic, destroying thousands of buildings in the caribbean. Some small caribbean islands have been completely flattened, and at least 25 people have been killed. In the us, 6. 5 million residents across the state of florida have been ordered to leave their homes, and more than three million buildings are without power. Aleem maqbool begins our coverage, from miami. They warned miami would flood, and it has. In the hours before it finally hit the florida keys, Hurricane Irma became even more powerful. Brian tribble is one of those who defied the orders to leave his home, and was live on social media as the eye of the Hurricane Katrina it. The massive sea surges were matched by extraordinary footage of the tide being sucked away from shore, Building Energy to surge again. This isa Building Energy to surge again. This is a life threatening situation. Remember, in south west florida, the storm surge comes after the strongest winds. Do not think the storm surges over when the wind flows down. Local officials will let you know when it is safe to go out. The storm surge good russian and could kill you. Alix perez escaped the keys to shelter in a hurricane proof building in miami. He is anxious, keeping in touch with those left behind. A bunch of different areas have Different Levels of housing, some higher and some lower. Some places have floodwaters up to peoples waists, some up to peoples roofs. Up to peoples roofs yeah, very severe flooding. But miami is feeling the impact as well, and with every passing hour the florida mainland is further affected. More than i the florida mainland is further affected. More thani million homes and businesses are already without power. There is barely a soul on the streets anywhere in southern florida, and that is because of the risk of flying debris, the risk of powerlines or trees coming down, and the Emergency Services say that, even for them in the coming hours, it is going to be near impossible to operate. The bbc was allowed to accompany the us air force as it flew into the eye of Hurricane Irma, to track its power and direction. She is a little bit more violent than the rest of them have been. Some storms, like katrina, for example, that was very big, but they said it was well organised and very smooth to fly into. Some of the storm is a much more violent. This one is big and it appears to be quite violent as well. So we expect to be bounced around quite a bit. Up the florida coast, more are preparing, warned that irma could make a direct hit on the most Populated Areas on its destructive path so far. Mark, you are on the line right now. Electricity is out in some 3 million homes, we are being told. Tel is a little bit about what it is like where you are. Well, we were told to evacuate about 2k hours before the hurricane hit key west, and right here, it is high winds and rain, and it is slowing up north. But it is very loud, and very active. Were not getting a very clear line from you, presumably this is storm related as well. You are retired from the air force. I believe you dealt with storm storms like this before, and the aftermath. Tell us in terms of scale how this compares to some of the others that you have experienced. I believe we may have lost mark that, heres an evacuated key west resident. The storm is causing severe disruptions to a lot of businesses in the area, the power supplies, and to a number of homes and buildings. 0ur weather presenter has been on the road in florida, and a short time ago we spoke to him about when the storm is expected to hit them. In the last three hours so the weather has deteriorated dramatically here in tampa. The worst weather is still some five to six hours away, possibly a little bit more, but already we are getting these Tropical Storm force winds. The palm trees are swaying, there are times when there are slight lull is here, but we have already witnessed large limbs flying through the air. So that is why we are not on the road already. I am just taking a moment to go out on the balcony to deliver you this report, but we probably wont be going out much at all now, as it is too dangerous. And we have heard that the National Hurricane centre have said this is a category 2 storm. Talk us through that, and what exactly they mean in terms of neurological sense, and what the residents there might expect. Yes, so residents there might expect. Yes, so the eye of the hurricane has made la ndfall very so the eye of the hurricane has made landfall very close to naples, so once the i start interacting with land overtime, over a day or two, it will start losing a lot of its speed. The storm is still very powerful, it is a very large storm, so powerful, it is a very large storm, so by the time it gets here it will be producing very big gust. So the fa ct be producing very big gust. So the fact it has weakened somewhat is not surprising. Still very serious. And are they people there in the hotel with you . We are getting reports that a lot of people have been preparing to leave. They are also in that strange situation, wondering whether or not they can leave their homes, or if they should. Yes, in fa ct, homes, or if they should. Yes, in fact, we have actually spoken to people that travelled earlier this week from southern parts of florida to get out of the path of the storm, and now they have found themselves right in the path of Hurricane Irma, so right in the path of Hurricane Irma, so they shifted from one place to another. And there are quite a few people in the hotel, but not all rooms have been filled. The reason for that is that they are not taking any for that is that they are not taking a ny extra for that is that they are not taking any extra people. And now, everybody should be hunted down by now, but earlier on they were not taking any more people in. It was a deterrent to try and get them to get out of the state. We have been offered flashlights, tortures, and there is a chance that the power will go out here in the city, but certain parts of the city have backup, mobile backup generators, so there will be points at which power should remain during the storm. But behind me it is obviously looking rough. This is nowhere near as rough as it is going to get later on. That is still hours away. This is just to get later on. That is still hours away. This isjust the to get later on. That is still hours away. This is just the edge of the storm. In the caribbean, at least 25 people were killed by Hurricane Irma, five of them in the British Virgin islands, where a relief effort is under way. Homes and boats have been destroyed and a state of emergency declared, as the authorities grapple with repairs to infrastructure and safeguarding supplies. 0ur correspondent laura bicker reports from tortola. We ran to the living room. Glass everywhere. We had all this boarded up. Youve lost everything . Everything. People talk about the winds that came through here as if they were alive, as if it had come from another world. And now, five days after the hurricane struck, they are in desperate need of food, of shelter, and clean water. Others are just simply desperate to leave. The shock of seeing this terrifying force of nature is overwhelming. Some are trying to fly home to relatives in the uk. This family made it to the shelter after neighbours with machetes hacked through debris to help them hike from their damaged home. We dont know what planes are going, or when theyre going. There are also reports of looting across the island, as many are desperate for basic supplies. There are large queues for food and for petrol. Help has now arrived. The British Military have brought aid, and are already re establishing order. They are working on a plan to try to restore power and water. One woman told me she wept with relief as she saw the plane land. Hurricane irmas trail of destruction is vast, and yet the caribbean spirit prevails.
