And israel had agreed on a plan to allow humanitarian aid into gaza. In gaza, un agencies have warned of a deepening humanitarian crisis. More than 2,800 people have been killed in israeli air strikes. Hamas, which is designated as a Terrorist Organisation by governments including the uk and us, says it fired a barrage of rockets atjerusalem and tel aviv overnight, with sirens sending people to bomb shelters. At the united nations, a Draft Resolution on israel and gaza failed to pass the security council. Western nations voted against it because it failed to condemn hamas. This is the scene across gaza right now. There across gaza right now. Is nervousness as the humanitarian there is nervousness as the humanitarian situation gets worse. Many thousands of people making the journey from the north of gaza to the south, putting further pressure on already limited infrastructure. Our middle east correspondent Yolande Knell has the latest. Israel says it is hitting hamas targets as barrages of rockets are still fired from gaza. But a world leader is heading this way. On wednesday, President Biden will visit israel. He is coming here at a critical moment for israel, for the region and for the world. With its military might already on show nearby, the us is worried that events here could spiral into a regional crisis. Overnight, israel was also fighting against powerful hezbollah militants in lebanon. It welcomes the us support. Translation the visit of the president of the United States has strategic importance, for the entire middle east and influence in that the most seniorfigure in the United States is coming to israel at a time of war, getting a review of the war situation. Overnight, israel was also fighting against powerful hezbollah there is also the Hostage Crisis to discuss, with hamas now saying 250 people are being held in gaza. It is believed they include americans and maybe some of the ten british nationals still missing. The bbc doesnt generally publish hostage videos, but the family agreed pictures from the video could be shown. And the clock is ticking to come up with plans to alleviate the immense suffering of ordinary palestinians. Israel put gaza under siege and told one Million People to evacuate from the north to the south. This un school is now a shelter. There are a severe shortages of water and food. The un says the situation is desperate. We have seen about a Million People move from the north to the south due to the possible threat of israeli intervention in the north arising out of the taking of those hostages. We need to get aid to those people for two reasons. Number one, to make their movements safe to where they want to go, voluntarily. And two, to sustain them while they are there. The hope is that aid can be brought in through egypts rafah crossing on gazas southern border. Already lorry loads are ready to enter. And on the other side there are crowds of palestinians with foreign passports, including british families, waiting to exit. Meanwhile, israel continues its plans for a wider operation, which it says will eliminate hamas. Its forces are expected to launch a Ground Offensive in gaza soon. The stakes forjoe biden s trip couldnt be higher. Yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. Well take you live inside gaza with our correspondent there, in a moment, but first live to southern israel and our chief International Correspondent lyse doucet. Lets talk first of all about President Biden s visit tomorrow. What significance will that have, and how will that be seen there . Hugely significant. It will go down very well here in israel. It will also go down well in the arab world. It comes after the us stop diplomat Antony BlinkenMade A Lightning Tour on a six capital in four days, seeing all the arab leaders, who can have a say and to matter when it comes to finding a way out of this crisis. He came back to israel with the message that everywhere he went, arab leaders told him, you have to find a way to protect the civilians in gaza, to get aid inside the gaza strip. Antony blinken said they were working on that. It suggests that there is some optimism, that by the time President Biden lands, they were able to report some progress on that front. President biden knows very well that it is so important notjust very well that it is so important not just to do very well that it is so important notjust to do something, and america is doing a lot, sending significant military, financial and moral support to israel, and emphasising its right to defend itself. But it is also telling israel it has to respect the rules of war to protect civilians. Joe biden will want to say that directly come in person, to the Prime Minister of israel, two Israeli Military leaders, and also to the arab leaders that he will meet in jordan. He also wants to find out what is happening with the hostages. 199 hostages, we were told yesterday. An astonishing number. They include 13 nationalities, besides israelis, including americans. This perhaps answers the question, but the visit by President Biden could account for the delay in the Ground Offensive. There are a number of other reasons one would assume, but with 300,000 troops massed on the border, there are a lot of questions about why that offensive has not begun already. Has not begun already. Well, the Israeli Defence has not begun already. Well, the Israeli Defence spokesperson has not begun already. Well, the| Israeli Defence spokesperson this morning said you are all talking about a Ground Offensive, we may do something different. Of course, surprise is an important part of a military operation. Yes, they have more than 300,000 troops, as well as heavy artillery and armour that has been massed at the border for many days. If they keep them there too long, it could have an impact on their state of readiness, on their morale. But we do know that they have been carrying out very limited raids into gaza, reconnaissance missions, to try to get more intelligence. We understand about where the hostages may be, where the hamas infrastructure is. It is widely assumed, based on what we see and hear, and even some statements by the Israeli Military and politicians, that that is in their planning, but we dont know the timing. Yes, this huge push by israel s best friends to get them to do everything possible, to be seen to be protecting civilians, also there is a matter of weather. It rained here over the past few days, and that does matter in war. We simply do not know. What we do know is that the bombardment continues, even in the south of the gaza strip, where israel had ordered palestinians to move there. In the past few minutes, one of our reporters in gaza said there has been another bombing. We are still gathering the information, but there are already reports that there could be significant casualties and we will soon hear from be significant casualties and we will soon hearfrom our reporters on the ground, that one passage in and out of gaza, which remains shut. Yes, and we know there is a potential for this to open up on many fronts, and iran s Foreign Minister said israel will not be allowed to act in the gaza strip without consequences, warning of pre emptive action in the coming hours. How is that being seen . Everyone has an interest in this fight. Everyone has allies in this fight. Everyone has allies in this fight. Iran is significant with its connection to hamas, and also to islamichhad, and extreme armed groups operating in gaza. Its chief proxy in the region, his brother, has been racking up tensions along israel s northern border. His brother. Iran likes to see itself as a Standard Bearer for muslims worldwide, including the palestinians. It can be seen to be standing idly by in the midst of these horrific images. Palestinian casualties and suffering, and that is in gaza but also in the occupied west bank. When this crisis began 11 days ago it was widely assumed that iran and lebanon did not want to get drawn into another conflict. Iran has been trying to mend fences with its arch rivals, including saudi arabia, but here it finds itself slowly inching towards greater involvement. In fact, the Foreign Minister of iran said it could even take pre emptive action. This is the kind of intense Military Activity that has such a danger of accidental attacks, missions gone wrong, atrocities. In so many wars it is the unexpected that causes the biggest damage and the biggest blowback. As always, really good to have your assessment. Thank you for being with us. Our correspondent Rushdi Abu Alouf is in the city of khan younis in the Southern Area of the gaza strip. He has been telling us about the situation on the ground. The local authority described situation on the ground. The local authority described the situation on the ground. The local authority described the situation l authority described the situation with a shortage of almost every essential needs for the people. Water is in severe shortage. Only this morning a couple of trucks were secured from the south in gaza city, but this is not enough at all for over1 Million People, who are desperate to get any sort of water. Here in the hospital, this is the second largest medical centre. It used to serve 400,000 people, which is the original people who live in this area. Now, theres 600,000 more. So over a Million People are getting their medical service out of this small, relatively small hospital, and now they are threatening to, not threaten, they said they have only an amount of food that can run to the end of this day, and they said they are going out of service by midnight. There are problems to secure any sort of feel. I had from gas stations if there is any late. I had from companies. So they are digging, they are trying to find any sort of food just to give it to the hospital. They might be able to secure a little bit of fuel, as long as it is coming and it is available, they should be functioning. But even function, they said we are functioning only 30 , which is the life saving treatment for people. All nonessential treatment, any sort of surgery that is not necessarily life saving, people are not getting this treatment. So what about the people who have to do Kidney Dialysis . What about people suffering from other diseases not related to the war . So the situation is really catastrophic in this hospital, and the hospital also has to take some of the refugees who came to the area. There are families around me, sitting on the ground. Very minimum, a little bit of water and a little bit of food in this place. So this city is exhausted by the shortage of everything, and by the shortage of everything, and by the number of people who are coming to this city as a shelter after they were forced to flee their homes in the north and in gaza city. And now they have to deal with the fuel shortages, and they believe this hospital might go out of service after 12 hours. Diplomatic click map turkey says there will be a peace summit in egypt. King abdullah ofjordan is in berlin and held talks with chancellor scholz. He stated that as long as a political solution is not found for the israel palestine issue, the cycle of violence will continue. Hundreds of thousands have no access to food, water, electricity, and other basic services. This is unacceptable on all levels, legal and human. This year is already the bloodiest year for palestinians and israelis in recent memory. It will get much worse unless we stop this war and the get much worse unless we stop this warand the human get much worse unless we stop this war and the Human Catastrophe it is creating, and stop it we must. We must all stand against all forms of violence, and with its victims, no matter their identity, nationality, or religion. Your excellency, the whole region is at the brink of falling into the abyss and this new cycle of death and destruction is pushing us towards this. Enough is enough, we cannot continue the cycle of violence every single year. Unless there is a political horizon that brings israelis and palestinians together, that then allows israelis and arabs to come together, this will continue to be a cycle of violence that none of us can afford. Another story developing today Indias Supreme Court has ruled against petitions seeking to legalise Same Sex Marriage. The government, led by the hindu nationalist bjp, and religious leaders have been strongly opposed to same sex unions, saying they are against indian culture. A five judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by the chiefjustice of india heard arguments in the case back in april. Earlier i spoke to our south asia correspondent, samira hussain. It was a really nuanced decision in which the Supreme Courtjustices were unanimous in saying they believe that Same Sex Marriage should be allowed but it was not within the scope of what the Supreme Court could do that legalising Same Sex Marriage was something that had to be done by parliament. What it did say is that, look, marriage not protected under the constitution but being free from any sort of sexual discrimination is something that is protected in the constitution and because married couples are able to get a whole bunch of benefits, like tax breaks and pension benefits, and making medical decisions for their partners, that is something that same sex couples are not able to avail themselves of. So what the Supreme Court has said is that you need to create a Parliamentary Committee and regulate and sort of find ways to make sure youre not in violation of their rights to not be disconnected against. That was the view very much from the legislators and lawmakers, but there was a rare show of unity by indias main religious groups who are also arguing against same sex unions. Yes, indeed. For them it was, look, a marriage is very much between a man and a woman and it needs to be heterosexual. It is really rare to see unity among the main religious groups here in india, but there it w
