Staying with north london news where tottenham and lazio are in talks about the potential sale of goalkeeper hugo lloris. The former Club Captains future has been under much scrutiny after he expressed a desire to leave earlier this summer. He was left out of the clubs Pre Season Tours and the 2 2 draw against brentford which opened spurs premier League Campaign last weekend. Lloris still has one year left on his contract so tottenham would be entitled to a transfer fee. Harry maguires potential move from Manchester United to west ham is off though. The defender is now intent on staying and fighting for a place in the starting eleven. He was stripped of the captaincy before the start of this season after finding fewer playing opportunities. Last seasons treble winners Manchester City will look to add yet another trophy to their collection later when they take on sevilla in the super cup in athens. Each season this fixture sees the Champions League holders face the Europa League winners. We are here with the field, we are hungry enough to compete and especially to challenge ourselves to prove ourselves. If someone wants to take our three crowns, hopefully they can fight against us to take it, so we are still going to defend this season. More on that story across the bbc sport website. I will be back later. A shortfall in the rate of inflation. Prices are still increasing. The rate at which prices rise has dropped to 6. 8 in the year july. That is down 7. 9 injune. Last october the figure was ii. I . The drop was driven by lower prices for things like electricity and gas. But there are some things which are still rising at a rapid rate like the cost of a flight, which is up by almost 30 in the year on year comparison. Our chief economics correspondent, Dharshini David has more. It is the case that inflation has slowed quite considerably and the latest month. Its largely down to the fact that Energy Prices are quite as tight as they were because of the way that a is put in the uk. Just to correct, it still the case that houses up and down the country will be feeling the pain because wages arent overtaking inflation just as yet. It may be the case next month, we may find out theres a Turning Point for the at theres a Turning Point for the at the moment many households are going to be feeling the pain. A lot of thatis to be feeling the pain. A lot of that is coming through food prices because even though that rate has lowered what we are seeing is food prices still on average still 15 up from where they were a year ago. Still the case that costs are rising for manufacturers of food for that that means they will pass it on to customers. Its notjust about that. Weve also got whats called services inflation. The likes of hotels, restaurants putting up their prices by as much as 10 . Part of thatis prices by as much as 10 . Part of that is to do with a straight picture in the uk of some who find it hard to make ends meet as those basics get more expensive. Some have got savings stashed away for the pandemic time or perhaps bigger wage risers that he could use to finance spending on Like Services for as with the Bank Of England looks at closely and thats why it is expected they can raise rates once again come september. What we are seeing at the moment is the fact that inflation and has been stubborn in the uk, much more so than in many other countries france, germany, the us. We are looking at a picture here with the Bank Of England is having to engineer quite deliberately a slowdown in consumer spending. It does not by pushing up Interest Rates. Over half of households with the mortgage wouldve felt the pain from higher Interest Rates and many hundreds of thousands more will feel it in the coming months. The jury in the trial of nurse lucy letby has been continuing its deliberations at Manchester Crown court. Ms letby is accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill 10 others at the countess of chester hospital, Betweenjune 2015 and june 2016. She denies all the charges. Lucy grey has sent this update from Manchester Crown court. The jury have been deliberating for more than 100 hours at Manchester Crown court. Last week the judge gave them a majority direction, meaning he would accept verdicts if ten out of 11 jurors were agreed. There has been a lot of evidence for them to talk through. The trial has been going on ten months now and they were given ipads at the start of the trial because they knew there would be so much evidence for them to sift through, thousands and thousands of pages of evidence. Lucy letby, a 33 year old nurse originally from hereford is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder ten others during her time on the Neonatal Unit at the countess of chester hospital. The time referred to is Betweenjune 2015 and june 2016. The Neonatal Unit is where babies would be taken if they were sick or premature, they would go there soon after birth. It is the prosecutions case, they claim she attacked these babies in a variety of ways, by injecting them with insulin, using that as a poison, or injecting them with air, by overfeeding them, or by tampering with their Feeding Tubes or in some cases by inflicting physical trauma. They said the one thing that links these instances, these deaths and near fatal collapses, was that lucy letby was on shift at the time. Lucy letby denied all the charges against her. She was in court for 1h days giving evidence. Her defence is that this could have happened through natural occurrences. She also talked about the Neonatal Unit saying it was overstretched and understaffed. She talked about serious failings in the unit itself. Her parents, lucy letby s parents have been in court throughout the case over the last ten months, and also the families of the 17 babies have been here. They have been in court here in manchester but have also been able to watch remotely. They have sat through the harrowing details over the last ten months and now they wait for those verdicts to come back. The uk formerjustice secretary, sir robert buckland, hasjoined calls for a Public Inquiry into the case of a man who spent 17 years in prison for a rape he did not commit. Andy malkinson had his conviction quashed last month. It has since emerged the police and prosecutors both had dna evidence that may have exonerated him five years into his sentence. Joe inwood reports. When Andy Malkinson walked out of court last month, he was finally free. I am not a liar. I am not in denial. But i will tell you who is. He was also furious with the police force responsible for his wrongful conviction. Greater Manchester Police are liars and they are in denial. In 2004, he was convicted of a violent rape, purely on the basis of witness identification. There was no dna linking Andy Malkinson to the scene of the crime, but there was the dna of another unknown man on a piece of clothing. The files seen by the bbc reveal that as far back as 2009, greater Manchester Police knew this, as Andy Malkinson told bbc newsnight. I could have been out eight years before i was, yeah. If someone had just looked at that match on the database, if someone had trawled the database. If, well, i have to say, the ccrc had the opportunity back in 2010. They failed. The ccrc is the criminal case review commission, the body tasked with investigating miscarriages ofjustice. In 2012, they turned down his request for an appeal. Its thought cost was a factor. Completely dropped the ball. And the human cost of that for andy, for his family. But also, lets not forget for the victim, who 20 years later is being retraumatized by all this having to come up again as part of andys fight to have the truth come out. All of that could have been spared if the commission had done theirjob properly. They need to apologize. They need to do a full internal investigation and find out what went wrong. Theyre not doing so. And for that reason, their chairs position is untenable. She needs to resign. For andy, the whole system needs reform. The Justice System in the uk, england, is a big mess. Theres no accountability to the police. To the cps. The ccrc is ineffective. If it looks like justice is being done, then thats good enough for them. They dont care about the integrity of the convictions. Both police and prosecutors have previously apologized to Andy Malkinson, while the cps said they did disclose the evidence to his lawyers. The ccrc have been approached for comment. Andy malkinson finally has freedom, but its come at a terrible price. It seems if the system had worked, it could also have come much
