Vandals smash up abandoned St Matthew's Church in Barrow


A GROUP of trespassers who trashed a church - causing thousands of pounds worth of damage - have made their community feel unsafe .
St Matthew s Church in Highfield Road, Barrow was recently targeted by vandals, smashing windows, doors and toilets in an overnight rampage.
The church officially closed its doors in 2016, with plans currently in the works to transform the vacant building into a community hall and cafe.
Since its closure, the church has been a target for antisocial behaviour, with police confirming that the building is an area of concern .
A spokesman said: The location has been identified by the local focus team meetings as an area of concern and we are working with our partners to resolve the issues. ....

Eight new Cumbrian deacons to be ordained


The eight will be ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Carlisle, the Right Rev James Newcome.
Covid restrictions mean a smaller affair than might otherwise have been expected, but each candidate will be able to have 10 family members and supporters attending on the day.
The service at 2.30pm today (Saturday) will also be live streamed on both the Diocese of Carlisle and Carlisle Cathedral Facebook pages.
The group includes four health care professionals, a data analyst expert, a BBC Radio Cumbria presenter, a church pioneer worker and a multi-linguist. Seven will be self-supporting ministers (unsalaried) whilst the eighth will serve as a stipendiary (salaried) curate. ....

More than 100 churches have been nominated to take part in a national donation project – which is set to be piloted in the Diocese of Carlisle.
Clergy and parochial church council (PCC) treasurers have this week been updated on the scheme, which will see about 115 Anglican churches receive a free contactless giving unit.
Monthly charges will not be charged for the first year, although a small commission will be deducted by the payments processor from each donation, with some units costing £10 per month after this time. ....
