But look closer, and you’ll see the teacup’s bobbing on deeper political currents. In case you blinked and missed it, the Australian Defence Force last week held a morning tea marking the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia – the acronym, IDAHOBIT, is just as catchy – to which staff had been encouraged to wear rainbow clothing in support of the cause. This prompted the Minister for Defence, and Morrison government’s chief cultural warrior, to ban events involving “particular clothes in celebration”.
