CANTON Two ministries have joined forces to serve as a new extension site for a Christian university. First Mennonite Church and Lighthouse Ministries at 1931 Third St. SE have entered into a partnership with Bethel University, a private liberal arts university in Mishawaka, Indiana, near the University of Notre Dame. The goal, local organizers say, is to make college more accessible, more affordable and less overwhelming for first-generation college students, people who live in the community and others who might prefer a smaller venue than a traditional campus. Canton is part of a national initiative being launched by Bethel University, said Darin Nissley, longtime executive director of Lighthouse Ministries, an after-school youth outreach.
