Belmont groups redefine Ramadan amidst pandemic

This spring, Belmont’s Islamic community is observing Ramadan through a series of socially distanced festivities, events and prayer ceremonies. Observers of the Holy Month, April 13 through May 12, are celebrating a second pandemic-marked Ramadan under COVID-19 restrictions.
The religious holiday requires healthy Muslims to abstain from consuming food and drink from sunrise to sunset. The breaking of their fast, or “Iftar,” usually welcomes large gatherings between friends and families, but Massachusetts’ indoor capacity limit of 10 individuals inhibits this tradition.
“The biggest time of celebration is when we break our fast because that’s when we like to host people and do it in a bigger community,” said Farah Abbas, founder of Belmont Muslim Friends. “This year, we are trying to figure out what we should do because some of us are vaccinated, and some of us are not.” ....

Belmont organizations have teamed up with neighborhood volunteers to address a growing need for food in the community, as food insecurity rates rise across Massachusetts due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Food insecurity doubled from 8% to 16% among adults in Massachusetts since 2019, according to a 2020 research brief from Boston research center Boston Indicators. Food insecurity rose to 19% for households with children.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as diminished or uncertain access to food caused by socioeconomic factors.
“As the situation continues and people don’t get their jobs back, they’ve used up their savings,” said Julie Wu, volunteer coordination lead at nonprofit Belmont Helps. “We have more people that we are serving now than we did before.” ....
