Clayton Streetscape project will include new trees, rainbow

The Clayton Streetscape project is scheduled to be completed early next year, with the final touches including new trees and a rainbow crosswalk.
In January, the old trees were removed to make way for major construction. It will be several months before the new trees are added, but officials say once that happens, there will be more trees than before.
The new trees to line the downtown street include October Glory Red Maples, Avalyn Laurel Oaks, Golden Globe Ginkos, European Hornbeam, Chinese Ironwood, Winter King Hawthorne and Biloxi Crepe Myrtle.
The former trees were not well-suited for their spaces along Clayton Street, and roots of the new trees will be better adapted, according to project updates. The new trees should last decades and their new planters will feature special soil.
