As the Wilmington area's population grows, so do long commute times and congested roadways. With this in mind, Wilmington-area officials want to reduce vehicle miles traveled in the region by 10% between 2021 and 2025. That's why officials from the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, representatives from regional major employers and community stakeholders, who make up the committee Go Coast, have been working on a draft of Cape Fear Change in Motion 2020, a short-range plan outlining how to decrease traffic congestion in the area. "This plan is important because it identifies a variety of methods that residents and employers can take to reduce traffic congestion that don’t include expensive roadway projects," said Rebekah Roth, interim planning and land use director for New Hanover County.
