CSPAN2 Brian Kilmeade Sam Houston The Alamo Avengers July 13, 2024

Our new home. Were so honored and thankful that you guys are here, but were not here for us. All of you probably know Brian Kilmeade from his job hosting fox and friends, yeah. [applause] it is the most popular morning cable news show on the planet for 213 months and two weeks and four days, is that right, brian . Yes. Okay. You might also know brian from his nationally syndicated radio show which the Brian Kilmeade show which is on almost 150 radio stations across the country and talkers magazine called him one of the 10 most important talk radio hosts in america. And between, get this, everybody, between tv and radio, brian is on the airwaves six hours a day five days a week and, yet, hes found the time to write a string of New York Times best selling books. George washington, secret six. Thomas jefferson and the triplee pirates, Andrew Jackson and the miracle of new orleans. All told his books have reached 2. 5 million readers around the world. Which is fairly impressive. [applause] and these are history books. Its impressive. His latest book, which were celebrating tonight, is sam houston and the alamo avengers. Its yet another best seller. It debuted last week as number three on the New York Times best seller list. [applaus [applause] unfortunately, the list just came out and hes not at three anymore, hes at two, so. Congratulations. [applause] thats pretty awesome. If you havent read it youre in for a treat and i have got good news for you tonight, youre taking home a signed copy of his new book. We are so honored to have him tonight and hes going to speak to us for a minute, a couple of minutes. He told me he might take a few questions if youre kind to him and so, welcome back to the best seller list, brian. Thank you so much for being here. [applause] thank you very much. Hey, thank you all for coming out tonight. I really dont know anybody, so, but you all seem very nice, welldressed and wearing basically the same type of blue which is somewhat scary, but Dylan Martinez has done an incredible job leading the way with the publicity, you could of the best book, you could have the best edge m message and best story, but youve got to get it out there. And so many good books right now. You have to have the right plan to launch and so far ive never and this is my sixth book overall. My fourth one was sentinel. Ive never had things hit on all gears like this for this long. So weve been out for about three weeks and were just doing the best we can to get the word out. So it was great, christian, thanks for hosting this for me. I was a little reluctant to do it because to come into washington in the middle of the week and come here, he goes, listen, it will be worth it. Youll come out, but to see these offices and so the professionalism and know that you guys are drinking and eating for free makes me feel better. [laughter] because we dont want you eating in washington d. C. , its jacked up. Right. Its good to see things so calm in washington these days, not much happening and great to have a history book out where you have a historic impeachment trial happening and everything every minute is more compelling. You go to the restroom and you miss four major story. I dont, im going to rush through this speech if you know what im saying. So my goal has always been to tell to get away from politics with this. Theres enough trump, bush, clinton, obama books out there. Theres nothing i can bring new to the city that they dont know intimately. My goal is to tell an american story in the way that jon meacham, douglas brinkley, they do it, and i close them and i know for sure i cant do that. I want to do major figures in history and you open up the cover and know more about the people who made them great. Like many people in this room you do great things on a daily basis without fame and acclaim. America is made up of socalled average people doing extraordinary thanks without a pat on the book. These people were known in their time, but not in our time. If you open up George Washingtons secret six, i love washington, great. When you close it you think of a longshoreman, austin rose, a bartender, you think about abraham, a farmer. When you open up jefferson, triplee pirate. I love jefferson. But do you know about William Eaton . My goal is this, when you leave here today if youre at the water cooler, the sports bar, hanging out at a tailgate when people challenge you and say americas history. Everybody is prout of their history, every country is proud of their past, thats fine, but were an exceptional nation and i want to give you more prove and illustrations to go to bat with. When i was born in america, i hit lotto and every day we have a chance to play in the super bowl and end up in canton, all we want is a chance to be successful. We doesnt want this thing guaranteed. We dont want baby bucks, we dont want guaranteed 1,000, we just want the landscape cloud the best we can to have an equal chance of being successful. If i thought i could tell those stories maybe you can take that away. And while were doing this, were trying to find another story after Andrew Jackson and i went to texas. Anyone here from texas . Woo. You guys are proud of your past. And for texas, they had their thing going, the lonestar state. Adidnt look at until 1800 texas was wide open. And it was up to moses to bring the deal. And austin was. He brings 300 families. America come to the new world. People wanted a new shot after a new shot and all they wanted was maybe a chance to be successful and see what texas had to offer. So he they got a gun, a rake and a plow and make a living. They were able to grind out and stand up for liberty. And if you knew about sam houston, he should have been president. He was not perfect, but met boo i a guy like Andrew Jackson. And i believe in the rocky movies, because i believe, theyre based on a previous story. And how great when you see the rocky movie and they flashback to the other movies, how great im in this theater. And in new orleans, we tell the story of the battle, battle that was fought and told us at school, but didnt. The british if they won, they were going to keep new orleans, and turn over the Louisiana Purchase. And then sam houston and Andrew Jackson, im able to start there. In 1814, sam houston, you talk about courage, he was shot three times, and when he goes to washington close to here, ive a waze app and im able to see just about everything. Burned to the ground. How does it pay off 18351836 he had to take on the toughest man in america at the time and do something that they didnt want to do, run away. Weve got to get set for one battle and were not prepared. As theyre running away, gathering them and shaping the battlefield until he finally sets up in the end during the battle of san jacinto i thought i could arm you with another great story about this country even though it seems were pulling each other apart. When i tell you how bad it was and how close we were to destruction, you wont look at Rudy Giuliani in the ukraine. Although its hard. Why dont we take a short timeout, the audio visual portion, not only free food, but a free movie. Four minutes. Lets watch sam houston and the alamo avengers. This is how it aired on fox news. 1776 america independence, the United States was born. Almost six decades later, another daunting fight for freedom loving independenceminded americans, the odds of success, just as long, stakes just as high. This time it was mexico and the battle for texas. In the 1830s, texas was an independent state of mexico. And santa ana took power. These guys were ready to fight. Whoever would control san antonio would control that interpart of texas. With once you started having colonel travis and james, and at the alamo with the volunteers, santa ana thought it was an easy one. Texas army, disorganized would take over. And the general, he was at the revolution before it could take root. And they would decide to stay along with colonel William Barry travis. And one of the most famous men in america, Davy Crockett was under his command. And Davy Crockett and travis decided its freedom or death. Courage is something thats different in every person, but most people are not courageous alone. You get courage from the people youre around. If the people around you show optimi optimism. For 15 days they fought furiously. In 1500, some say over a thousand casualties. And from travis to crockett, who was supposed to intimidate sam houstons forces, it didnt. Weeks after the alamo massacre, the battle flashes here to this fort behind me where 400 men led by west point dropout jim gannon to engage. Sam houston didnt want to see it happen. His orders were not heeded. Hes caught in the middle of an open field. After brielt , a brief fight, they were allowed to live, he trusted him to hold to his word, and he didnt. They were marched out and executed. Sam houston had to give one of the most unpopular decisions in his career, take his men and escape. And its a war of attrition. There were formations and strategies at which time they come to sam houston and his texas army looked at it and said, if you go through that limb i can go to the american border and get more troops and maybe rest my guys or make this decision, follow that limb and go to san jacinto where a santa ana and his mexican army would be waiting. After much deliberation, sam houston decided to finally fight. The first and on time that santa ana and sam houston would face off. The war of 18 minutes. Why 18 minutes . The amount of time for texas to overwhelm a mexican army and achieve total victory. Wait a second, the Group Annihilated at the alamo, massacred at goliad. Its probably the most lopsided in history. It would change a country and soon change the world. One thing is pretty clear, we have to get our reenactors in better shape. These were lean, muscular jn waynelike characters, but i give them credit for showing up that day, its fantastic. I know you had to suspend logic and santa ana was captured and instead of hank hanging him from the highest tree, they said sign over texas and courage has to be calculated and revenge calculated and they ended upholding on to santa ana and bringing him to Andrew Jackson and would oversee he went back to mexico and harm us for 24 more years, but that was the story. So thats sam houston the alamo avengers and its off to a pretty good start. I believe its the texas victory that changed history. And we moved south and west from that. And jackson believed that texas came in the Louisiana Purchase and he could not believe that president monroe and secretary of state John Quincy Adams signed it over in exchange for florida. We dont talk about that, but back then that was one of the hottest issues in the country and i thought by going back and reclaiming it and understanding it and explaining it that people would start being, tapping into their patriotism again. When i did George Washington secret six, i studied that for 20 years and hoped people would be interested and then Thomas Jefferson and the triplee pirates, first war on terror, people can relate to it. Andrew jackson, a 13yearold who loses his entire family and raised by his town, his county, his country and hoping people to relate to it. By the time this book comes out im on a mini mission to push back on those who dont understand how great this country is. I have no problem saying that. Were not perfect, but whats great were trying to be. The reason we argue and fight we do something our parents told us not to do, we argue in front of strangers. When its said and done, we have the same goals, different ways of making the country is it better place and i would also like to take questions from you guys if you have any and also tell you that i do have to be up at 2 30 and be on the air tomorrow so its going to be fun in new york. And also encourage you if youre ever around orlando, jackson, mclane, virginia, and a few more stops, were going to be going for the next few months and see if we can tackle donald trump, jr. Hes got a head start, hes got a famous dad who is on twitter now and he tends to push the book a little bit. No, but don is a great guy and a great book. So with that, anybody have any questions . Yeah. To write this book [inaudible] all right. Okay. So let me explain something to you. Im a met fan. Right . So, its very tough to root to others, and im not a yankee hater. Youre a national guy, right . Well, im a. Okay. The nationals, enbraced that team fantastic. On a serious note i used to do all sports radio and what happened in 2017, with the yankees up and losing 43 and a revelation what the astros were doing in 2017. Its an interesting time. I dont know how baseball is going to get on top of this. If im the dodgers, im not too happy. If im the yankees im not too happy so, and then they beat them again, with the whole sign stealing thing, so baseball cant get out of their own way. It seems. Really, okay, good. Its the first, thank you. Yes. Whats next . I dont know, im wide open. I have to do something in the four or five weeks and do a book and im going to retire and have the Retirement Party right here. Im trying to find a slice of history that you know the headline, but you probably dont know the detail, so ill look for something, something on the inside. But a special thanks to fox. They let me do an hour special on the alamo. While other channels are doing something on impeachment. I was able to go sam houston and the alamo avengers and fox nation let me do the series. Travel the country and do 21 is separate documentaries over the last 18 months on the country, things you dont know or forgotten and thats been a great experience. Yes. [inaudible] well, i mean i started as a sports guy because i thought that was my quickest way to get on the air and it probably was, when i wanted to take a break since i dont golf and have few friends, i would open up a history book and that was i was passionate for. To be honest i never thought i would write one ever. And when bill oriley wrote his great books and were from the same neighborhood in long island and i told him i had stories ive been working on he said youve got to write that. Instead of saying, i do history at fox, he if youre doing standup and you never close, but an inordinate loud laugh before the close, leave because youre never going to watch it. And for 20 years tell this story, literally, i dont have a backup. And when it was so suck is he is successful. Were knee deep in the war on terrorism and afghanistan and iraq, whenever anybody writes with perspective, they go jefferson dealt with it first and led me to the Jefferson Library and university of virginia and gave me some original documents. And i said let me try that. Next thing you know, im going jackson and standing at pinkston talking about the alamo. So im the im an accidental historical author who is passionate about it. Yeah. [inaudible question] here is what it is, now, i know they were shooting each other back then. I get it, there were duels just as angry, but there was a sense of service, more after sense of service, its got to be more about the service and the country. And sam houston is the best example and we just decided do this in the paper back. Sam houston told them were not going to civil war, he quit. Lincoln reached out and ill give you money, if you want to get texas back. We dont want texas in the confederacy. Theyre all about keeping the country together. Jackson was outraged that the northern states didnt want to join the war of 1812 because he was about the country first, outraged to South Carolina wanted to secede and its all about country first. And politicians today have to say whats better for the country not the party and i have a radio show, i have a belief that compromise will be in soon and youre going to need some cover, i get it. Whether trump wins or if someone on the democratic side, that is somewhat moderate wins, that theyre going to sit down and do immigration, and theyre going to do health care because what do we know . We know that no matter how brilliant you think your Health Care Plan is or your immigration plan is, as soon as the other party gets power they are he going to tear it up and tear up yours, youre going to tear up theirs, nothing is going to get done. Were going to have to do this thing called compromise and i think it will become in vogue soon, do you think im right . You dont . Yes. Brian, do you remember the alamo . Yes, and ill tell you this, i wanted to go beyond the alamo with my second feature fox nation asked me to do was the alamo, how do i do it to the broader audience, 49 states, when i got there i felt as if i told it comprehensivcomprehensi happened to it, before and after there might be a market for it. I love the guy that phil collins, the number one fan of it, from genesis, and Stanley Mcchrystal joined us in a special and he says that military colleges still study it, that 180 guys could hold off 3,000 plus for 13 days and if they got a couplemore, they might have won. And jim bow whyieie jim bowie, if he didnt have scurvy or whatever it is. [inaudible] have you ever had a sparring match with a guy he kicked me in the thigh. Hes got a thing you can to his house and what you do, you make a right at the helipad. And he brings you do there and spar with him. What youre alluding to, i did the first four ufc, i didnt fight this them, i called them and i watched before they were weight classes, before there were divisions, if you won you go back to the locker room and fight four times for a championship and to see a sumo guy weighing 450 pounds, maybe 600 pounds and go against a 180 pound guy in the netherlands and have the first shot knock out two teeth and land on jame browns notes it was an interesting experience. I was one of the first guys in the octagon when first designed it. And they wanted me to do an interview, do you want to say that someone could die tonight . No, im not saying this. But john is a killer. If youre going to start with him, get a hotel room, hes going to fight you all night. [inaudible question] okay. Jo he ever all, because i dont want to put well, firstoff, ive got to firstoff shes a producer on the radio show and everything, shes pregnant. Wev
