By Fortune Abang The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) kicked off on Jan.1, 2021. Nigeria is a signatory, as President Muhammadu Buhari signed the agreement on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the opening of the 12th Extra Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government, held in Niamey, Niger Republic. The main objectives of AfCFTA include: To create a continental market for goods and services with free movement of people and capital, as well as pave the way for creating a Customs Union. It is also expected to grow intra-African trade through better harmonisation and coordination of trade liberalisation across the continent.
