CSPAN2 David Horowitz The Black Book Of The American Left December 23, 2017

Administrators under siege students retreating into safe spaces, to sum up our former institutions of higher learning, militant irrationality. How did it come to this . The left and the University Volume 8 of and the latest edition to his series of collected conservative writings entitled to black book of the american left. This book contains nearly four dozen essays written from 1993 to 2010 and addresses what David Horowitz describes strategy tragedy of the left, transform entire schools and departments into doctrinal Training Center for social and political causes. This campaign arguably has done more to steer america toward the left of fundamental transformation of the country than any other strategy of cultural marxism. Chronicles the campaign of most of the last quarter century and davids effort to bring political neutrality to college classrooms. You already know david New York Times best seller, radical son, unholy alliance and most recently big agenda, president trumps plan to save america. He knows them better than they know themselves and that makes them threat and invaluable to u us. The author of the left and the university and the founder of Freedom Center David Horowitz. [applause]ve thank you, mark, and thank you, everybody, for coming. Last week i was at the university of houston in houston where the week before they had held a National Conference for enudents for justice in palestine, the university hosted justice for palestine, the creature of the terrorist Organization Hamas and hamas propaganda and i brought along a little clipwo to show you so you can share with me. The founder of hamas, theres no place where jews among us and no future, you are headed to annihilation. [inaudible] it was created by hamas. David, we reject your bigotry. Seven minutes. [shouting] [inaudible] off our campus off our campus free, free palestine that was seven minutes into my talk and i have said at the outset of the talk that when i was a radical at berkeley and colombia in the 60s i always we wanted to hear what the other side had to say because i felt that would make me a better radical, i would have the arguments. Those days are gone. The greatest american tragedy in my lifetime is destruction of educational system by progressives and conversion into indoctrinization and Recruitment Center for the ideological left. This book that i have written, the left and university is the fifth book that i have written about the university and this problem which has been 50 years in the making and it has a special interest because its really dispatches from a war front. Recounts what i wrote engaging in a battle to restore Academic Freedom to the university, to restore the modern Research University to our basically our liberal arts colleges, the principles of it. I based my campaign which was for an academic bill of rights for students on the very famous Academic Freedom statement of the American Association of University Professors which these days are run by stalinists which are not happy by my proposals but i took 1950 statement which was really the9 statement that created the modern Research University basing it on scientific principles and procedures, that is you have hypothesis and confront it with counteropinions and you try to test it by evidence n. The liberal arts field, humanities, all the fields, political science, theres no way of conducting the kind of experiments that scientists actually do, so every issue is controversial. Iny the 1950 statement said its not the place i of a faculty member in a democracy to indoctrinate hisis or her studes but present them with opinions in a fairminded way because the task of a teacher and a democracy is to teach students how to think, not tell them what to think. What actually happened with the left, the political suspect, i suspect a lot of my generation of radicals stayed in the universities andn pursued academic careers to avoid the draft and to avoid fighting communism which they sympathized with. What they have done is reverted the universities, the colleges, obviously not the Physics Department and geology departments but the citizen training aspects of the university all the social studies and so forth. They reverted them to 19th century origins. In 19th century all of our colleges were institutions, they were religious institutions. Harvard, yale, and what they were there for was to instill the doctrines of the particular denomination, because they were training ministers and priests and so forth. Thats what our universities have become today except that the religious doctrine that is they teach and instill are the doctrines of marxism, identity politics which is cultural marxism which i will explain shortly. And for those of you who were mystified that College Students should want to its not just believe me, theres a whole faculty cohort behind these proterrorist students and the antidemocratics students and antilearning students, as i say, when i was a radical, and i considered myself i a marxist revolutionary at the time i wanted to hear what our opponents were saying, i wanted to be able to answer them. I was in school to learn how to do that, thats the way i perceived it. If you want to understand why theres this concerted effort to shut down the other side of the debate its because these are religious institutions now are liberal artst colleges and theyre not feeling with the divergent opinion as one would in a democracy. They are dealing with a religious. What you do to heretics you burn them at the state if you have enough power to do that and close them down as happened, for example, to Charles Murray at the university of michigan and other conservatives. I mean, this is nothing personal, i dont think this is personally. So what happens was beginning in the 1970s, the left saw the universities, instruments of their revolutionary designs and so the fist thing they did was begin a purge of conservatives from faculties by not hiring them basically so that today on mostm College Campuses conservatives are as rare as unicorns. They then c they personalled conservative books from the required reading list, average student goes 4 years of a college and never encountered a conservative adult or read a book byre a conservative who hasnt been dead for a hundred years. The next thing they did was to purged conservative ideas from the curriculum and they did that by inventing what they called studies, american studies, black studies, womenti studies, these are all political fields, theyre not scholarly fields, its about learning leftwing politician. You couldnt be a conservative and women study professor because women study is not about the academic study of women, its about training marxist feminists, its about training students in the thoroughly discredited marxist that the environment determines everything, that we are socially constructed and thats how you get the idea that gender is socially influenced but socially constructed, to go onto Neuroscience Department or Biology Department you learn that its hardwired into the biological system which is obvious to i any normal human being that had brains glued up by leftist ideology. So the fields now are so constructed that a conservative really can hardly be part of them, there are no conservatives in women studies departments. Thats some of the founders of women studies who actually believed they should be about the study of women, you know, have been purged and treated as enemies by the political radicals on our faculties. The next thing that they did was to prevent conservative discourse coming in from the outside. Now, when you come to a campus and you get treated like this, of course, the newspaper there, their entire report was of the demonstration on anything that i said. So, you know, just basically the university was deaf to my presence which was the the purpose the agenda of the left. Until about 2001 i was reminded of this by one to have chapters in my book the left and the university is called ann coulter at cornell, physically attacked when she was speaking and if you think having an orange thrown at you in high speed isnt intimidating, it is. I remember that in 2001i had conducted a campaign, i thought the idea of reparations to people who were never slaves and was a bad idea and actually racist and the indiscretion to say so. When i was invited to speak by College Republicans at the university of california berkeley, i asked the chancellor, i wrote the chancellor and said because i knew that netanyahu, unable to speak in berkeley because of the threats of violence which i couldnt convey and i asked him to introduce me whereas as somebody from his office introduced me just too protect the students and what he did was, he assigned 30 armed guards for my talk, when i had to go to the bathroom before i spoke, six guys in flak jackets proceeded me to the bathroom and kicked open the stool doors and i remember saying out loud, this is an absolute disgrace in america, but when you have University Officials like l tha, theres no way to stop it. You have to expel students who do things like these students did, like they are doing now at reed college where they are demonstrating inside classrooms, they dont want aristotle school. The children were all interested in discussing ideas with me, not attacking me political, but that obviously obviously has has changed. In 2001 people start today get physically attacked. I had a body guard for the berkeley event and i have not been able to go to a college campus, i mean, ive been physically attacked before that. Im trying to think because i visited butler, i did not have a body guard when i was at butler and i was attacked pie in my face which isnt damaging but theres a picture of me of the incident looking pretty pathetic, i was swearing a suit and it was gooey stuff and i have been physically attacked where violence, would hurt me was intended and i could never finish a speech if it wasnt massive campus security. The campuses know they have a security problem, so when i spoke at the university of houston there were about ten cops in uniform and there were two under cover cops in the audience and thats why they marched out because they knew now that they would be arrested if they did anything, but when you go to a campus, thats the atmosphere. Its not an intellectual discourse anymore. Theres not going to be an exchange of ideas, let me say, i have been on 400 College Campuses, only three times have i have been invited by faculty. Once by a dean who got there and hid from me because he was under assault from his own faculty. And the fact of the matter is that there is no i mean, im sure there are decent people on faculties across the country but none of them have the courage to stand up for the conservatives and invite them. Solution to the berkeley problem or any of the problems is for the faculty to ban together and invite conservative and lecture students who come and students to fight for right of free speech, there there are no such people. Thats a huge problem and that is an indictment of the whole university system, the College System and that is part of the complete conversion of the university into a oneparty system and oneparty state. And one of the books i wrote with jacob, oneparty classroom because thats what it is. Its a oneparty state. You get one point of view. Now, one of the consequences of this is the miss education or lack of education of College Graduates now. The percentage i think onethird of millennials think that george bushhi killed more people than joseph stalin. [laughter] 25 of the students who actually know who lennon was a minority, think he was a great guy. I could go on with these things. This has affected our judiciary and you wonder why the media is such a disgrace these day is, its because of the way people is communicated, the Communications Department are training rather than marxism. I have been to the university of texas when i went there in austin, a professor of communications, bolshevik, member of International Social organization which is calling called for dictatorship in america inside the lecture hall where i was supposed to speak was leading chants exactly like the one you saw at the top of my talk here. And i was only o able to contine because it was a vice chancellor who came and this is in the goldold days goodold days and said youll be arrested if you continue the demonstration and took her a long time to stop these. Usually they come in and say, these administrators, they dont say a word to me, but theyll say theres a safe room for people who are disturbed. To show you how far its gotten, a couple of weeks ago i was in washington, d. C. And i called up the chronical of Higher Education and told them i was coming. Now, 15 years ago since i was leaving i was probably the leading conservative critic of what was going on in the universities. The chronical actually allowed me to write a piece for them called in defense of intellectual diversity which is in volume in the left of the university. So they invited me and i was treated to featured on the profile of the front page of chronical because he was a prominent critic. They invited me and i told them that i had a new book which i had review and i sent them a copy so they could look it over. And the arranged the editors scott who had treated me well, fairly, i dont know if it was well, i dont remember exactly, fairly, somewhat fairly, 15 years ago, hes the one that invited me, he didnt show up for the meeting but they had ten editors and reporters, you know, shooting me questions for an hour and then they asked me if i would come, you know, to a room and video tape an interview for ten minutes that they were going to put up right away on their website. When i left, i got an email that they were not going to put it up. No explanation and there isnt a trace n of my visit in the chronical of Higher Education. That is the the intellectual journal, well, you can see, theres no dialogue. No dialogue. So what is the religion that they teach . Very important. The religion is as you all already know is identity politics which is really cultural marxims which i will explain in a moment. Marxism is a view of the world in which society is divided into classes. Remember, the communist manifesto, the history of all societies is the history of class struggles which is bunk but thats what marxists believe. Well, so what you have is two ideas here, actually three, the first is that peoples class is a te determinant factor, they set out the eliminate classes and by eliminate it was the point of a gun which is what they did. Soch you first of all, you erase the individual, our whole society is built on the idea of individual rights and individual accountability. But if you have a marxist view its about classes. This is classical marxism, the marxismi grew up. The second idea is that society is divide today oppressors and oppressed. Theres the ruling class and then the working class. And the third idea is that theres a civil war between these classes and conflict that can only be resolved violently. Now, if you think about it, this had a certain coherent idea and the idea, was, of course, that private property which creates the classes is responsible for all of the social problems, wars, poverty, so forth. So if you have a revolution, the revolution was to take away the ownership and the means of production from the ruling class and put everybody in one class. Well, theres a certain coherence to that idea because you wind up after you eliminated the bad oppressor class where everybody is an equal because nobody is an owner of property. This is a delusional idea and it led to the deaths of 100 Million People in the 20th century. Very destructive. If you take away peoples identities as individual, individual merit, the american idea is so much Martin Luther king, that we judge people by the content of their character, however, cultural marxism, identity politics is a hundred times worse because it sees society as divided into racist, ethnicities, genders and has ridiculous the way they judge who is oppressed and who is original. I dont t know. If you dress yourself up in a dress and have a mustache and, you know, put rabbit ears on your a head, of course, youre marginal. [laughter] just look around you, youre going to be marginal. That doesnt mean youre oh prezzed. Its just a fact. Jews are marginal, marginal throughout t history and persecuted for that matter. This is a very prenicious idea. Based on race, based on gender or based on Sexual Orientation and Oppressor Group and oppressed group and then, of course, the ideology is one of four. Ive discussed this before but it hasnt been picked up by people but needs to be picked up by conservatives. People of color, now people of color is not a group. Its not a group. Theres not an identity of interest. Do you think they had common interest . Do you think pakistanis and indians have a common interest . They are at war with each other. The example i have given is mexico, you have two main ethnic groups, descendants of the conquistadors and the descendants of the indigenous survivors, the oppressed but when they cross the border into the United States, they are both people of color, therefore oppressed, therefore, you know, marginal deserving special interest, special allow answers, you dont look at what they actuallyng do, they break the l, if they break the law, im not suggesting that all mexican this is the leftist of converting whatever you say into what you didnt say but its to convert power on the socalled oppressed groups and deprive oppressive groups. If you look around the world, people of color, beheaders in syria, isis members, they are people of color, these monsters in africa, dictators are people ofof colo
