Did you know your donya . I knew my legs gave out. I did not necessarily instantly feel i was hit, i felt like something hit me but not taking a bullet. When my legs went out and i was down in the gravel and field at second base, i started crawling away, i heard coming from the third basin, i never saw the shooter but i knew that with the gunfire was coming from, so i started crawling away and after about 20 feet i seen pictures of a blood trail about 20 feet long, my arms gave out. I cannot crawl away anymore and at that point i started to pray. I prayed for some pretty heavy things. And he deliver. How long were you out there . It seemed like an hour but it was only a few minutes. I look to the police report, the whole thing mightve taken place in 15 or 20 minute. From when he started shooting until when the shooter was taken out. There was a lot of gunfire, almost a hundred rounds between the shooter and started with david bailey who is my lead detail officer on the United States Capitol Police detail, he engages shooter and crystal on my team that day, she engaged the shooter and both of them were shot from the shootout and still kept going out of. And they kept the shooter away from us which is really what saved so many of us that the shooter instead of being able to pick off all of us who were sitting ducks, hughes engaged in a gunfight with david and crystal and ultimately other virginia Law Enforcement showed up and they took him down. In your book, back in the game you reconstruct minute by minute what was going on so youre laying there on the field, are you still conscious at this point . I could hear everything that was going on and when i was hearing the gunshots probably knew it could be me again and that could be it. So when i was praying i was praying for the first thing that came to my mind that my young daughter, i had a vision of her walking down the aisle alone and i said god please to let her have to walk down the aisle alone. And it was an emotion that overtook me. And then i prayed that i be able to see my family again. And i ultimately prayed that david and crystal were able to carry out their duties properly. And they were. At that point, its unreal how it gave, over me. I did not feel pain which had incredibly Severe Damage internally and i was not aware of any of that i was losing almost all my blood, i showed up at the hospital with a 0 blood pressure. My trauma surgeon told me. Few people make it through that. A lot of miracles on the field that day. I remember everything including when the shooter went down. Brad immediately came, Congress Went from ohio in this combat charge and who is a doctor but served in iraq in dealing with these kind of injuries on the battlefield so fortunately thank god he was there because he knew exactly what to do he looked for the entry wound and look to see if there was an excellent which are wasnt, and to some people that might seemed like a good thing but he knew it was about think he knew insensible going straight through at a broken apart into hundreds of pieces inside of me and tractor all my organs and calls under cause all kinds of internal damage. He took under pressure and cant stop the bleeding. That allowed me too live long enough to get to the hospital. As you write, your femur explodes, your pelvis explodes, severing veins, slicing organs, shredding intestines, destroying digestive tracts making everything leader wants, whole foundation of your body imploded. You just relive the emotion. I found out later that is what happened. I didnt know that my femur was shattered i just knew my leg gave out and when i woke up three days later out of her, that is when they told me what had gone on inside of me and how i almost didnt make it through the night. But a lot of first, a lot of great surgeons, so many things that worked in my favor. It was rough. What is the last memory you have of the day. The last memory i vividly remember brad and my colleagues coming around me and asking what they could do to help and i was so thirsty and asking, i had a gatorade in my bag in the dugout and i told them, i motioned them to it in one of my colleagues got a gatorade imported and i remember maybe getting one tenth of was getting prayed out it was falling down my face and he gave me enough energy to keep going. Once again on the helicopter it seemed it was taking forever in a remember thinking at one point, i dont care where you take me for just take me somewhere, i dont want to bleed out on the ball for periods and then i asked, one of the paramedics on the helicopter for phone second, wife. At that point i just felt like things are fading away and i wanted to share final words with her and cases that. It was a four number, virginia phone so she did not answer, it was six in the morning in new orleans so she did not answer and went to voicemail and i left a voicemail and she kept it for this day and has saturated with anybody. But obviously it was something emotional that you would tell a level if you thought it might be a. Have you listened to it . Dated it is tough. Again its hard to focus on the negative when i know how close i was to not making it into no im here alive and i get to do all the things that i love doing and how very few people in my situation made it out. I know im lucky to be alive. Your phone might appear by your office is a cracked . That is correct. They were initially going to take me too George Washington hospital, it is closer but they dont have a helipad secret only get there by ambulance and of course at 730 in the morning, rushhour traffic and you can imagine they started going and realizing they were not omitted to hospital by ambulance. They saw a helicopter coming back into their fortune they said lets turn back to see if that were him and sure enough the helicopter landed on the ballfield and they loaded me up and four minutes later i was in the emergency room at the start. My doctor said it wasnt a matter of minutes, i maybe had another minute and it was close. Luckily they were able to secure me. Congressman, you won the subtitle of countless euros. He talked about a woman named Susan Kennedy. Susan is a special person. We came in contact with so many angels, people that did so many things to help. Not just me but for my wife, shes in new orleans with the kids, its summer they dont have school so she is not expecting 630 in the morning to get a phone call say husband has been shot out of office. But yet thats a have it. It is kind of like these mixed feelings like this is it real or lifethreatening, a flesh wound, and then finally the surgeon gets on the phone and says you need to get her as soon as you can. And she was able to get a flight and take the kids up to d. C. But she did not know what to some kids and she did not want to tell the kids what had happened because she did not know what had happened and did not want to alarm them. But ultimately friends help secure the kids and Susan Kennedy was at the hospital and she helped courtney to make sure jennifer and her family and friends that had come up had a place to wait and see what would happen to be. Did citizen kennedy take on the security thinking with you . When i showed up obviously security detail but at that point they were not aware, nobody knew if this is a terrorist attack, plotted mass shooting in cesar Capitol Police presence all around any member of congress and they shut things down. When they went to the hospital there was a strong showing of Law Enforcement. Nobody knew what was happening and if this was a larger attack. There were a lot of police around and President Trump and melania came to visit me that same evening and yet the secret service annexing you know it was overwhelming in the emergency room so susan said yes to get out we have a hospital that were running and were taking care of people and you all cannot get away. They went back and forth but ultimately worked it out and she did a good job of making sure they can do their job but the doctors and nurses can do their job as well. Your wife jennifer in new orleans got a call from the president . If she did, he called to say that he was praying for me and her and offered any assistance he cannot and later that night showed up at the hospital with melania and help consoled her. You have no memory of that . Are no memory of that, i was unconscious for a few days and it was not until saturday that he woke up. I remember there was a shooting in all that but i didnt know how bad it was, i wanted to know how dave and chris over i could hear the shootout and i knew there were different calibers of weapons referred so it was not just a shooter. I knew they engaged in. I heard that somebody mightve been hit by was after and i asked how they were doing and i found that they were okay which gave me relief. Crystal was at the same hospital as me so we got to visit a few times in the hospital as we are both recovery. Semi automatic, 40 rounds, 9 millimeters smith wesson, extra clip, 40 more rounds for the rifle and an extra magazine for the smith wesson that is what the shooter had and you write that these bullets into your body at 2000 meters per second period. Pretty powerful weapon obviously. The 762 caliber bullet that hit me, you can take every down without. When i saw the size of the bullet, later they showed me and i said how in my life, it makes you wonder, but again a lot of miracles that day and that was one a detail in the book. Why is that Customer Experience i struggle with that, i knew to tell the story properly and wanted to tell it to the ice and heres the people to see me and everybody on the ballfield. We dont see enough in life of reallife euros in the good things that we know about that we really focus on. Too often it is the negative. But i also knew to tell it credibly after mentioned the shooter and give his partner as well. Ultimately i did and that was a tough thing and i still struggle a little bit about forgiveness because as a catholic i do believe in forgiveness, im not quite there but working together and theres good people help me with that as well. I did feel it was appropriate to mention him and i just wanted to tell some of the other backgrounds of the real positive things. To get better i needed to focus on the positive. I did not look back in the help me a lot to stay focused on everyday, i needed to have all my energy focusing on recovery. I needed to know to walk again and basic skills that we all take for granted that i needed to start over with and was able to in the strength of so many positive influences that got me through and thats why a focus on the positive. You mentioned in your book that retaining control are very important to you. You have a routine in life and everybody has things that they do in my job as a member of congress is a great job but you are scheduled literally every 15 minutes for the things that happened next. Then you come back in your meeting with people and going to different events. It is a routine, a treadmill in a lot of ways but all of a sudden im laying in a hospital room and all that is gone. And wondering if youll be able to walk, i had tubes coming out of me, i did not know if my legs are moving in a canal for arms for the first two dates, the doctors were sure how expensive minor damage was. The oak becomes irrelevant and wanted to see my wife and kids again. And i was able to. And that was all that mattered at that point. It does refocus you on what is important in life. We want to show you video of september 2017. Tell us what we are watching here. Its one of the special moments in my life. I wanted to come back to work after i knew i was going to be able to, and physically worry going to be able to do, the schedule you normally have, if you come back you cannot come back and 50 , you are either back or not. Once i realized i was going to be able to come back to work just to be able to walk on the house floor into the emotion of my colleagues republican and democrat, everybody standing and cheering. It showed you, were part of a family, we battle over ideas everyday and everybody has disagreements with people but i felt strong relationships and to see the love and genuine love that people had in reading for me but i was able to walk back on the house for and its incredibly special moment. One of the characters in your book who reoccurred was a friend of yours name centric. He is right behind me, cedric richmond. My colleague from new orleans, a different and obviously were from different parties but cedric and i got to know each other when we were in the state house of representatives. We became different and the genuine friendship has maintained itself throughout the tomorrow and difference of opinion, there is jennifer waiting. Dave bailey right next to her, my surgeon, so many of the special people who help get me back. Cedric was the first person to show for the hospital. Use of the democrat practice and heard what happened. Somehow he found where we were and he went straight there in his uniform and then jennifer grew up in new orleans he helped her. It shows you, politics can be a roughandtumble sport but life is much more important in relationships are much more important if you build genuine friendships it can still be done. I think there is one of the states, and might be rare but it shows how people can come together and care about what is great about this country. For me there were so many people that reached out and prayed and called me, benjamin, some of the World Leaders that called, they might not have known me that while but they care about what we represent, what congress represents. And it reminded people of what is so special about this country. After all of the disagreements in the things that we can find that we might not like each other about ultimately we love with great about this country and institution. Im glad i was able to share that special moment with everybody else and to show people what is the special and what i got to see, the good in people. One act of evil, we could fixated on that. I think we need to see more of that in this country. And in this world. One year later, june 2018 another video we want to show you. Congressional baseball game, from both the second scalise throws out his first from his knees. The entire infield in the entire field goes over to congratulate him and give him a big head. How about that for the very first pitch he gets a grandpa and throws out a first base. What a moment. Look at the emotions of everybody. They brought me out to play second base, theres the democrat from california who hit the ball and again, to show you how special this is. He hits the very first pitch in a plane second base, i cannot move but they put me as a nice gesture, lets have him out there to start the game and then will take about when the real game starts, lo and behold he hits opposite field industry to me and i cannot really move more than a for either way and somehow i be able to back in the ball and brings a trainee and i knew i saw him running and i said i have to make this plain. Somehow i was able to get the ball to first base and make the turn and then everybody came towards me. If you dont believe in god, how does a moment like that happen. We all studied to hear because i was taught that day but everybody else on her team was shot at by the shooter. And everybody had different emotions and for us it was a relief to say one year after, they put the game when youre after to say we wont let evil triumph over good we will come back and play this game and to be able to have a moment like that into share with everybody else including raul who came over, i appreciated what he did because it showed is not a game its about the commodity and how we can come together. I know you have to leave, but where are you in your recovery, have you changed any of your policy positions on guns and medical care because of this experience . It has not changed maybe fortified what important in life. To me making sure your focus on the things that really matter in your life and clearly i want to make sure we have a work class healthcare system. In this country is still the shining beacon for healthcare. We need to make sure it stays that way. And so many other things that are important. Were in the recovery, and im still using a crutch to walk. Im down to one. Them through the wringer because i pushed them like they pushed me to get better and youve got to keep focused on Getting Better every day and i still have a lot of people praying for me and that does give me the strength to keep Getting Better. One day by the end of the show people will walk in without and maybe i could walk a five k. Or ten k. Like i used to so im lucky to be alive. They are both back on the Capitol Police force. David is back as a team lead and with a special person both of them are, back with Capitol Police and working in some other capacities but to see her in uniform again they still stay in touch and are very close and it will never weaken but again its about something positive, something bad that happened that we also have good things that tt happen and we need to focus more on the good things and that gives us the strength to keep Getting Better. And everybody had different emotions and for us it was a relief to say one year after, they put the game when youre after to say we wont let evil triumph over good we will come back and play this game and to be able to have a moment like that into share with everybody else including raul who came over, i appreciated what he did because it showed is not a game its about the commodity and how we can come together. I know you have to leave, but where are you in your recovery, have you changed any of your policy positions on guns and medical care because of this experience . It has not changed maybe fortified what important in life. To me making sure your focus on the things that really matter in your life and clearly i want to make sure we have a work class healthcare system. In this country is still the shining beacon for healthcare. We need to make sure it stays that way. And so many other things that are important. Were in the recovery, and im still using a crutch to walk. Im down to one. Them through the wringer because i pushed them like they pushed me to get better and youve got to keep focused on Getting Better<\/a> every day and i still have a lot of people praying for me and that does give me the strength to keep Getting Better<\/a>. One day by the end of the show people will walk in without and maybe i could walk a five k. Or ten k. Like i used to so im lucky to be alive. They are both back on the Capitol Police<\/a> force. David is back as a team lead and with a special person both of them are, back with Capitol Police<\/a> and working in some other capacities but to see her in uniform again they still stay in touch and are very close and it will never weaken but again its about something positive, something bad that happened that we also have good things that tt happen and we need to focus more on the good things and that gives us the strength to keep Getting Better<\/a>.
