And backed up what he said those increasing Corporation Tax to the oecd rate, up to 2496. Some people would be worried about that amount in the tail block. He said i realise of borrowing. In the interest you what it said was wrong and causing would have to pay on it. The key great deal of distress and events. Thing is we are able to service that it was not my intention to do so. We debt and we know we can do it, we put this on social media s morning. Have chris lee numbers, we note as is that they do not want to add any possible. The bigger issue is we know we have to spend this money and painted the tragic event. He says oh we have to get it from somewhere. So apologised unreservedly. At the moment, borrowing chairman, James Cleverly, and we roads rates are at historical will put those points to him. I guess the way constituencies to let another party, you know, take, for example, the like to think about it is a work on perhaps remain vote in that the songs and once they are out into constituency. Are you ongoing with the songs and once they are out into the world no longer belong to me. So those discussions . They are still whatever they want to make of it, it ongoing for us. Stopping brexit, is up to them, its subject give. Remaining in the European Union is ive been pushing for was but he crucial, we want a peoples vote keeps pulling me backwards. Talk because we believe we must attend the environmental standards. We must work with our neighbours constructively to tackle the climate to us about the videos as well. They emergency. Remaining in the eu is a means to an end. Its about taking have watched so many of them and most of them are really kind of the action, the necessary action were talking about today through joyous, fun, also a lot about girl the green union deal with our power. Is that important to you . All my closest friends are all girls who partners across europe. Which have grown up with a school and day parties are you talking to and how many seas are you was for like they have thrived parties are you talking to and how many seas are you talking about perhaps standing aside . Better of politics, construct a form of posix where we are not tribal and some days they dont read into the fighting each other but are working together in the interests of the comments. Some days they maybe feel country for the common good and were getting a lot of very positive a little bit more vulnerable and a feedback, people encouraging us to do it. They really hope it happens. Dive in and almost go looking for things that they dont want to see. In the hope of spending all this think it is definitely human nature money that you want to spend some and they dont want to hide that and you have one mp at the moment, except to radically change for you. I definitely dont want to hide that of course in the local elections we because they want people to hear more than double the number of that we are all human and we go counsellors in european elections, through the same thing, social media can be such an amazing tool and it we doubled our meps, we came first can be such an amazing tool and it can be such an amazing tool and it can be so fun to share things, but and second places around the country at the same time its almost a in european elections was of those places we are targeting. More than breeding ground for hate and anxiety that, every single green vote will send the message to westminster that and people feel like they can say things because they are hiding things need to change and they need behind a computer screen and i to change now that we need to change think, for me, its important to use urgently. Were the only party putting for these radical proposals, social media, like bitesize. You doing what needs be done. And we are ata doing what needs be done. And we are at a crossroads as a country. So if you send us into westminster you are literally die rhyce sky muster taking us down a very specific that shopping mall. I am crazy with my is going to tackle that Climate Emergency that is going to come calendar it is how i feel in control forward with those plans. We have of my life. Mr shopping mall. A bit of frost around for many of you, but morning sunshine will be replaced by afternoon rain. I will have all the forecast details right here on brea kfast. It is wednesday 6 november. Our top story a man has gone on trial in new zealand accused of murdering a british backpacker after they met on a dating website. The body of 22 year old Grace Millane was found in woodland on the outskirts of auckland last december. 0ur correspondent phil mercer was in court. Phil, thank you forjoining us this morning. What more have we been hearing in the courtroom . Well, we have been hearing very intimate and confronting evidence. The parents of Grace Millane were in courtjust a few metres away from the man accused of murdering their daughter. So, as you can imagine, it must have been an excruciating day for them at the high court here in auckland. The prosecution says that Grace Millane was strangled by a man she met on an Online Dating app in his apartment in the centre of auckland. The following day, according to the prosecution, this man went on a date with another woman, while Grace Millanes body lay in his apartment. Now, the defence has a very different view of this. It believes that this is not a case of murder, that this is not a case of murder, that Grace Millane died accidentally after a sex game went wrong. And it alleges that the defendant tried to conceal her body in bushland on the outskirts of auckland because he believed that no one would believe his story. Phil, it is obviously big news back in the uk. How big a story is it in new zealand . It is enormous. Grace millane was on a gap year here in new zealand. She had only arrived in the country a couple of weeks before she died at the time, the new zealand Prime Minister, jacinda ardern, spoke of her countrys hurt and shame that the british backpacker had come to a country where she could be safe, and of course, that trip of a lifetime endedin of course, that trip of a lifetime ended in utter catastrophe for her and her family. Phil moser, thank you very much for talking to us. Mercer. It is wednesday 6 november. Our top story andrew bridgen has become the second conservative politician in two days to apologise for comments he made in relation to the Grenfell Tower fire. He was defending his party colleagueJacob Rees Mogg, who apologised yesterday for appearing to suggest that victims of the fire had lacked common sense by heeding the fire brigades advice to stay put. Lets get more on this from our Political Correspondent chris mason in downing street. Chris, what did mr bridgen say . And what is going on . Right, yes. So lets rewind to how this began. As you say, Jacob Rees Mogg, the leader of the house of commons, he was on a radio phone in yesterday radio phone in and of the house of commons, he was on a radio phone in and was talking about the Grenfell Tower fire. He said radio phone in and was talking about the Grenfell Towerfire. He said if either of us were in the building, we would leave the building, itjust seems like the commonsense thing to do. Jacob rees mogg apologised for his remarks. Andrew bridgen was on the pm programme and acknowledge that what mrrees mogg said was clumsy, but in addition to that, implied that the reason mr rees mogg had said what he said was because he was an authority figure, and when it was an authority figure, and when it was put to him that he was implying that perhaps he was cleverer than those in the tower, he said that dont we want clever people running the country . Now, since then, as you say, there has been this sweet this morning by andrew bridgen, i think we can show it to you now, he says i realise what i said was wrong. Because a great deal of distress and offence. It was not my intention to do so and i do not want to add in any way to the pain this tragic event has caused. I apologise unreservedly. That was mr bridgen effectively attempting yesterday on the radio to apologise on behalf of his colleague, and 12 hours on, he has apologising himself. His colleague, and 12 hours on, he has apologising himselflj his colleague, and 12 hours on, he has apologising himself. I mean, chris, what is your assessment of this . This is right at the start of a five week Election Campaign. They have not even hardly left parliament. Quite, and it is these kinds of events that can often shape an Election Campaign in a way that no partys grid of expected announcements and hoped for news can plan for. These are the events that can shape the context of a campaign, asi can shape the context of a campaign, as i say, that the parties cannot manage. And this is five weeks out. Now, the conservatives will try to get themselves. Pull themselves back together a bit today. They had a very rough day to day. Yesterday, and today hasnt started well either. Borisjohnson will head to see the queen later. He will then head to the West Midlands for the official launch, and he will frame it back to the central message of the campaign, that he says he can get brexit done and labour would dither and delay. But this is not the kind of headline they want to see. Thank you for your analysis. We will be speaking to the leader of the brexit party, nigel farage, in around 20 minutes, and the conservative Party Chairman, James Cleverly, at 7 30am. Throughout the Election Campaign, the bbcs Reality Check Team will be looking at the key issues, explaining the policies that are being talked about and the subjects that arent. You can check out our explainers at bbc. Co. Uk news, or on the bbc news app. Dozens of Police Officers have been attacked with fireworks and bricks during a bonfire night disturbance in leeds. Thanks a lot, thank you. I think there could be a good message. If youre worried think of them as giant potatoes. It hasjust gone 16 minutes plus seven. Let us find out what is happening with the weather. Matt has it for us. Good morning, you giant potatoes. Weather. Matt has it for us. Good morning, you giant potatoeslj weather. Matt has it for us. Good morning, you giant potatoes. I am probably a baby potato more like. Good morning. A hope you while all well. A bit chilly out there this morning. A bit chilly out there this morning. A bright start for many. Quite seriously murky in burton on trent. Atmospheric with mister over the river. If you are about to Step Outdoors it is pretty chilly. Temperatures are 4 in parts of highland scotland. Temperatures close to freezing in other parts of england, wales, Northern Ireland, as far south as 0xford, 0xfordshire, damages freezing at the moment. Rusty for many of you. Temperatures not as low around the coast at the moment. It is here we have the showers. Showers on the go. Down to eastern counties of england and towards the west. Those showers are the ones that could develop a bit further as we go through the morning, particularly south of scotland, wales, and western parts of england started to become lengthier and more prolonged as they had northwards and eastwards. Further measures of rain pushing across Northern Ireland and south west later on in the day. Some of you will stay dry throughout. Still some sunshine at times. Between wintry showers and the far north of scotland, not the temperatures as they go around. Temperatures around 6 nine for the vast majority. A wet afternoon across southern scotland and into Northern England. Rain at times. Still some Bright Moments in Northern Ireland. As we finish the school day and was leaving rush hour the middle and southern england, rain will start to develop it at the far south amazingly is staying dry until the evening. Even heavier bus of rain waiting in the winds for the evening across the south west and South West Wales. Through the night that will start to push northwards and eastwards. Spiralling around the developing area of low pressure. To the north the showers will turn increasingly sleet and snow we across the tops of the hills. Temperatures tonight not as low as last night, not as frosty to start tomorrow morning. Still a chilly start. There will be a breeze in northern scotland, wintry showers. Sunshine and thundery showers in the south. In between we have got to check this area of rain. Stars in east anglia, southeast, and pushes northwards and sits across north wales. It is where is it through the afternoon that could be the risk of some flooding. That could be a little further north but a little bit further south. For the millers and other parts, keep choking the forecast for tomorrow. Another chilly day. The showers of scotland will be wintry in nature. We will be bringing that cold air southwards again as we go into it morning. The rainband, the weather, lingering cross east anglia the south east friday morning. We see the working week out across east anglia the south east without breaks not about friday in store. 0ne south east without breaks not about friday in store. One or two isolated showers in the east. Most will have a dry and sunny day even if it is still chilly. To get us into the weekend, a frosty start, but we will start to see more rain spread its way in. As that pushes in with some strengthening winds across the country it will turn to snow over the Higher Ground of north wales, Northern England, and across scotla nd Northern England, and across scotland for a time. On the hills, for most of you it will be rain on saturday with gusty winds. Which by sunday will be limited to eastern areas. Become dry on sunday. The best of the sunshine on sunday will best of the sunshine on sunday will be in the west. But it will be staying rather chilly throughout. Back to you both. Thank you. We have those mornings were the words dont come out in the right order. Baked potato me. Mashed potato. It is 19 minutes plus seven. We look at the papers this morning. A photo of the queen leads this a newspaper. Her majesty has decided to stop wearing animal fur. Animal rights campaigners say theyre thrilled. The mirror reports that a breakthrough dna test for newborn babies could save 3,000 lives a year. The test could be rolled out in three years if a pilot scheme is successful. Also has Emilia Clarke on there. The mail leads on the news that workers on South Western Railway will stage 27 days of strike action during december and new years day, as part of a long running dispute over train guards. The paper says the walkout will inflict misery on commuters, sports fans and those visiting family and friends. And the Huffington Post has a story about a new range of brexit themed christmas jumpers. The knitwears carry the slogan merry brexmas or were crackers. That is one of the big stories in the Huffington Post at the moment. like this story. Quite a few of the papers are talking about this man. He was a competitive cyclist in the 19505. He was a competitive cyclist in the 1950s. He started logging his cycling trips in diaries in 1952. These are his diaries. He is going to, very shortly, he has cycled 1 million miles. It is absolutely staggering. I think he cycles 25 miles, up to 25 miles every other day. He has been called an inspiration. They know you love these kind of fat. The same distance as travelling to the moon and back twice. Absolutely brilliant. Look at him. Another interesting story. Yesterday we were talking about how one run a week can extend your life according to scientists, love those kind of messages, dont i . You enjoyed reading that one. kind of messages, dont i . You enjoyed reading that one. I will cut my running down to one a week. This is another one. Exercising forjust over half an hour a day can cut the risk of depression even in those with a Family History of the condition. This is according to a scientist in a harvard study. It shows that genes are notjust me, despite previous destiny suggesting 40 of the risk of developing depression is genetic with the condition passed down in families. 0n condition passed down in families. On average, 35 minutes a day spent on activities like yoga, dance, cardio machines appear to lower the risk of depression by 17 . Cardio machines appear to lower the risk of depression by 1796. We are obviously, as well, today talking quite a bit about the Election Campaign. We are speaking to James Cleverly after 7 30am. We will be talking about a second apology from the conservative party overJacob Rees Moggs comments about Grenfell Tower. Andrew bridgen has apologised today. Youll be talking about that. And nigel farage will be with us in a few minutes talking about the brexit Party Strategy for the general election. I read an interesting tweet yesterday from nick robertson, former bbc political correspondence, saying policy is one thing in general elections, but it is so often about personalities and attitudes and values as well. Seeing that a lot of the last 24 hours or so. That a lot of the last 24 hours or so. Absolutely. This is right at the start of a five Week Campaign. Nigel farage coming up shortly. Also Marks Spencer reported another big fall in profits according to the latest results. We have just had this figures in the last few minutes. There is a familiar tale for Marks Spencer, profits down another 17 as they are midway through this turnaround plan that feels like it has been going on forever. A familiar tale insofar as food sales we re familiar tale insofar as food sales were up slightly by 0. 9 . Another 515 fall in clothing sales. For them, they are just trying to work out how they can make the two perform well stop how do they get people back through the doors buying their clothing and furniture and that sort of thing. We have heard from the boss this morning, steve rowe, he has talked about the turnaround plan. It is interesting. He says for the first time were starting to see the potential for the far reaching changes we are making. Call me a cynic but this has been going on for a long time. To say it is the first time our beginning to see the results of that is quite remarkable. And they have been doing quite a lot. They have bought the online grocer and that, they say, is there big push into Online Food Delivery are know to get more of their stuff and more of our homes. But they were criticised for being so later to online as well. In the statement they talk about becoming a Digital First retailer, which many will say is too little, too late. They not well equipped enough to take on some of the stronger online rivals. And, remember, they are closing a number of stores, cutting a number ofjobs and trying to save money because it is really tough for Marks Spencer right now given the faster, cheaper rivals out there. In the meantime, mothercare comedy clubs shops stop closing already. For mothercare, finally the confirmation they will disappear from the high streets in the uk. The administration confirmed yesterday. Those are 79 stores that mothercare have will close. We know 2500 jobs affected. They are describing it as affected. They are describing it as a phased closure. It will disappear from the high streets in the uk. International business is doing very well. Itsjust a uk problem was that they are trying to secure pensions for the workers affected. Thank you very much. Thank you. It is 25 minutes past seven. Nigel farage started his Election Campaign yesterday in a boxing ring. Will his plaintive field candidacy nearly every seat including those targeted by the conservatives prove to bea targeted by the conservatives prove to be a knockout blow by splitting the lever vote . We can ask that now. Hejoins us from nottingham. Thank you for coming on the programme. Good to talk to you. I noticed that you tweeted earlier this morning that you are coming on bbc brea kfast. That you are coming on bbc breakfast. I was looking at the responses to that we can quite a few people mentioning that you are allowing uks best chance to leave, they said, the eu to go away by not striking a deal with the tories. And as we suggested that, splitting the vote. What do you say to that . Im the one that made the offer. They made repeatedly to borisjohnson to say lets build a Live Alliance of labour, brexit party, and conservatives, and lets by the election together. If we did that we would been a big majority. Heres the problem. Boris johnson would been a big majority. Heres the problem. Borisjohnson went to a deal with us and the reason is he is stuck with his new yewtree to stop and it doesnt work. Heres morace saying i will get brexit done. It will all be over by christmas and yet last night Michel Barnier, and judge of the eus negotiations, has basically said theres no of us leaving by the end of 2020 in charge. He said it would go on for another three years. Im thank you mrjohnson, for goodness sake, stop pretending that your so called deal means we leave the European Union, because we dont. In fairness, the reason why they havent agreed to a deal with you is because you with that stipulated because he stipulated that he would have to drop the britza deal they got a second reading in the commons. Surely you knew that the conservatives would never agree to that. Brexit deal. The general election is a chance to press the reset button. General election is when parties fight a new manifest with different candidates and you get a different parliament. Its a great time to press the reset button. I think that Michel Barnier has torpedoed boriss Campaign Today by saying were not leaving, even by the end of next year. Still think there is time for an accommodation to be mad, but if there is not then the brexit party is the only Party Standing clearly saying we have got to have a clean break and that date of the 31st of january must be the day on which we leave. Isnt it true that people inside your own party say only the brexit party, but there are some who dont agree with you and a living because of that exact fa ct, and a living because of that exact fact, because when they look at that choice and see borisjohnsons brexit deal or no brexit at all, they say you have to back the tories . A tiny handful do. 20 and the last few weeks. 0h, tories . A tiny handful do. 20 and the last few weeks. Oh, no, thats simply not true. Every party when it comes to election. We have lost one candid because she is pregnant, another because they are real. But we still have over 600 people, in fa ct we still have over 600 people, in fact 3000 people who apply to state forest. We a re fact 3000 people who apply to state forest. We are ready to fight this election to get people a choice who applied to stand for us. Do you wa nt who applied to stand for us. Do you want a second referendum with labour, have a remainers that would boris that will go on for years and yea rs, boris that will go on for years and years, or a clean break exit with us . That is the choice before the electric on december 12. Us . That is the choice before the electric on december12. Election. You say you have people willing to stand but you are not willing to stand but you are not willing to stand and put your name in the ring to be an mp . Im traversing the length and breadth of the United Kingdom in the next five weeks. So is the Prime Minister, so wasJeremy Corbyn. Weeks. So is the Prime Minister, so was Jeremy Corbyn. Jeremy corbyn represents a party that has been around for 120 years and is in islington, one of the safest seats. He literally has to go once in the whole of the next five and a half weeks, indeed, anybody who stood for the labour party would win in islington. We are six months old. They had a choice. Why spend my time ina they had a choice. Why spend my time in a constituency trying to win that or out fighting a National Campaign . Do or out fighting a National Campaign . Doi or out fighting a National Campaign . Do i spent . Im want people to know two things, labour had broken all their promises, and if you are one of the 5 million labour leave voters you should not vote for Jeremy Corbyns party. A number two, the idea that we get brexit done on the idea that we get brexit done on the other side of the negotiations are saying it will go on for three yea rs or are saying it will go on for three years or more needs to be exposed. I know we all want this over and done with. By boris picking up mrs mays fails deal, putting some new wrapping paper around it, that is not brexit. So when someone accuses you of saying you are running scared, mr farage, you have not been elected on seven occasions, you dont want to put your heart in. You are dismissing matt, are you . have once stood and had a realistic chance of winning a seat. It all finished up with a lengthy trial and the conservative party massively overspending. I have led two different parties to winning two elections in european elections. Im farfrom elections in european elections. Im far from scared of the electorate. But i dont want to spend my time reaching tens of thousands of people and by going round the country eye can reach millions of people and, in doing so, hope and believe we can get a good of Brexit Party Mps into parliament, because someone has got to tell the truth. Borisjohnsons deal is not brexit. 0k, can ask you to tell the truth on this one, then. The telegraph are reporting that you are in secret talks with eurosceptic tories. Is that true . I have lots of them ringing up every day and the chairman richard tice saying what we have to do in orderfor chairman richard tice saying what we have to do in order for you chairman richard tice saying what we have to do in orderfor you like chairman richard tice saying what we have to do in order for you like to stand against us . The answer is quite simple. If theyjust say stand against us . The answer is quite simple. If they just say they would never vote for this appalling new eu treaty again, but they want us new eu treaty again, but they want us to have a clean vote break from the European Union, a relationship based on trade and politics, then we are happy to talk to conservative oriented labour mps. We are in this not for ourselves. We are in this, ive formed this party, andi are in this, ive formed this party, and i will always put country before party to get us free of the institutions of the European Union. Do you think there might be a deal with the tories at some stage . I dont know. I have been putting out an olive branch. I have been trying my hardest to build an alliance. So far i have had sand thrown back into my eyes, but were still trying. Is it true that because you dont get along with senior tories, you are allowing personalities to get in the way of this . That is utter rubbish. Personalities here are irrelevant. This is about policy. I want us to leave the European Union and leave its institutions. That is what 17. 4 its institutions. That is what17. 4 Million People voted for. Boris johnson right now is telling people thatis johnson right now is telling people that is deal, which is in fact a new international treaty, he is telling Us International treaty, he is telling us that gets brexit done. It does no such thing. It locks us into the eu, it costs us a fortune. We dont get back our rights. We will have the European Court ruling us for years to come. Now is the chance. Mr johnson, if you press that reset button, i will support you fully and you will win the election. Mr farage, thank you for talking to us on bbc breakfast this morning. And we will be speaking to the government, we will be speaking to James Cleverly, we have had a couple of apologies in the last 24 hours about what conservative mps have been saying about grenfell. Yes, andrew bridgen and Jacob Rees Mogg, two quite significant conservative Party Members apologising over what they have said in the last 48 hours or so. Time now to get the news, travel, and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london, im sonja jessup. Londons Ambulance Service have condemned those who aimed fireworks at their ambulances last night, saying it is unacceptable to put crews in danger. In a tweet they said theyre among a number of Emergency Services across the country that were targeted on bonfire night. There are claims the ancient woodland of Epping Forest is being stripped of wild mushrooms by pickers selling them off to restaurants and markets. The city of London Corporation says commercial foragers are threatening its biodiversity and depriving animals such as deer of food. It has warned the pickers they could be fined or prosecuted. For the first time, information gathered from tube passengers mobile phones is helping transport bosses provide more accurate data on how long journeys take. Information gathered from the Wi Fi Network has shown it takes longer than first thought to change and pass through some stations at busy times. It has now been used to update tfls journey planner app. A driver in essex has been pulled over by police after they spotted her carrying a rather unusual load. Yes, a double bed, stacked upright in a bmw convertible. 0fficers said the driver told them the bed was wedged in the seat, so it was ok. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. First the tube, and theres some minor delays on thejubilee line, more mechanical issues with the trains this morning. There has been an accident on the m3. Two lanes are closed and traffic is slow as a result northbound from junction 3 to the m25. There are some works slowing things down in wandsworth. The a3 west hill is closed out of town from upper richmond road to sutherland grove. And in edmonton, meridian way is closed northbound from conduit lane, also for works. Now the weather, with Kate Kinsella. Good morning. Its a chilly start out there this morning. The cloud and rain from last night cleared and the temperature dropped. So a much colder start this morning with, however, some bright and some sunny spells. So enjoy the sunshine this morning. It is fairly crisp out there, but well start to see the cloud increasing as we head through the afternoon. Coming in from the west, turning the sunshine hazy at first, then thicker cloud arriving. Youll notice by the end of the day the first band of rain arriving. Temperatures between eight and 11 celsius. Now, overnight tonight, that first band of rain clears and then a second band moves through the early hours of tomorrow morning. So some heavier bursts mixed in with that as well. Temperatures overnight between five and seven celsius. It will be rather a wet start to thursday morning. That rain gradually clearing. Through the afternoon will see some sunny spells. A better day for friday, or at least a drier day. It stays fairly unsettled right the way through to saturday, and the temperature is on the cool side. Thats all for now. Theres more from me in around half an hour. Now its back to louise and dan. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast, with dan walker and louise minchin. Here is a summary of this mornings main stories from bbc news the conservatives are officially launching their Election Campaign today, but it has been overshadowed by a second tory politician, andrew bridgen, having to apologise for comments he made about the Grenfell Tower disaster. Before we get to what mr bridgen said, lets have a quick recap. It all started with the conservative Jacob Rees Mogg, who was being interviewed on lbc when he said this. It seems to me that that is the tragedy of it, that the more one has read over the weekend about the report and about the chances of people surviving, if you just ignore what you are told and leave, you are so what you are told and leave, you are so much safer. And i think if either of us were in a fire, whatever the fire brigade said, we would leave a burning building. Itjust seems the common sense thing to do. Mr rees mogg apologised yesterday for those comments. He said he had been misunderstood. Then, yesterday afternoon, his conservative colleague andrew bridgen was on bbc radio 4 when he spoke in defence of mr rees mogg. Do you think he meant to say that he thought he would not have stayed put . Thats what he meant to say. Thats what he meant to say. By the way, that is exactly what people object to, he is in effect saying i wouldnt have died because i would have been cleverer than the people who took the fire brigades advice. But we want very clever people running the country, dont we, evan . Thats a byproduct of what jacob is, and that is why he is in a position of authority. What hes actually saying as he would have made a better decision than the Authority Figures who gave that advice. This morning, he issued a tweet apologising for that interview. It said we can talk now to the Party Chairman, James Cleverly, who is in our westminster studio. So right at the start of your campaign, you have two apologies. Lets just go back to the comments, if we could, first of all. What do you make of the original comments . Well, they were wrong. They have both said that. They have caused a huge amount of hurt and pain for the people involved. I think they both recognised that, and in the apologies they have made, they recognised that, and i think they we re recognised that, and i think they were right to apologise. Is an apology enough . Well, i think they have both apologised unreservedly. I think that is the right thing for them both to have done in the circumstances, and for me, i think thats really important. So neither of them should resign . No, i dont think so. I think they have both recognised the error, they have recognised the error, they have recognised the error, they have recognised the hurt, and they have apologised. And i do think that is right. Lets just apologised. And i do think that is right. Letsjust get a sense of some of that hurt. For example, karim whose uncle died in the fire said sorry means nothing, it is such an easy word to say. The detachment of the politicians in this government should not exist. This is a very deep hurt for people. Yes, i com pletely a very deep hurt for people. Yes, i completely understand that. I com pletely completely understand that. I completely understand that. I completely understand that. I completely understand that. And i think on reflection they have both realised that they have caused hurt, and that is why they have apologised. And i think we have seen from the wording of both apologies, they realise that they have caused distress and hurt, and they have apologised. Lets go back to that point made about the detachment of politicians from government. Isnt that really fundamental to your campaign, if this kind of attitude is coming up on the airwaves . Well, i think they were both trying to demonstrate an understanding of the magnitude of the report into the ground Grenfell Tower tragedy. It isa ground Grenfell Tower tragedy. It is a terrible situation, a difficult report to read, a painful report to read, and report to read, a painful report to read, and i think, as i say, they we re read, and i think, as i say, they were wrong in what they said. I think they both realise that they we re think they both realise that they were wrong in what they said, and they have apologised accordingly. How damaging is it for your party . Well, obviously i would much prefer to be talking to you about the launch of the Election Campaign and what we planned to do for people, including the people in that community. But it is absolutely right that we discuss Something Like this. It is important. And as i say, ican this. It is important. And as i say, i can only repeat the fact that i think it was absolutely right they recognise that they were wrong and what they said, and that both of them apologised unreservedly. And just back to that point about the community, and the sort of demonstration that exactly what he said there, being out of touch with that community, other communities across the uk . Well, all of us, irrespective of what party were in, get into politics to help the people who dont have the village and dont have power and dont have authority. And sometimes we do make mistakes, and in this instance they both did. They both recognise they made a mistake, the mistake that they made and what they said caused hurt, and they have both apologised. But ultimately everyone in politics gets into Public Service because they wa nt to into Public Service because they want to make peoples lives better, particularly those, as i say, who dont have power and wealth and authority. We dont always get it right, and when we get it wrong, we apologise, and that is what we have done. Lets just apologise, and that is what we have done. Letsjust talk apologise, and that is what we have done. Lets just talk about Jacob Rees Mogg in particular. Is he toxic for your rees mogg in particular. Is he toxic foryourcampaign rees mogg in particular. Is he toxic for your campaign now . Well, as i say, he has recognised that what he said was wrong and caused hurt, and he has apologised, that is absolutely the right thing to do. He will be campaigning, will be campaigning in his consistency and elsewhere, as we all will, but as i say, i think he has done the right thing and apologising unreservedly in the way that he has. thing and apologising unreservedly in the way that he has. I am trying to keep count of the apologies this morning, because lets also talk about another apology, and what happened, actually. Conservative Party Headquarters, the official twitter account doctors a tv interview to make it look like keir starmer could not answer a question. Why did that happen . That was a humourous video which was edited down, as all social media videos are, from a longerform interview that was done on the tv. And what that was done on the tv. And what that video was highlighting is the chaotic nature of the labour partys position on brexit. It was done tongue in cheek, it was obviously light hearted. The music soundtrack demonstrates the fact it was light hearted. Demonstrates the fact it was lighthearted. It was fake. It was fake. We also posted the long form interview that took place, so people can see the whole interview as well as our shorter, as i say, it was distilled, synthesised, humourous, video that we put alongside. But it was faked. It did not say on the video, did it, this has been edited . How would people know . The final frame was still, and it is clearly edited. There was a music soundtrack that wasnt on the original, the colour scheme, people can see that it was an edited video. But also, we posted the long form interview so people can see. After you had been asked about it. The original interview from which it was derived. After it had been pointed out, thats when it was posted. We posted a link to the original interview within minutes of the interview taking place. In fact, within minutes of the interview taking place. Infact, i within minutes of the interview taking place. In fact, i linked on my own twitter account to the full interview on the gmb feed. We were not trying to hide the original interview. The long form interview showed labours chaotic position on brexit, that they were going to negotiate or claim to negotiate an interview, which juncker has negotiate or claim to negotiate an interview, whichjuncker has not allowed. You are undermining your own argument, because then it would not have needed to be doctored. Let me talk aboutjohnny mercer. The third apology this morning, or in the last 24 hours. He did retweeted, you didnt, but he did. It would appear this has inexplicably been doctored at the end. I apologise and will remove it. The original interview was bad enough. I have no idea why this needed altering. I will call this out, whichever side does it, including my own. Sorry, folks. Why can you not call it out . Because it was obviously a humourous, satirical short form video that we posted. We have also, asi video that we posted. We have also, as i say, posted the long form interview so people can see the interview. What we were showing, in asi interview. What we were showing, in as i say distilled, palatable way, the way that the labour Party Position on brexit is in the words ofjuncker and workable. Are you saying thatjohnny mercer is wrong to apologise . I think we posted the full interview from which people derive that bit. 0bviously our clip was light hearted and satirical. Derive that bit. 0bviously our clip was lighthearted and satirical. We will go on breakfast and look at the timings of all of this, because as far as timings of all of this, because as farasi timings of all of this, because as far as i understand, yes, you did do that, but when it had been pointed out that the original interview had been doctored. If you look on my twitter feed you will see me posting a link to the gmb twitter feed which has the interview that gm be put out, that pearce put out. Withjust interview that gm be put out, that pearce put out. With just the words hes not having a good morning. Showing the link to the full. The full form interview showed the labour partys full form interview showed the labour pa rtys position full form interview showed the labour partys position on brexit was chaotic. How do people trust you when conservative Party Headquarters is putting out, and you say its humourous, but some people may not have known, at that point, that it had been edited. How do people trust the conservative party when the twitter account is putting out information like that . It is so obvious that it is edited. It has text overlays, it has a music soundtrack. It is completely obvious that it soundtrack. It is completely obvious thatitis soundtrack. It is completely obvious that it is a light hearted, humourous, short form video. That is com pletely humourous, short form video. That is completely obvious. But we have also posted, ive posted, in the morning, only a few minutes after the interview concluded, the link to the full form interview. Iam interview concluded, the link to the full form interview. I am quite happy for people to go and look at the full form interview. Im quite happy for people to see, you know, the labour pa rtys happy for people to see, you know, the labour partys spokesperson on brexit unable to answer the questions. Thats not the point. We we re questions. Thats not the point. We were trying to make it shorter is the point we were trying to say, and make it more palatable. It was doctored, wasnt it . It was edited. It was edited. 0bviously edited. Doctored, wasnt it . It was edited. It was edited. Obviously edited. 0k, so it was edited. Obviously edited. Ok, so we are it was edited. Obviously edited. Ok, so we are disagreeing on the language eye amusing, is that what were language eye amusing, is that what were doing . Edited. It matters. It matters. Because the words you are using have a connotation. In the point i am saying is that it was obvious, it was obviously edited because it had a music soundtrack, it had text overlays. The idea that somehow people couldnt see that this was, as they say, a shorter form video, adjusted. Thats not a credible position to put forward. The thing is, from your point of view as well, the election is just about to start. And this is what you are having to talk about. You are having to talk about people saying very insensitive things over grenfell, you are talking about videos that have been edited, this isa videos that have been edited, this is a question of trust, isnt it . How when you go and stand in front of voters how do they trust you . The point we will be making through this election is that they can, they can look at what we have achieved. They can look at what the premise as achieved in renegotiating the deal. If they want to ask who they trust to be able to negotiate with the eu, then they have got a model there a Prime Minister who negotiated the deal. Everyone said he could negotiated. We will put that to the house of commons. What we would like isa house of commons. What we would like is a working majority so that can be delivered and we can be up by the 3ist delivered and we can be up by the 31st of october. 0r delivered and we can be up by the 31st of october. Or they can say do they trust this position from the labour party, which relies on a renegotiation which the eu have already said is unrealistic, relies ona already said is unrealistic, relies on a second referendum which hasnt been agreed, will almost certainly trigger a second referendum on Scottish Independence and people will choose between the two. I am very clear that our proposition, a deal that sony be negotiated, it could be through by the end of january, will be a more palatable one than the labour party. Singer dua lipa gives her view on pressures affecting a generationm can be so fun to share things but it is almost a breeding ground for things like hate. Morning sunshine will be replaced by rain clouds later. Join me for the full forecast here on breakfast. 0ur headlines today as parliament closes down for the election a series of apologies from the conservatives over grenfell and a doctored video they had both realised they had caused hurt and that is why they have apologised. I think we have seen have apologised. I think we have seen from the wedding are both apologies they realise they have caused distress and hurtand realise they have caused distress and hurt and they have apologised. Now we have a chat with chris mason, who is outside number 10. James cleverly was talking about a series of apologies the party is making. Lets be clear. It has been a horror show for the conservatives. They will attempt to change the record today with the official launch in the West Midlands this evening after Boris Johnson launch in the West Midlands this evening after borisjohnson has been to see the queen at Buckingham Palace in a couple of hours. It is apology after apology after apology. You got a sense with the tone of James Cleverleys exchanges with louise about how bumpy it has been. Two of the politicians having to apologise for remarks about Grenfell Tower. Andrew bridging went on the radio last night afterJacob Rees Mogg had been on the radio earlier to acknowledge that Jacob Rees Mogg had been clumsy in his use of language, implying that perhaps it would have been common sense for those caught up in the Grenfell Tower fire to have left it despite instructions from the fibre day to stay put. It was claimed Jacob Rees Mogg was more clever as a figure of authority and it was more important that clever people were in government. Another apology this morning. Into the mix, we have got a conservative mp, former mp, now a candidate, openly critical, johnny mercer, of the ducted video that conservatives put out yesterday following an interview that keir starmer, the labour brexit spokesman gave yesterday morning. Everywhere you look, the conservatives are apologising. They will hope that todayis apologising. They will hope that today is rather better than the last 24 hours. Stay where you are. Lets hear what James Cleverley had to say. It is so obvious it is edited. There are text overlays and a music soundtrack. Completely obvious it is a light hearted, humorous, shorter form video. That is completely obvious. As we say, we have also posted, i posted in the morning, only a few minutes after the interview concluded, their link to the full form interview. I am quite happy for people to go and look. We are quickly editing app to show you a little piece of it. Chris, during the Election Campaign, there will be days when other parties will be on the front of that. On a day like today when the conservative party in so much trouble in getting a lot of grief with what they had started the campaign with the other parties can sit back, cant they . They probably can. We will get ebb and flow during the next five weeks at parties will have their set piece days, where they hope to talk about what they see as their best hand to show to the electorate and other days where events take over. We have seen days where events take over. We have seen is that the conservatives in the last 24 hours in what will happen in those instances is the other parties will hold off from saying whatever it is they want to saying whatever it is they want to say and just leave their rivals to baskin say and just leave their rivals to bask in the awkwardness, if you like, other bumpy day of headlines. What you can be certain of in the context of a five Week Campaign is that all of the big parties will have these moments come at the little ones will no doubt as well because that is the nature of these campaigns. Stuff happens. Parties had their grids and announcements, the conservatives big picture later on today talking about getting brexit done, to borrow their slogan, for instance. They will have those moments but there will also be events coming along. That is why whatever they set out trying to achieve at the start do not always turn out as the parties might hope. Events, dear boy, events. A mans gone on trial in new zealand accused of murdering a british backpacker after they met on a dating website. The body of 22 year old Grace Millane was found in woodland on the outskirts of auckland last december. 0ur correspondent phil mercer was in court. There is no doubt, according to the prosecution and defence that Grace Millane, a backpacker from prosecution and defence that Grace Millane, a backpackerfrom essex, died inside a City Centre Apartment last year, here in auckland. The prosecution is alleging the 27 year old defendant, who we cannot name for legal reasons, deliberately strangled the young backpacker and, afterwards, disposed of her body in a shallow grave in rainforest on the outskirts of the city. Their defence has a very different story to tell. It believes the young backpacker died accidentally as a result of a sex game that went wrong. It believes the defendant, as i say, 27 years of age, tried to conceal the body because he believed his account of that night simply would not be believed. Thank you for bringing us up believed. Thank you for bringing us up to date. Dozens of Police Officers have been attacked with fireworks and bricks during a bonfire night disturbance in leeds. Emergency services in other parts of the country were also targetted, on one of the busiest nights of the year. Andy moore reports. Stop come on, everyone out. When she talks about issues facing higher generation, many will pay attention. She described social media as a breeding ground for hate. I spoke to her about her rapid rise to fame. 0h, dua lipa, its lovely to see you here on bbc breakfast. I know youre extremely busy, youve got a new single out. Ido, yeah. How does that feel . So exciting, just kind of Getting Started again. I dont know, ive just been waiting for this moment for so long, ive been writing for such a while. Im all good already. So moved on its scary. Im not where you left me at all. Its called dont start now, and it does sound, when you listen to the lyrics, as many of your lyrics do, deeply personal is it . Yeah. Is it about some person, a particular person . I think when i, you know, with all my songs i dont really know any different. Its really about finding happiness and being confident in that and not allowing anyone to take that away from you. If you dont want to see me dancing with somebody. If you want to believe that anything could stop me. It says, arent the guy who tried to hurt me with the words goodbye . Does that person know who they are . Maybe what do you think theyll make of iat when they hear it . Its. You know, its a song. I guess, for me, the way i like to think about it is like i work on these songs and once theyre out into the world they no longer belong to me. So whatever they want to make of it, its up to them, i think art is subjective. I think some people will also want to pretend its about them. Dont show up, dont come out. Dont start caring bout me now. Walk away, you know how. Dont start caring about me now. You have had an incredible sort of experience over the last three or four years, havent you . I mean, kind of meteoric rise, how does it feel being part of that . My goodness, its scary, when you say it like that, its really exciting. Everything thats happened has been such a gift, ive been able to travel the world, and ive been able to tour and to see fans all over and experience crowds that i never thought i would ever experience before, and you know, these are things i would always dream of as a kid, and to get to live these moments is magic in the truest form. Make some noise dont show up, dont come out. Dont start caring bout me now. Walk away, you know how. Dont start caring bout me now. So when does the album actually come out, then . Next year. My goodness me, you really keep them on tenterhooks yeah, but we have lots of stuff coming out until then, im going to keep putting music out. Tell us, when you make your music, you write, you write, you write. When do you know that is a great song . Its always after the session, when i get the chance to really live with the song for a bit. If i keep wanting to play it back and i keep wanting to go back to it and listen to it, then i know i feel like im onto something. When do you play it to your mum and dad . Really quickly, actually. I start sending them demos very early on, because they all have different opinions. Ifeel like if i get like a broader kind of yes all over, especially my little brother and sister, then i feel like its a good one. And youve got their initials tattooed. . Lets have a look at these. Yeah, ive got r and g. It sounds to me like youre the one behind is that is controlling this, are you the controller . I dont know, control freak. I didnt say that i know, but i say it i keep pushing forward but he keeps pulling me backwards. Talk to us about the videos as well, because ive watched so many of them, and first of all, most of them are really kind of joyous, fun, also a lot about girl power. Is that important to you . Yeah, i guess so. I never really think about it in that way, itjust kind of is. All my closest friends are all girls that ive grown up with from school. I always feel like ive thrived around Feminine Energy, ive always felt my strongest around girls. Even directors i work with, its like, 0k, how many girls do you want in it . Its like natural for them to ask me about the girls, cos its just how i like it. Being a girl, you get understood more by girls. If you talk to me a little bit more about social media, are you worried by some of the stuff you see there . What you do, do you ignore it . What do you do . It really depends. Some days, i dont read into the comments. Some days, maybe i feel a little bit more vulnerable, and i dive in, and i almost go looking for things that i dont want to see. I think its definitely human nature, i dont want to hide that, and i definitely dont want to hide that because i want people to hear that were all human and we go through the same thing. And social media can be such an amazing tool, and it can be so fun to share things. But at the same time it can really. Its like almost a breeding ground for, like, hate and anxiety, and people feel like they can say things because theyre hiding behind a computer screen, and i think, for me, its important to use social media in like bite sizes. Apparently, you literally diarise i must do shopping now, is that really true . Im crazy with my calendar, i feel like thats how i feel very much in control of my life. But its funny, because my parents have mentioned that even when it was little they would find little to do lists around the house. Tidy up my room at this time, revise at this time, chill time at this or like i would plan everything. So i feel like thats definitely served me quite well now in myjob. Tell us a bit about your down time. Will you put it in in the diary . Yeah, i have to, i have to, so i can, you know, make the most of my work time and then make the most of the time that i have free, you know, with my friends, and sometimes after a busy work day, im like, god, ijust want to be at home on my own and not do anything and just watch gogglebox or something but for most of it, the second i walk through the door, im on the phone to my friends im like, right, im cooking dinner, coming over . 0h, brilliant. Have everyone round. What are you cooking . Well, do you know what . I make a really good seafood paella. Do you . this is sophisticated and you wrote your first song when you were six or something . Well, it was like. I say write my first song, it was more like a made up song that i made at home with my parents, i made the song for my mum. And it was in albanian, and its basically, when i grow up, can i borrow your skirt . When i grow up, can i borrow your shoes . I be as pretty as you . Basically that was the whole song. And still to this day, when we are at family get togethers, my parents love to remind me of that song, and we all still sing it. Can you still sing it . Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was in albanian, and you wanted to come back to the uk, didnt you, specifically because you wanted to go to a particular drama school . Yeah, but i was born and raised in london, and i actually made the song when i was in london, but in albanian because my parents always spoke albanian, i feel like they never let me forget my roots and where im from, and so we always spoke albanian at home. Tell us what dua means in albanian. It means love. I guess, when i was younger, i didnt really appreciate my name as much as i guess i do now, because especially when i was living in london, i was like, i just want a normal name. What did you want to be called . I dont know, hannah or sarah or ella, you know. Its lovely, lovely to meet you, thank you very much indeed, best of luck with it. Thank you so much. I cant believe youve got everyone on this long waiting, but they will appreciate it, thank you so much. Thank you. Dua lipa, talking to me about all things, including the toxicity of social media. They are not many programmes when you can go from an interview with a politician to an interview with a politician to an interview with a politician to an interview with dua lipa. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Very good morning to you. A cold but bright start. In the north of england temperatures had been close to freezing. In the last ever we are still seen temperatures around freezing, as far south as woburn. Whilst there is sunshine at the moment it will be a day of change. 0n the radar, showers close to the east coast. The ones in the west are more of interest. In the west, the showers will develop more widely into the afternoon and nudge their way north and eastwards. Some northern and eastern parts will stay dry and bright through daylight hours, continuing with the sunshine. Wherever you are, it will be cold. At four oclock, the school pick up my temperature is around four to 6 degrees. Turning letter to southern parts of scotland. Still showers around in Northern Ireland and turning damper into the midlands. Some parts of Eastern England will stay dry. Heavier showers in the rash is set to push back in to the south west and parts of wales. The showers will merge into longer spells of rain and pushed the wind northwards. To the south, some clear skies developing. For most, temperatures not as low as they were this morning as we start tomorrow morning. A few wintry showers in scotland. Thundery showers in the south. We have to watch where this area of brain lands up. Be somewhere across midlands and north wales. Where it does sit is where we see persistent rain through the day to bring a risk of flooding. Showers in scotla nd bring a risk of flooding. Showers in scotland are wintry and the showers along the coast thundery. Temperatures still in single figures. The rain band will be on the move. Confined to east anglia and the south east as we start friday morning. For most of you it will be a bright start. Rain lingering the south east midlands. Further north and west some good sunny spells to take you through friday. If anything, temperatures down a little bit from what we saw on thursday. A frosty night to take it into the start of the weekend. Saturday, any early sunshine moving away. We could see snow on the hills in particular across Northern England, north wales and in scotland. Foremost, wet and windy weather will develop through the day. For all, it weather will develop through the day. Forall, it will weather will develop through the day. For all, it will be fairly chilly with temperatures in single figures. Just to remind you, october was chilly with temperatures just below average. That fits into the global picture. Blue shows temperatures below average and the red shows temperatures above average. Skewed by the polar regions. According to the eu Climate Change service, 0ctober globally was the warmest on record. Maybe cold here at times but across the rest of the globe temperatures above average yet again. You mentioned snow a little earlier, didnt you . I am very sorry, i seem to have lost my talk back. That is a very good way of not answering the question. Politicians could try that one. That is a great way of getting out ofa that is a great way of getting out of a question. As weve been discussing this morning, the conservatives have had a very rocky start to their Election Campaign with three of their politicians apologising for a variety of mistakes. Parliament was dissolved at one minute past midnight. Here to help us minute past midnight. Here to help us understand that process is an s. It has been a fun start to the Election Campaign for most of the parties. Parliament is dissolved. What does that mean . Did morning to you by the way. What the dissolution of parliament means is there are no mps any more. All 650 seats in the house of commons are considered to be vacant now until polling day on december the 12th. People who were mps until last night cannot refer to themselves as such. There are some restrictions on what the government and what Civil Servants can do until the election has taken place. Do they still get paid . They do. Mps will still receive a salary up to polling day. If some mps had additional parliamentary responsibilities, like sitting on a select committee, that additional pa rt select committee, that additional part of their salary has now ended because parliament has dissolved. There are politicians who still have work to do, like government ministers. They obviously had to get on that whilst campaigning at the same time. That is right. It is important to remember that even during the period running up to an election, all government ministers to remain in post. Essentially there has to be a government, somebody has to be in charge and they will continue until a new government is formed after the election. Some people might have heard of the wash out period. That is trying to get legislation through in the last few days before the dissolution. Usually, if he had had a parliament that has lasted five years, if there are bills that are almost through their parliamentary stages but not quite, the government in agreement with other Political Parties might try to get them through said they dont fall at the end of the parliament. The issue with this election is this session of parliament only began a couple of weeks ago when we had the queens speech and of the bills introduced by the government since then, they have got not very far in their passage at all. That means they cannot really be rushed through and say most of the bills introduced by the government in the last few weeks will fall and if any new government wa nts to will fall and if any new government wants to pick up after the election they will have to start right from they will have to start right from the beginning. So they might com pletely the beginning. So they might completely disappear, depend on what happens after the general election. The Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament are still sitting. Are they unaffected by the general election in that regard . The focus of the general election is on the Uk Parliament in westminster. That is the only thing that has been dissolved. When does everything return to normal . We have a general election on december the 12th and we learn what happens on december the 13th. Christmas is the following week. Depending on who is in majority, there might even be a Hung Parliament situation, when do jobs start to be done again . Some ministers will still be in charge. In terms of what parliament is doing, the current government has said it would Like Parliament to return on the 16th of december, a few days after the election. Ultimately, the day when parliament returns will be issued by royal proclamation, on the advice of the new government. Be up to whoever ta kes new government. Be up to whoever takes charge after december the 12th. The government has said they would like to see parliament returned no later than the 23rd of december. Thank you for filling in some of those answers. 414 years after di force tried and parliament no longer exists for a while. Time now for the news, travel and weather where you are. It has been a cold hard with some frost in Northern England and scotland. For many, temperatures will struggle. They will be below average and there is some rain in the forecast. That is coming from the forecast. That is coming from the west. Initially showery rain in the west. Initially showery rain in the north west, before heavier rain spreads in later. To the east, particularly east anglia and the south east, driest and brightest conditions for longest. But the temperatures, five to eight or nine. Perhaps 10 in the far south of england. Tonight further rain moves into the uk with some snow over the Higher Ground of scotland into thursday morning and over night temperatures three or four. Elsewhere about five or seven. Thursday will see more rain, particularly in north wales, Northern England and Eastern England. North and south a mixture of sunny spells and showers.
