The barge is the larger of two reported to have broken free from the dock. The second one, which had no fuel on board, came to rest on the breakwater. “The [larger] barge is upwelling diesel in small patches but only minimal amounts of non-recoverable sheen have been observed outside of the containment boom,” the coast guard said in a statement. “A local contractor was hired to recover drifting fuel containers from the barge and brought them ashore for proper disposal.” The boom was deployed by Western Canada Marine Response, which was contracted by the barges’ owner. Winds were strong at the time of the incident and weather is believed to have been a factor.
