Seton Hall University Thursday, February 18, 2021 By Nancy Enright Inside the Core this week, we will give some attention to some of the exciting Core III options available to our students. Core III, Engaging the World, is the third of the three "Signature courses" required of students at Seton Hall. It is meant to take the "Journey questions" of Core I, which are deepened through the dialogue of Core II: Christianity and Culture in Dialogue, to the next level, applying them to the world around us and looking at them through the varying disciplines. Eric Johnston Ph.D., Associate Professor in ICSST and Coordinator of Core III, serves on the Signature Course Curriculum Committee and leads the sub-committee that approves courses for Core III status. He is the person who helps faculty navigate the path toward creating the interesting and varied courses that make up the Core III curriculum. Dr. Johnston says, "Professors tell me how much they love teaching Core III. This is the place where we discover the heart of our university, where both the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and the various disciplines of the university come to life by coming together." All Core III courses must be cross-listed with a department, so each one of these courses must also be approved by the home department sponsoring it. This article is the first of several I will be writing for Inside the Core, where we will examine samples of Core III offerings and the wonderful faculty who have created and teach them.
