CNN CNN NewsNight With Abby Phillip September 12, 2024

The source, cnn newsnight with abby phillip starts right now tonight, donald trump comparison self to a boxer as maga tries to spin what his own allies consider sure. Okay, you buy kamala harris. Are clearly one of the eight plus nearly 70 million people witnessed the debate on but did the democratic nominee convinced swing states skeptics to be a witness at the polls also from race and rowe to ducks and dogs run spot run. By the lies and conspiracies growing more outrageous israel alarming sign for november and and i can name the world's most famous childless cat lady loves the player but can she sway the game live at the table? scott jennings, ana navarro bryan lanza, and nina turner welcome to a special edition of newsnight, state of the race good evening. I'm abby phillip in new york. Let's get right to what america is talking about. The spin cycle, the pundits there declaring kamala harris the winner of last night's debate. But her campaign says, debates don't win elections. So get out and vote. In the meantime, trump says that he won the debate action chile, but his allies privately are calling it a disaster so with just 54 days now until the election will there ultimately be a rematch, harris is game trump not so much? it's like a fighter. Want a fighter is a bad foot gets knocked out or lose the fight. The first thing he says, we want a rematch we won the debate according to every poll, every single poll i think that are we going to do a rematch? i just don't know that we'll think about joining us in our fifth seat tonight. Olivia nuzzi from the new york magazine, she also recently interviewed donald trump, just this past week. By the way, i wonder olivia, do you think the trump if you talk to him about this before this debate, did you get the sense that he was ready, that he was prepared and when you hear him now, trying to spin a loss as a win, what do you think is the psychology of that? i found him to be remarkably unprepared to talk about kamala harris. He was talking to me about her family history zero point and i and using her father as an example of why she was a marxist and when i said, i think she was not raised by your father. I think she was raised by your mother. He said he really is that right? he was just completely unaware of his amazing because they pretty basic biographical details. When i talk to advisors of his they said he just doesn't like to do the reading i mean, this is something that we've all known about donald trump and it seems as though they failed in their efforts to prep him last night and their efforts to make sure that he did not get riled by kamala harris very easily. He seemed to take the bait every time she tried to elicit a response like that from him. Yeah. I mean first of all, the argument that the losing person is eager to do this again, i'm not sure that that works, but if you were trump, i mean, what do you do it again, no reason and no reason for her either. I don't think either of them have any compelling reason to do this. Harris check the box she wanted debate and for trump, there's look, he's done this seven times, six times. He's lost the debate according to the snap polls. Now all three times the hillary, but he's still won the election. So it's not fatal necessarily. But there's no way you know, absent what happened with joe biden this summer. He's likely to come out and be judged. The winner of a debate. So why do this again? plus, my anticipation is whoever moderates the next one is going to try to outdo the abc moderators and be even harder on him than they were and so there's no there's no way to shut it down so hard on him. In fact, that he spoke for five whole minutes while they came to fact check me. They didn't do it. They're not even really all that close. I mean, they didn't they didn't do it to her speaking time. I know what they didn't do it to her. I'm just saying they're getting a lot of accolades today for beating the crap out of him and leaving her alone. And the next set of moderators i'm sure we do the same. A beating the crap out of him. I mean, the moderators to be honest, i mean, they ask questions. They tried to get them to answer them. Sometimes he just didn't want to answer the questions when you lose a debate, when you don't do well, you blame it on the moderators. You today, they're saying that she had hearings that we're somehow she was getting the answers that he had gotten the rumor that all want to show people what you're talking about here, right? these are the earrings that vice president harris was wearing. Laura coomer, who by thway, he's been hanging around with donald trump, including at this debate she said she suggests here that this was a listening device, right? so to me it's kind of ironic and funny and i can't reconcile. It comes to the one hand donald trump and most of his supporters are saying he won this debate, which is clearly a lie and delusional. But on the the other hand, they are blaming the moderators. They're saying kamala harris had the questions they're saying kamala harris was getting a listening device and it was getting whispered. The answers. So which is it because if you want that unless i'm not saying any of that, but but here's not a lot of his opponent, but here's the fact he, he did get pushback from them. They did try to fact check him in real time, but there were numerous questions that she would not answer and she did tell several lies and got no factchecking. So i think if you're going to lay down a marker that we're going to push back on these candidates. You got to do it to none, or you gotta do it to both. They didn't in fact, check nearly not even close to the number of times that they could have based on the number of lies that trump told, but they did fact check the big ones, the big obvious ones that that should be factchecked. I mean, the idea that somehow the problem is that they put truth on the table seems ridiculous i guess i looked at the debate a little bit differently, sort of not winning in her loser, but, you know, who has, what did each person had to do it? what did we see the trend lines happening before the debate? the american public was viewing kamala harris is extremely liberal, right? when you looked at mainstream, no matter what the media was saying, trying to reset the table and seeing all these great things, the public themselves were able to decide for themselves. This is actually a san francisco liberal with very extreme views that are outside the mainstream. So what was her role, her will at this debate was to prove that she's not a san francisco liberal. I don't think that's a place. I think trump hit on some issues that reinforce the fact that she's a san francisco liberal. I think she herself avoided answering these questions which lead to the suspicion that she's the san francisco liberal. Now she had a strong performance yes. But at the end of day, have any strong performance at the debate, doesn't win an electric one or not. I don't i don't i don't look at the basis winters loses. I looked at what does somebody have to accomplish. So she had to accomplish this, this and this. I don't think she accomplished that look at debates as winners and listen, i've been where you all are, right? i remember what the very sobering, sad, difficult time. It was to admit the joe biden had lost that debate he admitted that he had a terrible night, but you've gotta do you can keep lying to yourself. He had a terrible night because you know why? because he is surrounding himself biologist the problem can be these crazy thanks. He can go and say them onto in 2016, i think everybody said in your from the politics that i knew before donald trump is that he had these horrible bad debate performances as against hillary. And you saw for a couple of days he lost several points and then he regained it and ultimately won. So what we learned through that experiences that no matter what the view is, whether president trump has his bad debate or not. He's not judged on whether he is debate performance like other people are. So i think we go back to whatever trump said, everything that he said, you didn't see all this bag. The bag is going to be election day. We all understand that that's one that's where the winning mount really channel in tom hanks hear his character in a league that arrow there is no crime and base really. I just say she has strong form. She had an extraordinary performance and president donald j. Trump did not adapt. He still does think in his mind and he is running against president biden, the vice president, made it very clear you're not running against joe biden, but he did not adapt. He didn't change, he didn't have any vision. It was all, you know, what is all wrong with america. He could have changed, he could have pivoted, but he didn't take the opportunity to pivot. I will say this when i rewatched it, i will give you guys that some of the questions that they asked and came back at the president with was harsher. More than one more than one thing can be true at the same time, but there is a however, he not i'm curious what did you think was harsh, harsher. I just honestly curious. Well, the fact about her ethnicity question, i think that is why you keep bringing that up, you know, pressing him on that project 2020 2025. Look, the man said he has nothing to do with it. We can debate whether he has something to do with did it or not. They did not own the fracking question to the vice president. And this is me as a liberated she in 2019, when she was running, she said, i'm done with, you know, frack and we're going to do away with it. You can't say you're going to do away with it. They had a dad to write on that. What you can say as a candidate that i'm not in 2019, i'm not 2020. And you know what i've changed my mind. She she i guess the point that's the point. The reality of it is that she reversed herself in 2020, that notion it's not just, you know, making, but it's a fourt week what does that more than one thing can be true at the same time, i'm with president donald j. Trump lost the device and all that that his followers are saying they did not happen. He lost, he was not prepared. He thought he's going to hold those his way in. He wouldn't even look at the vice president. He lost at the same time. I did analyze what the moderators were doing and they did not treat her. That's very sad, checking aside, they asked her directly directly in the very first question, if she thought they had any responsibility for the economic conditions, are that people were better off than they were for. And she completely ignored it. They asked her for on immigration. Why did you wait until six months before the election to do anything? and she completely ignored it and so fact factchecking and barbs aside, those are the two most important issues in the election. They asked her, she completely ignored them, and they spent all their time going after trump and didn't follow up on any of that. I thought it was. I think part of the reason that i was more fat fact checking of trump is because he said more misleading things are outright lies, right? we had our own folks here doing the analysis and in the analysis he did 33 plus lies. She had won misleading statement. That's good. That is that is currently not want to miss that question. Hit pause for a second because there was one that we, that we factchecked last night, but there were a couple of others that we're not either misleading or false. Not 33, but more than one. If you're not going to do a comprehensive fact check during the debate of both candidates. Loud factchecking to take place after the fact, the analysis, i think it interrupts the flow of the program and i think it feeds into a narrative from whatever candidate is being factchecked more that makes the whole event called into question because the abc moderators gave them more, gave more time to donald trump today. I'm happy they gave more time so donald trump because every time he spoke, he said more and more stupid and absurd when we're talking about winners and losers, but we're talking about really small fraction of persuadable voters take away from this, right and those voters are probably going to vote emotionally and they're looking for these candidates to reveal themselves, and they're not going to see this the way that i write in today. That i, that i've barely ever seen after a debate people laughing at a candidate, not with a candidate people there were so many memes, there were so many tiktoks today. There was so much coverage, no, no, no, there was so much coverage curated to you i wanted people in this situation that we're shooting for was false. I bars folks at debate watchers, listening to donald trump and bursting out loud debate watch party that was swing voter who's probably not that invested in politics, if not at a debate, watch party that's which is probably we all wanted maybe that's voters is getting some of the memes of donald trump being on harris. Earlier about what he observed. He played donald trump essentially in vice president harris says debate prep, he did it the same thing for hillary clinton. Here's how he he assessed trump and what he's like right now on a debate stage i did say years ago and i did it now. I've had to watch him and pretend he's to compensating his language, how he thinks, how he speaks. Do you think he's different now than when you were prepping absolutely. Absolutely. He is not carrying thoughts through. I think he's losing trans thought and he's just blurting out the next thing and as mine olivia, i'm going to let you respond to that because you have seen him talk to talk to him or the donald trump who is connecting the beginning of his starts to the end of his thoughts. When, when did that donald trump exists. I've always known donald trump to speak in a strange and it's always a journey listening to him talk no matter what he's talking about, i will say posted shooting. He speaks more slowly he was speaking in a much more quiet and i guess you could say considered way when we were conversing for the story but he sounds to me pretty much the same as he's always sounded. And this idea that there was one since donald trump, who is a great orator who was making a lot of sense. I don't know but if you actually do go back and watch the old debate tape, he is just it's not just the slowness of speech, but he's quick on his feet. He's able to really react much more cool. I mean, the image of kamala harris sprightly walking up to shake his hand and he sort of slowly lumbering he was not for her. Yeah. Alright. Everyone. Hang on, olivia.
