Bishop of Carlisle James Newcome provided the reference for Wiltshire vicar Robert Bailey, who was jailed for more than eight years last September for sexually abusing two girls. In the wake of the hearing, the Church of England launched a review into whether the bishop had breached official guidelines. A spokesman for the Church of England said: “Bishop James cooperated fully with the investigation which concluded there were significant errors of judgement in his handling of this matter.
