REPORTER: THE PREBUILT TUNNEL IS PUSHED THROUGH THE EARTH. WHEN ONE SECTION IS IN, ANOTHER IS SLID BEHIND IT AND THE TUNNELING CONTINUES. THIS TIME, IT WILL HAPPEN WHILE DRIVERS CONTINUE TO USE THE HIGHWAY ABOVE THE TUNNEL. >> THIS IS EXCITING WORK WE ARE DOING. WE DON’T DO THIS EVERY DAY. REPORTER: NO ONE HAS EVER DONE IT THIS WAY IN NORTH AMERICA. THE TUNNEL BOXES ARE LINED UP AND READY TO GO, POISED TO BE PUSHED UNDER A RAISED SECTION OF THE BEACH LINE RIGHT NEXT TO THE BRIDGE OVER U.S. ONE. I’M INSIDE ONE OF THE BOXES. IT IS 31 FEET TALL, 110 FEET LONG. 4600 TONS. AND THIS WHOLE THING GOES THAT WAY, UNDER THE HIGHWAY. THE RAILROAD DID A SIMILAR PROJECT THROUGH GOLDENROD ROAD RECENTLY. BUT THAT WAS AFTER THE PAVEMENT WAS REMOVED AND LATER REPLACED WHEN THE TOP OF THE TUNNEL WAS COVERED OVER. IN CONTRAST, THE BEACHLINE WILL BE CLOSED ONLY FOR SEVERAL HOURS OVERNIGHT SUNDAY INTO MONDAY, THEN WILL BE OPEN WITH ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION WHILE THE TUNNELING CONTINUES UNDER THE TRAFFIC. >> AND WE’LL GO FOR 24/7 AND GET DONE IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS. REPORTER: THE $2.7 BILLION PASSENGER ROADWAY IS PROGRESSING STEADILY AND COULD BE IN SERVICE IN ABOUT TWO YEARS.
