LAKE SUPERIOR, MI - After a harsh winter storm blew out a window in the very remote Stannard Rock Lighthouse in Lake Superior, a team from the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Alder recently hitched a ride on a Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City to make the icy repair.
Teams had been worried the missing window could threaten the electronics inside - and even the working light - at the historic lighthouse that sits off the eastern shore of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. ....

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Coming in for a smooth landing with a 14,000-pound MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter takes a lot of practice. But setting down this kind of chopper in a Michigan winter, when the rotor wash is kicking up enough snow to create a mini blizzard, requires a special set of skills.
The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City crews have been polishing these cold-weather techniques during the last couple weeks. They’ve been using unplowed grassy areas in their neck of Northern Michigan to practice snow landings with their fleet of Jayhawk helicopters. They recently posted photos and video of the training on their Facebook page, and shared them with MLive readers. ....
