Woonsocket had 126 new cases of COVID-19 between March 28 and April 3, according to the Department of Health. In general, Rhode Island residents 50 and older are eligible for vaccination, but the state had previously lowered the eligibility age in certain hard-hit zip codes. The Health Department says Woonsocket has the lowest vaccination coverage rate of any community where age eligibility has not been expanded. As McKee announced at his weekly press conference Thursday, the state is making 20,000 additional vaccine appointments available at 5 p.m. Friday. In addition to Monday's expansion in age eligibility statewide to 40 and above, residents 16 and older who live in certain hard-hit zip codes will be newly eligible. Those zip codes are 02893 (West Warwick), 02906 (Providence), 02910 and 02920 (Cranston), 02911 (North Providence), 02914 (East Providence), and 02919 (Johnston).
