Democratic response, this was more a Campaign Said remarks rather conciliatory vision. We are in Campaign Mode thanks very much for your comments. And its going live to capitol hill where joe your comments. And its going live to capitol hill wherejoe crowley is with me, chairman of the Democratic Party caucus in the house of representatives. You have the president reaching out to you, saying he wants to work with you on Immigration Reform, infrastructure. Are you going to take the olive branch . Ive felt the back of his hand, not his hand reaching out. It was insulting to democrats. It wasnt an offer at all. The republicans and the president have squandered over 2 trillion in this tax cut, where is the money going to come from four infrastructure . We have the chance to do that but they have the chance to do that but they have squandered these resources. And on Immigration Reform, the president really didnt offer anything to democrats. What hes done is taken more hostages. Weve gone from 800,000 individuals who are dreamers to1. 8 800,000 individuals who are dreamers to 1. 8 million 800,000 individuals who are dreamers to1. 8 million and 800,000 individuals who are dreamers to 1. 8 million and we include those here in temporary protected status, we can add another 250,000 more to that lot. Its time to stop taking hostages and get down to real comprehensive Immigration Reform and dealing with the dreamers. Joe crowley, the government is only funded through next week and you need to have some kind of an outline of agreement on the dreamers, or are we going to have another Government Shutdown . Whats more important is to get a number on the spending in this country as well, and what we know as democrats, when they need more money in a budget for a more robust spending package, they need democratic support and if they need that in the house that the bill will be more reflective of democratic values, including the issue of dreamers. With midterm elections in november, you dont have that much incentive to compromise and give him a win . We are going to win for the American People. The president has simply failed to extend that hand. I didnt take tonight as a hand reach out. This was the president playing to his political base. I heard the other person speak aboutjoe kennedys beach, havent heard it yet, but the president was speaking to his base slowly tonight speech. Back to you jay newton small and ron christie, formerly in the white house with president george w bush. Doesnt seem like peace and love breaking out on that response from the democrats after the president tried to reach out. What did joe crowley just tell us . The republicans are hostageta kers, strident remarks coming from the chair of the democratic re election committee. What i thought was interesting about his approach, you didnt find one area where he said we as democrats can work with this administration, heres where we can work with our colleagues in the house and it was very much setting up, we house and it was very much setting up, we are house and it was very much setting up, we are for one group and the president is for another, rather than this is a night where america can come together. But the president is taking the dreamers hostage, saying he will take away their. President obama has taken away an order that was deemed unconstitutional and the president said im going to give congress six months to work it out. President obama had two years where he had both sessions of congress when he could have passed this. Let me bring injay newton could have passed this. Let me bring in jay newton small, could have passed this. Let me bring injay newton small, what are the prospects based on what you heard congressman cowie saying and the president for an agreement next week . To runs point, it was Mitch Mcconnell under barack obama who said we arent going to give the president a win, our firstjob is to make sure he isnt re elected and we are going to be the party of opposition to runs. That was his strategy moving forward under barack obama so what incentive to democrats have two work with republicans to buck ron christie, jay newton small, thanks very much and we can go live to senator jeff flake, thanks very much and we can go live to senatorjeff flake, republican from arizona. You have been a noted critic of the president , what did you make of his speech . It had his moments, some of it was a unifying, references to folks in the gallery, exa m ples of references to folks in the gallery, examples of heroism, that was certainly unifying but some of it was decidedly not. A lot of the immigration discussion was more negative and that was unfortunate. Senator flake, you have been very prominent in calling for a solution to the dreamers, those young undocumented people brought here illegally by their parents as children, some see permits expiring in march and they faced deportation, what did you make of what he said, the four pillars of the deal he wants from democrats on immigration . They face. 1. 8 million having a path to citizenship in exchange for Border Security measures, thats positive. Thats a good measure introduced by the president or proposal introduced last friday. Sticking to that was a good thing. Some of the other measures, getting rid of the diversity visa, chain migration, thats above and beyond the daca kind of deal so that will require negotiation and thats why i hope to have a more unifying message because anything we do on immigration has to be bipartisan, we need 60 votes in the senate and frankly closer to 70 if its going to pass the house. I would have hoped to have had a bit more of a unifying message there. Senator fla ke, unifying message there. Senator flake, what did you make of the president saying he would keep open the Detention Centre at grand obey . Obviously we have to have a resolution at some point and i hope were moving towards one at Guantanamo Bay. Ba rack were moving towards one at Guantanamo Bay. Barack obama wanted to do that, he was unable to, i hope we are able to at some point but the reality is such and the politics are such that its a very difficult thing to do. I dont think any of us should be cheering to keep one ton of open. We ought to be able to close it as soon as we can la nta na close it as soon as we can lantana mode. What did you make the overall of the president s tone tonight . He has been criticised by so tonight . He has been criticised by so many for being divisive, what did you think of him in terms of his style . You think of him in terms of his style . I have been critical of that as well and i think the speech had its moments. There was a lot of unifying messages, pointing to people in the gallery particularly, but a lot of it was more divisive. Talking about trade for example, some of us think we need to enter into more free trade agreements, not fewer, and not exit out of the ones we are in so some of the things were a bit more divisive. Thats more his style i think. Some of the immigration message was a bit more like the american carnage that we heard in the inaugural speech. It was a bit of all of it frankly, it was a bit of all of it frankly, it was a bit of all of it frankly, it was a long speech, about an hour and a half. Senator flake, thanks for joining us. Back to our panel, ron and jay newton small. Based on what you heard senator flake say, is there a prospect of a deal on immigration to protect the dreamers and keep the government open . I dont think so, he said he wished he heard the president be more bipartisan, especially knowing they would need democratic votes, especially if they are going to pass it in the house, about 70, and he wanted more of an olive branch and not insist on the controversial issues like chain migration, like the diversity visa. That i think. Those are the issues democrats feel were added on in this deal that were not in the original deals theyve been talking about in the last few months. Now theyre saying, why should we agreed to this new deal . They are further and further apart and what he said tonight didnt get them any closer. Jeff fla ke tonight didnt get them any closer. Jeff flake saying it was an american carnage bit of the speech, the bit on immigration, and you made the observation it is a hardline section. Is that donald trump digging in on the issue that got him elected . I think he is, digging in on the issue that got him elected . Ithink he is, and digging in on the issue that got him elected . I think he is, and jay is right, i dont see a pathway to us solving this immigration issue before the next Government Shutdown looming on the february the fifth. Why . The outlines for what senator durbin and senator graham have discussed, talking about the visa lottery system and chain migration, the house of representatives said we are not going to pass that. The president didnt breach the divide we have and we are moving closer to a Government Shutdown and a breach of trying to get an immigration solution. Jay, this is always a big night, the state of the union, the pmp night, the state of the union, the pomp and circumstance and the president has the platform, did his speech tonight change any of the dynamics in washington . To the subject we were talking about, immigration, i think he made things worse. We noticed Chuck Schumers face during his talk about immigration, he is the Senate Minority leader, the democrat in the senate, he looked furious but these are the people he needs to negotiate with to avoid a shutdown and they we re with to avoid a shutdown and they were furious. I dont know if they have done much, i think they have made it worse, for negotiators, moving ahead, especially on the one issue, which has been the most difficult issue this year on capitol hill. The president talked about the new american moment but once the warm glow of the speech has evaporated and hes back on twitter, did anything change . Evaporated and hes back on twitter, did anything change . |j evaporated and hes back on twitter, did anything change . I think it did, for so many americans, we have heard the resistance, we have seen hollywood and a cultural shunning of the president and if you came in the night and gave him a fair opportunity to present his agenda, he did rather well. Jon sopel moments ago said the president did weave together very successfully those american citizens, that tapestry, of his vision. We will be pleasantly surprised in the next couple of days as long as he stays off twitter and doesnt step on his owfi message. Off twitter and doesnt step on his own message. A big if could you formulate your closing thoughts on the night and on the president , what would you have to say about President Trumps first state of the Union Address, jay . I thought it was theatrical, i thought he presented a show and certainly was entertaining, and thats always been his goal, often his goal, i should say. I dont know if he moved the mark on policy and i dont know if i agree with ron. He might have slightly moved the mark on policy more to the negative side, not just moved the mark on policy more to the negative side, notjust on immigration but north korea. The tau nts immigration but north korea. The taunts against the north Korean Leader are not the best way weve seen leader are not the best way weve seen to deal with him as a leader, normally ends up causing him to do all kinds of things that make him more unpredictable. He avoided the elephant in the room, which was russia, and really didnt address a lot of those lingering questions about even russian sanctions, which are meant to go into effect this week, which congress has been pushing for. It was a good speech, i wouldnt say great, i would say for trump it was a good speech. He is so rarely fully on message and he almost word for word in the transcript went on message today. As weve seen in the past, last year i was saying, wow, he actually had grab it has, he did this pretty well, if he can carry this on it will be a real change in his tone but of course he didnt. We know from past experience that he will go on twitter and maybe stepped on it. Ron, your closing thoughts on the nights performance by the president . He started in the same way he ended it, making America Great again. Once again he was eloquent in using real american heroes, first responders, military, people who form the basis of American Life to help tell his story but whats important for me is he had the opportunity to rally the country, but the question is, how will people review his remarks . Did he get the job done . A good job but he get the job done . A good job but he could have stressed other areas better. Ron christie, jay newton small, thanks for joining better. Ron christie, jay newton small, thanks forjoining us for this marathon evening of coverage, we appreciate your presence. Thats all from us here in washington. Thank you so much forjoining us for this bbc news special on president donaldj this bbc news special on president donald j trumps this bbc news special on president donaldj trumps first state of the union. Ill hand you over to the capable hands of my colleague mike embley who is over the pond in london. Thank you very much indeed, laura. In case you havejust joined us, lets round up what we have been hearing in the president s words. President trump has delivered his first state of the Union Address to the us congress. He started by saying he had taken forward what he called his Righteous Mission to make America Great again for all americans, during his first year in office. And mr trump called on congress to set aside differences and seek the unity needed to serve the American People. Mr trump told the audience that he intended to reverse president obamas decision to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Centre. In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds and hundreds of dangerous terrorists, only to meet them again on the battlefield including the isis leader, al baghdadi, who we captured, who we had, who we released. So today, i am keeping another promise. Ijust signed, prior to walking in, an order directing secretary mattis, who is doing a great job, thank you. Applause. To re examine our military detention policy, and to keep open the detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay. Barbara plett usherjoins me now from capitol hill. We have been talking about the tone of this is much more optimistic from a president who talked of american carnage in his inauguration speech, who has been very divisive. But some of the meat of this is very dark, isnt it . There is the signing of the order to keep open guantanamo, which we know that president obama, but also george w bush, colin powell thought was bad for american security, recruiting terrorists. We also have President Trump saying he wa nts to also have President Trump saying he wants to modernise and rebuild the nuclear arsenal, then this curious point where he goes off script when he is talking about the vote in the un against the us recognition of jerusalem, and talks about enemies of the us, among which he seems to include American Allies the uk, france and germany. Yes, he hit those kinds of notes, ones that he has sort of alluded to was said before, in terms of one time amo, it is true that previous president s have acknowledged that it was a problem for americas reputation. I mean, at the list of things. And he didnt really go into detail about what it would mean. He put it in context of enemy combated is needing to be arrested and put in jail context of enemy combated is needing to be arrested and put injail combatants. He didnt say anything about the ones that were already there that were supposed to be released, what would happen to them. So it was a statement of reversal but no expansion about what exactly that would mean. In terms of jerusalem, yes, that is a tone that he has had from the beginning, that we will take this decision no matter what you think tom and if you defy us on what you think tom and if you defy us on it, then we will make you pay. That was what his un ambassador said, and what he has repeated as well. So he did strike those notes. But i have to say that they were not the main message. The broader themes, the broader approach, i think, was one of unusual can sillier tory ness, if i can put it that way. He had a well paced delivery conciliatory ness. Several times he reached across the aisle to the democrats, and also wrapping up these broader american themes, hearkening tojoint wrapping up these broader american themes, hearkening to joint historic moments, heroes, icons, and in the end saying it is the American People who make America Great again. That sort of approach, i think, went down very well, certainly amongst the republicans, and could be appreciated by some, although not all democrats. When it comes to immigration, mr trump outlined how his America First agenda will guide his strategy, and called on both parties to come together on the issue. There were some swipes about violent crime, and he outlined how his America First agenda will guide his strategy, calling for both parties to come together on the issue. The United States is a compassionate nation. We are proud that we do more than any other country, anywhere in the world, to help the needy, the struggling, and the underprivileged, all over the world. But, as president of the United States, my highest loyalty, my greatest compassion, my constant concern, is for americas children, americas struggling workers, and americas forgotten communities. I want our youth to grow up to achieve great things. I want our poor to have their chance to rise. So tonight, i am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, democrats and republicans,
