Coast Guard practices “snow landings” Up North with Jayhawk helicopters Updated Jan 06, 2021; Facebook Share TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Coming in for a smooth landing with a 14,000-pound MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter takes a lot of practice. But setting down this kind of chopper in a Michigan winter, when the rotor wash is kicking up enough snow to create a mini blizzard, requires a special set of skills. The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City crews have been polishing these cold-weather techniques during the last couple weeks. They’ve been using unplowed grassy areas in their neck of Northern Michigan to practice snow landings with their fleet of Jayhawk helicopters. They recently posted photos and video of the training on their Facebook page, and shared them with MLive readers.
