From washington journal, this is about 40 minutes. Them washington journal continues. Host we are joined now by rebeca berg, National Political reporter at rea realclearpolitics. Everyone is still talking about this debate on fox news for the republican president ial candidates. Lets start by getting your take on how it went. Who are the winners and losers . Guest it was obviously a big onge, lots of republicans it. It is hard to say if there was one definitive winner or loser. There were people who did a job in the debate that will help them. Some of them may be did not give the strongest performance. I would put Carly Fiorina at the top of the list. She was in the socalled host explain how the debate worked. Guest the format is they split republicans into two groups. There were the seven lowest ranking republicans. It took place earlier in the night, no audience, slightly easier questions. Then, there was the primetime debate among the top 10 republicans. They chose the top 10 by looking at the most recent national polls, which was a source of controversy in the Republican Party because national polling. S based on metrics Carly Fiorina was one of the participants in the undercard debate. She is not polling very high, most people dont know who she is, frankly. She performed very well. Now, a lot of people are talking about her. Maybe, potentially, she could be in the top 10 next time. Host in the primetime debate, of course everybody was talking about donald trump. How did he do . Guest he performed as people expected. There was some thinking that maybe he would come of the debate stage, be a little more subdued. That did not really happened. Brash as donald trump always is. He did not try to start any fights with republicans on stage with him. He stuck with answering the questions from the moderators. The moderators asked some very difficult questions of donald trump, looking at his past stances, and some controversial remarks that he has made in the past. He did get a little testy with those questions from the moderators and got into a personal exchange with megan kelly, which has only escalated since then. Host lets talk about that now. It was news recently there was news recently that donald trump would be disinvited from a gathering. Thereis the statement are lines that politicians should not cross, and decency is one of those lines, in an interview that donald trump gave to cnn he said of megan kelly, there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming , megan kelly has been invited in Donald Trumps place tomorrow night. What is the fallout . My inclination would be to say that he will be less popular among women. Ed to be amp has seem tough candidate. He makes these comments, and people are entertained, or for whatever reason, they are really offended by what he has to say. Instead of going down in the polls, usually he says these things, and goes up in the polls. Basically, he has been the most counterintuitive candidate that i have ever seen. Host has there been any quick polling postdebate to see where the candidates stand . Focus i have seen some groups, and there was one informative focus group that fox aired directly after the debate, and the viewers that he talked to were very turned off by donald trump and his performance. That could be an indication of where we see polling go from here. Host we are take your calls for the segment. You can join the discussion. What do you think of the gop president ial seal and the campaign overall . Were going back to our regular phone lines. Republicans can call 202 7488000. Democrats can call at 202 7488001. Independents, 202 7458002. We are on twitter, cspanwj. And on facebook, facebook. Com cspan. You can send us an email at journal cspan. Org. Our guest is rebeca berg of realclearpolitics. We look to our first call now from robert in arkansas. Good morning to you. Caller good morning. Debatestened to these donald trump is just a distraction from the real issues. This is a very serious issue. Days ago, a fellow working at a plant here in harrison got his leg torn off, and he died on the plant floor. The whole plant has been shut down for three days. The employers are paying everyone to not work. Is getting ready to come in that. On the other hand, all of these candidates that are standing up there, they support what is called free market Free Enterprise capitalism, which means they are allowed to go anywhere. Coke industries is already in malaysia. Cuttingon had ever been inhad a ribboncutting arkansas for vietnam, the same country that americans were drafted to stop communism. The real issue is free market itee enterprise capitalism is for one thing doing more to to get theunism product. Earlier you talked about maternity leave. You know, that comes through the process. When you allow any country to have free access to our markets, and then expect Companies Like this company here in harrison, there is trying to work with its workers, and are getting ready to seek no telling what with osha there is no way you can compete. Host all right. We do have a clip of Donald Trumps exchange with megan kelly that we want to bring to you now. [video clip] mr. Trump, one of the things that people love about you is you speak about your mind, and o not use a politicians filter. However, that is not without its downsides when it comes to women. You have called women you dont s, animals only rosie odonnell. [applause] for the record, it was well beyond rosie odonnell. Im sure it was. The your twitter account has lots of disparaging comments about celebrities looks. How will you answer the charge from Hillary Clinton who will likely be the democratic nominee that you are part of the war on women . , i think the big problem that this country has is being politically correct. [applause] i have been challenged by so many people, and i frankly dont have time for total political correctness. To be honest with you, this country doesnt have time either. This country is in big trouble. We dont wait any more we lose to china, we lose to mexico both in trade and at the border. We lose to everybody. Frankly, often times what i say spun. Dontly, megan, if you like it, im sorry. I have been very nice to you, dont have to be, based on the way you have treated me. E need strength we need energy. We need quic for this, and brain in this country we need ness, and brain in this country. Are speaking with rebeca berg of realclearpolitics. Talk a little more about how donald trump has handled the situation after the debate. What is his relationship with megan kelly looking like now . Guest significantly worse than before he went into the debate. He felt that megan kelly was not treating him fairly in that debate, and maybe in instances prior. Subsequent to the debate, he has gone on to do interviews with other competing news outlets, and now only criticize the way megan kelly is treating him, but you noted the red state controversy or noted the red state controversy or earlier over his comment about her hormonal state which offended a lot of people. Thats what it is right now and hes not winning anyone over fox news. You see a republican candidate go after fox news which is basically is the most Friendly Network of all to these conservative candidates and one where conservatives often try to win over fox news as opposed to go to war with fox news. Usually you see the republican candidates go to battle with outlets like the New York Times and tends to do well for them in terms of fundraising or rallying their supporters and could have an opposite effect. Megyn kelly is popular among the conservatives and the very people donald trump includes in his base. It will sbbing to see how they react to this. Host our next caller is glenn from lancaster, california, from the independent line. Glenn, now youre on the air. Go ahead. Caller good morning. I would like to hear the republicans talk about jobs for american citizens. We lack jobs because of the legal Foreign Workers here that. Re working against the law need to change the knowingly so of our Immigration Law the fines are enforced. And guess what . That will pay for welfare, housing, a lot of things. Plus, american citizens would go back to work right here in our own country where illegal aliens, Foreign Workers are taking our jobs, ruining our schools, our streets. They are jobs we want to do. Host thats glenn from california. Rebecca berg, why didnt the economy play a bigger part in thursday nights debate . Caller thats an excellent question. Guest thats an excellent question. We look what drives voters in president ial elections and economy and jobs are usually at the top, the number one issue driving voters. Especially republican voters, they care about taxation and care about jobs in this election cycle. So i actually thought it was very interesting that this didnt come up more. In terms of economic discussion, we did see a lot of Immigration Reform discussion and obviously there are very major implications for the economy when were talking about Immigration Reform as glenn, the caller just noted, of course people are afraid that their jobs could be compromised if Immigration Reform isnt tackled by these politicians and what we saw talked about more at this debate. The next debate it is safe to say would be more talk on the economy. Host do you see a shift in the issues that will energize the Republican Base in 2016 from the economy to other issues, or do you think its still early yet to get to some of the iscussion . Guest it is early to know because it tends to be a question of what does the economy look like the day the voters go to the polls. Obviously we have the Iowa Caucuses the beginning of february and New Hampshire shortly after that. Its a couple months away still but immigration in terms of the very conservative base republican voters, this has become something of a litmus test. You see how marco rubio, for example, has struggled with this issue after supporting the gang of eight bill in the senate, hes had to sort of work his position over with conservatives. And you saw in the debate he took a stance that maybe was a little more conservative than he has, focusing on building a wall and focusing on Border Security and not focusing on what comes after that and what weve seen from a lot of republicans because this is very much an energizing issue for the base. Host and here is some of what marco rubio said in thursday nights debate on immigration. Marco it is as simple as our leaders are stupid, their leaders are smart and all of these illegals coming over are criminal . Let me set the record straight on a lot of things. The evidence is clear the majority of people coming across the border are not mexico but coming from guatemala, el salvador, honduras and are the source of people coming in as the majority. I also believe we need a fence. The problem is el chapo builds a tunnel under the fence we have to deal with that, too and why you know a e verified system and entry tracking system and all other things to prevent illegal immigration. I agree with what governor kasich said, this is the most generous country in the world when it comes to immigration. There are a Million People who legally immigrate to the units and people feel like were being taken advantage despite our generosity. And let me tell you who never gets talked about in these debates, the people that call my office who have been waiting 15 years to come to the United States and they paid their fees and hired a lawyer and they cant get in and wondering maybe they should come illegally. And so these are important issues and we should address it. Its a verse problem that needs to be addressed. And otherwise were going to keep talking about this the next 30 years like we have for the last 30 years. Host that was marco rubio talking about immigration on thursday nights republican debate. Our next caller is kimberly from pennsylvania on the republican line. What did you think of the debate and what do you think of the candidates so far . Caller ok. Well, i think megyn kellys first question to donald trump was uncalled for. Its as if we are not allowed to even have an opinion or say anything freely anymore. I mean, its better than what bill clinton did, god bless donald for standing up for himself. And as far as marco, this problem has been going on for 30 years. And hes talking about doing it the right way as opposed to letting a bunch of unknowns, whether illegal or whatever, unknown. You have no idea what these people have done or are going to do. Im a strong supporter of donald trump. Hes got what you call moxie. Hows that . Host thats kimberly from pennsylvania. Guest thats what i was talking about earlier, Donald Trumps supporters are very much his supporters. He can say anything so controversial or offensive, but the color that he is word she used was moxie but think hes authentic and like his brash way of speaking. And so i think that is really the wild card in how does this play out in the polls . Do people think that megyn kelly was in fact going after donald trump and unfair to him or do they think that hes not someone with the graph it was gravitaus to be president. So far its been the former, its been giving donald trump the benefit of the doubt. Its a question of when voters will no longer give him the benefit of the doubt. Host dave on the democratic line. Good morning to you. Caller good morning, ladies. I feel megyn kelly got what she eserved from donald trump. I think donald trump stood up to her. Because when i can sometimes stomach to watch fox news, especially her, she is rude and i feel she got what she deserves, and i dont think is hiding that she behind being a woman. She is a news person. Shes an interviewer. And i feel donald give it to her and he give it to her good and im proud he did it and im even a democrat and thats what i have to say. And you have a lovely host thats dave from ohio. Guest this is what we keep seeing. People are drawn to donald trump because he says what he thinks because he comes off as a very strong person because he is so forceful. But is that president ial . Thats the question voters will need to look at. So here is more evidence of exactly what is driving donald trump in the polls and what continues to drive him. And of course i came in here saying i dont really know how this is going to play out. Are people going to stick with donald trump as they have. Hearing these callers, clearly he has a well of support and clearly people tuned into this debate and saw something in him even in the way he was treating megyn kelly that they found attractive. I think this is something that continues to really surprise republicans because you talk to people in other campaigns and you talk to people at the r. N. C. You cant understand what is going on here. Everyone thinks its a matter of when is Donald TrumpsCampaign Going to explode, when is it going to sink itself . Thats not happening even after these more recent remarks. Host moving on from trump in a moment, you covered a bit of New Hampshire this week. Heres a bit of your story. The g. O. P. Got a brief respite from the donald trump show monday but even without the brash businessman onstage, other contenders struggled to hit their stride. Is part of the issue the quality of the other candidates . Hats going on here. Guest there are and we saw it from the debate in cleveland. There are very talented candidates on the stage with him. The New Hampshire forum was a little bit different because it wasnt technically a debate. They did three interview with each of the candidates and it was a bit of a strang
