Would happen soon. With more, heres our correspondent wyre davies from jerusalem, and a warning, you may find parts of his report distressing. The human toll in gaza is mounting. These casualties brought to the al aqsa hospital in central gaza are outside the zone from which israel had told civilians to flee. Its not known from where the victims came, but many of the dead and injured are children. Some images, too distressing to broadcast, show the bodies of at least a dozen children. Translation we have been here since the Crack Of Dawn L and the bodies have completely filled the hospital yard. This is in addition to the bodies in refrigerators which are full. We dont have enough shrouds for the dead because the numbers are huge. Israeli air strikes in response to the massacres of october 7th are against what it calls strategic hamas targets. They have left parts of the gaza strip looking like a wasteland. Such bombing, say palestinians, is indiscriminate by its very nature, resulting in thousands of casualties. No ones getting out of gaza for now. But through the border with egypt today, more than a dozen aid trucks did get in carrying basic food and medical supplies, after an initial transfer of 20 truckloads yesterday. But the un says its nowhere near the 500 trucks daily needed to sustain a population of more than two million. 30 , according to our sources, of the infrastructure is already destroyed. The un says that many who fled south to escape israeli bombing are now heading back to homes in Northern Gaza towards the shelling, so dire is the humanitarian situation. Some people will die if they dont get insulin on a regular basis. There are 50,000 pregnant women in gaza. Water is absolutely necessary to keep them alive. But the situation is set to worsen. Thousands of israeli troops, tanks and heavy armour are preparing for a full scale Ground Offensive in gaza once bombing from the air achieves its objective. Its what israel says it has to do if hamas is to be crushed. I have no doubt that israel will need to go in on the ground to be able to effectively hurt and undermine and weaken hamas, but also to be able to project power in this region and show the world and its other adversaries that are watching that we have capabilities. And i think its a matter of day or days until that happens. But israel knows a Land Invasion of gaza could trigger conflict in the wider region. In the Palestinian West Bank city ofjenin, israel says it hit a hamas cell preparing for an attack. After cross border skirmishes, too, in southern lebanon, a warning from israels Prime Minister to hezbollah militia and their sponsors, iran, not to get involved. If hezbollah decides to enter the war, theyll be making the biggest mistake of their lives and hit with unimaginable force, said the Prime Minister, talking to Israeli Soldiers in the north today. One factor mr netanyahu cant control is the fate of more than 200 israeli and International Hostages held by hamas in gaza, whose families fear an israeli invasion may put their lives in further danger. Wyre davies, bbc news, jerusalem. As weve been reporting, a dire humanitarian crisis is unfolding in gaza as israels war on hamas continues. 0ur correspondent Rushdi Abualouf and his family have been displaced four times in gaza in the last two weeks. Heres his assessment of the situation on the ground, from an aid camp in the city of khan younis, in the south of the territory. About 2,000 families living in these tents. They are people displaced from the Northern Gaza. This is, a camp has been built by the unrwa. I was speaking to the families here. They said they are struggling to find water. They are struggling to find food. They are struggling to find a bathroom. They said the bathroom here is a real challenge. They said security, also, is a real challenge because, as you know, hamas has been under really heavy attack by israel for the last two weeks or so, so there is no police around the area to maintain law and order, a few problems here, social problems in the area. But those people, they said, we have been given very little food, very little water, very Little Medicine to the people who are in need for this. This is an example of how 700,000 people, who are displaced from the north, are living in a very difficult condition in gaza city. World leaders are stepping up their diplomatic efforts to ease the conflict. On sunday, President Biden spoke to pope francis about the aid efforts, working towards peace and the need to prevent a regional escalation of the conflict. Mr biden also held two phone calls with israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on sunday. The white house says the two leaders agreed there would be a continuous flow of assistance into gaza. Mr biden also thanked mr netanyahu for his assistance in the release of two us hostages on friday. The leaders of the us, uk, canada, france, germany, and italy spoke on sunday. And several european leaders are expected in israel this week, including french president Emmanuel Macron. A new week begins with so much uncertainty of what is ahead in gaza. Now lets speak to ian parmeter, a Research Scholar at the centre for arab and islamic studies at the Australian National university in canberra. He was also a former australian ambassador to lebanon. Its great to get your insight into whats happening at the moment. Wejust into whats happening at the moment. We just talked about the diplomacy on the part of the diplomacy on the part of the us president , it Emmanuel Macron is due in israel tomorrow. Your thoughts on the diplomatic efforts at the moment. Diplomatic efforts at the moment diplomatic efforts at the moment. ,. , moment. Starting with President Biden, i think moment. Starting with President Biden, i think he moment. Starting with President Biden, i think he is moment. Starting with President Biden, i think he is playing moment. Starting with President Biden, i think he is playing to. Biden, i think he is playing to a number of audiences. First of all, to israel, to express full support and condolences for israel. And hes done that very effectively, with his very quick visit after the dreadful events of the 7th of october. But as well as that, he is playing. I must also add he has promised any Military Support Israel Needs will be forthcoming. Thats been very important to israel. But as well as that, he is playing to an arab audience. He wants to ensure the arab audience. He was of course unable to meet leaders after going to israel because that visit was cancelled by the king of jordan. But he wants to convince the more moderate arabs that the United States still support them, and still supports the two state solutions. Whether he can get that message across is unclear. A third important audience is his domestic audience in the us. There obviously is a very strong domestic lobby in congress, but certainly among the people, the American People themselves. They will be looking to him to show strong support. And he seems to have done that very effectively as well. The other aspect is the visit by the european leaders. There has been several of them. We have had your Prime Minister, rishi sunak. But also weve had giorgia meloni. I think a couple of others. Yes, the german chancellor has visited as well. But the visits by president macron and mark ritter, to express condolences for israel, but at the same time, to indicate concerns for their own citizens. Mark rutte. There are several french citizens unaccounted for, and at least one is a hostage in gaza. To indicate the french government is getting as much support to israel, but also to the citizens. Of their countries. As far as australia is concerned, the number of australians in gaza keeps going up. The latest figure i have seen is 77. And our Prime Minister, anthony albanese, leaves today for a visit to washington. And the opposition here is putting a lot of pressure on him to visit israel himself on his way back from washington. At this stage, the Prime Minister has said he doesnt have plans to do that. But he may change his mind on that. There are some Australian Nationals as well who are calling out to their own people here, and saying how desperate the situation in gaza is. Can here, and saying how desperate the situation in gaza is. The situation in gaza is. Can i ask ou the situation in gaza is. Can i ask you about the situation in gaza is. The president when| asked about what would happen asked about what would happen as far as leben on and israel was concerned when fighting starts in earnest in gaza, he said, its out of my hands, and thatis said, its out of my hands, and that is very true, it is in irans hands rather than leben on. The country is going through the worst crisis it has ever experienced financially. The government is very much focused on trying to get International Support for that. As far as the south is concerned, it is ruled by hezbollah. The lebanese government has no authority over hezbollah, and if iran directs hezbollah to become involved, it will. The important thing for the lebanese, and the population will be frightened of this, they will all suffer if hezbollah becomes involved. With the fighting that occurred in 2006, there was major Infrastructure Damage done by israel, and almost certainly the same thing will happen again. Airports, bridges bond etc. We appreciate your thoughts on what is happening. Bonded etc. There wasjubilation there was jubilation as the aid trucks entered gaza. The family of a british teenager whos been missing since the hamas Attacks On October 7th has confirmed she was killed. The body of noiya sharabi, who was 16, has now been formally identified. The deaths of her 13 year old sister and mother were confirmed last week. Other families are still waiting for news of their relatives who went missing in the attack, as lucy manning reports. A few months ago, mum leanne and her daughters celebrated. Now the british israeli family are all dead, murdered by hamas. 16 year old noiya had been missing. As her british family confirmed her body had been identified, they said she was clever, sensitive, fun and full of life, a gifted student and linguist. Most importantly, an amazing granddaughter, cousin and niece. We are heartbroken she has gone, they said, but forever grateful she was here. Other relatives have been kidnapped. And in london, the demand was free the hostages. More than 200 held by hamas. Hannah and her british israeli son this was the photo hamas posted on her facebook as they kidnapped them, a gunman in the corner. I am worried sick for my mums health. I dont know how long she can survive without her insulin. I dont know how long my brother can survive without his medication. These are elderly people. There are children over there, and i want the British Government to do everything in their power. Her british israeli brother murdered, shot in the head and back. I havent grieved him yet. Ive lost my brother, but i have to do everything in my power to bring my mother home. Do you think the International Community are doing enough . I think more can be done. Its a war crime. These are innocent people. They havent harmed anyone, and these people need to be brought back. This nine month old and four year old ariel should be playing, not held in captivity. Their mum and dad also taken. Hamas filmed the kidnap. The family describe it as babies surrounded by terrorists. It is the worst nightmare. I could never imagine Something Like this could happen. The entire world should just scream. All leaders of the world should look at his face, this babys face, and its a nine month old baby who just started to crawl, he should be developing now, not being held in i dont know where, if he is underground, in a cage. I want them to put pressure for any kind of humanitarian organisation to go inside and check on them. And to release them. And you still have hope that you will see them . I have to. I have to have hope. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. The home secretary Suella Braverman will question the met Police Commissioner today about his forces response to incidents during pro palestinian demonstrations in london on saturday. The met said it had not identified any offences in a video posted on social media which showed a man chanting jihad at a rally staged by an Islamist Group which was separate from the main march. A National Helpline for modern slavery victims says its seen a surge in calls from overseas care workers since visa rules changed last year. Many reported paying huge sums to the people whod brought them to the uk. The government says it condemns foreign care workers being offered employment under false pretences. A british man who bought a pool table after winning the lottery is preparing to represent england at the sports european championships next month. He spent time during the pandemic practicing and said playing at the tournament would be one of his proudest moments. Youre live with bbc news. Argentinas president ial election will go to a run off next month, after partial results from the first round put the governing partys candidate in the lead. Economy minister sergio massa won the first round, with the outcome surprising most pollsters. It was thought mr massa, who represents the governing coalition, would be blamed for the dire state of argentinas economy, with inflation nearing 140 . Hell face second place finisher, right wing populist and Outsiderjavier Milei in the november runoff. Milei said he would fight on to win in the second round in what he called the most important election of the last 100 years. For more, lets speak to gerardo munck. Hes a professor of Political Science at the university of Southern California and joins me from los angeles. Its good to have you on the programme. Hello. Give us your take on the outcome of this president ial race. It looks like sergio massa is going head to head with javier milei. How will it play out . This headtohead with javier milei. How will it play out . How will it play out . This was a big surprise. How will it play out . This was a big surprise. Two how will it play out . This was a big surprise. Two big a big surprise. Two big surprises, there was a primary election two months ago, and in that one. It took people by surprise, javier milei is an outsider in politics, pretty far right wing politician. The governing candidate sergio massa came third in that election, relative to the others. So we didnt expect him to win, by a pretty sizeable margin, six and a half points roughly, so we have a run off between the government candidate, the minister of the economy, in a country with great economic problems, and an outsider, a candidate similar to trump and bolsonaro in brazil, that kind of a candidate. A really stark choice for the country. Its hard to understand how voters are going to make their choice. Its going to be interesting, because nearly 24 of the voters voted for the female candidate, the right wing candidate. She is currently in the government, in security. No, she used to be in the previous government. Mil no, she used to be in the previous government. All right, so she was previous government. All right, so she was in previous government. All right, so she was in the previous government. All right, so she was in the previous so she was in the previous government, on the right wing of politics. Is it assumed that those who voted for her will vote Forjavier Milei . Its vote Forjavier Milei . Its assume vote Forjavier Milei . Its assume that vote Forjavier Milei . Its assume that you vote Forjavier Milei . It s assume that you have two right wing candidates, and most, we dont know exactly how many, maybe two thirds of the said place voters would vote Forjavier Milei. 0ther right wing parties, maybe they would vote with the government, with sergio massa, so its going to be a tight race. Its hard to say who has the advantage at this point. Most of them gave conciliatory speeches this evening. Basically trying to bring in allies from the other political parties. Both of them. For
