Stephanie Joseph/Correspondent Wicked Local Belmont organizations have teamed up with neighborhood volunteers to address a growing need for food in the community, as food insecurity rates rise across Massachusetts due to the coronavirus pandemic. Food insecurity doubled from 8% to 16% among adults in Massachusetts since 2019, according to a 2020 research brief from Boston research center Boston Indicators. Food insecurity rose to 19% for households with children. The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as diminished or uncertain access to food caused by socioeconomic factors. “As the situation continues and people don’t get their jobs back, they’ve used up their savings,” said Julie Wu, volunteer coordination lead at nonprofit Belmont Helps. “We have more people that we are serving now than we did before.”
