Those for the changes we want to see to become possible talk about climate how do we talk about it . More importantly what do you want to be talking about . During the conversation even make your own video and invite your friends to join you. In the San Francisco bay area those that inhabited the lands we did you share your questions at climate one. In todays conversation for the podcast every friday and subscriber every you get your pods. The environmental icon. Aaron brockovich was household name with her fight for a small town was on the big screen 20 years ago. Julia roberts played the paralegal who brought Pacific Gas Electric to its knees spent dont dream about being rich but watch their kids women appalled that they dont have to have hysterectomy. Now shes on a new case in texas. A reallife superhero. A cancer cluster getting the attention of a wellknown environmental advocate Aaron Brockovich. What about that michigan how did you find out . From the Community One year ago they contacted me. We will find our way. Thank you for climate one. I want to share with everybody with the state of california and oregon hoping they are staying safe and well i hope everybody takes care of themselves. You had a son the had to evacuate in oregon how are you doing . Im in Southern California i was part of the rules the fire we had the northern paradise campfire and then the woolsey fire so my differences are up and very alert very very smoky the air quality is not good. Watching up north and over again it is worrisome and sad and matthew is fine right now but taking it pretty hard. Writing about fossil fuels and thinking about Climate Change theres Something Different as we believe that into our lungs and how we are experiencing Climate Change spirit thats an interesting question because we are experiencing it not an isolated situation where one part of the state seeing is believing. Climate change is difficult because you cant see it if you think of climate and looking at the two headed fog in the green water and that visual meant everything to me. I talk about Climate Change a lot and i had a picture sent to me two days ago up and chico it was dark. It was orange and a moonscape. And visual. We have seen of powers and australia and experience them on the west coast. A weather phenomenon you can almost visualize a tornado or hurricane or fire. What does that have to do with Climate Change. Thats an up on a frustrating question but climate is water part of what is happening here so we have left water and we talk about in the book in south africa they would literally have no water so Climate Change is too much water and not enough water or no water or drought its gearing up and is always better but the conversation is getting bigger because you are visually experiencing and seeing a result and its frightening and the losses could be great i hate to say at the movie to mr. I dont know who saw it for paxson is waiting for the storm coming and the reference you can see it its coming. And bill paxton at that moment stops and says its already here. I think its becoming real you can is coming in or drowning i think its here. I know that sounds also struck with Rachel Carson and a quote that saying that superman is not coming but that there is a power to alter and that is a battle that will not be won by a sinister trying to continue to alter that rather we look to ourselves and master and alter our solutions and actions, and it just amazes me that she said this in 1963 and what was happening in the sixties and where did we not hear her warning because Climate Change will be about preparedness and defending ourselves. And not just thinking because you cant see it it will not happen. Host does that mean power is in word because so much is about changing other people other parties, other states , am i hearing you say look in word first rather than shaming people like that quick. Absolutely be foolish for us to think whether as republican or democrat or the industry of the fossil fuels this will be something that collectively will drop that and Work Together so the threat or the fingerpointing or the namecalling is not serving any purpose other than getting two sides to stand down i want to break through that we all have to have a seat at the table. Heres what i think is frustrating we do have the technology and companies can step in and work with the people is the inward moment i will not engage in this but i will how i can get you to come together and Work Together for a situation on this plan affecting us all it doesnt matter your Party Affiliation so it matters as we recognize it and then to work collectively on this issue on the entire planet which is the entire human species. We had a racial reckoning and in 2017. Nation that filed a lawsuit against the only Gas Companies with wastewater injection sites what is the case about. And the biggest significances those that are not listening to them they feel suppressed and oppressed. And with those economic faster factors and to have access to school or education that they have been underestimated and to set aside. They are collectively trying to find their voice. In the nation was terribly affected by the earthquakes coming from the fracking and left and forgotten so they went out to represent them and we see these issues playing themselves out. And we talk about that in the book. And to talk in a laymans terms but then we will take action. But the water has been impacted and they feel very forgotten and in a moment you seen on the ground for 20 years its very hurtful. They were back off for a while because they are convinced their voice dont matter and feeling that they are less than and how they are treated. And that has been my gift to be on the ground to be see and touch and note that this is happening and they start to find that and that is key to have the support of us and the community. So they were very impacted and that lawsuit is still ongoing to get recovery because they were devastated. L if you benefited from White Privilege . Oh my gosh. I have been blessed in so many ways. Born and raised in lawrence kansas. And enjoy the freedom and outdoors and access to good health and education i am beyond blessed and then with clean water and land and air in the republican man from kansas in here in the pipeline that i know he saw things and he taught me the greatest gift we all have is clean water, clean land, air to breathe, our health and her family. Host that was very sweet one day lori turned on the tap in her home and brown water came out in Southern Arizona how is that a cautionary tale . It is a big one for a lot of reasons. Is have to collect my thoughts or i could talk for the next two hours on this issue. We share a collage of photos that come in from every single stay in the United States and multiple cities. I have not been wrong but you cant argue with me all day i will tell you from six right around one ppm what color it will be it has a color in water. Then when we see the brown water and the dirty water and the blackwater often we have oil and gas or tank farms leaking and people will water. And people across the board were seeing these watercolors because we are adding ammonia to the system and not treating the dirt appropriately at the municipality. It is worrisome generally there is lead we have 18 million miles of pipeline of wed pipe what one lead pipeline to address infrastructure so the color tells us infrastructure issue, issue, pollution, bacteria, led and that the water is not being treated appropriately at the municipality. The best way to explain it when you Start Talking scientific i cannot deal with this. They almost glass over. What . We had a meeting robert, a guy work with one of the greatest experts around and i am not kidding, he was talking about organic matter and i could just see the audience go what is that . Like organic tomatoes. So i said what is organic matter . He said dirt. Everybody says i get that. Is water content it has dirt in it they have to add chlorine because we dont want to have e. Coli. What a lot of people dont know we need to know our water and understand water and when we do so the organic matter and chlorination have a very toxic compound which is a form of methane regulated by the Safe Drinking Water act if we would follow that will make it balance the system and cannot keep those thms control the appropriate rotation on filtration system but we want to do think shape and take shortcuts. You cannot take shortcuts on waters adding ammonia to the system can reduce chlorination less effective in the whole situation happening in the Distribution System which most people dont realize is unregulated. A lot of stuff goes on in there. And with the lead pipes and causes them to have the iron in the manganese to make out thats what you see coming out of the pipes that come with it is the lead. So thats a huge issue. And change adding ammonia and follow the Safe Drinking Water act and guidelines for filtration we would save infrastructure which is in great need of repair. Will have to do something about infrastructure. And less legionnaire outbreaks definitely see more legionnaire outbreaks more lead contamination in the congressman has been amazing that from flint michigan. And that you could test for lead once every four years and average the sample. What . And then with that discoloration and then getting back to basics. And with the structure and safety. We have a question asking about artificial turf replacing grass and letters a concern made from old tires your take on artificial turf as a replacement quick. Thats a great question many soccer moms come to me those kids have been on artificial turf the mercury and the lead and a lot of issues going on and the offgassing and the children those playing football with cancer there are some big studies going on there would be a lawsuit to push back on that im glad somebody has to. It was out of the blue. You are correct would be better to play on good old natural grass that is something that many universities and schools and then will stop doing that. And then on the lifestream climate want is Aaron Brockovich author of the new book supermans not coming so speaking about water and how is Electricity Generation . It is very important. The hydro man. Host and a lot of power plants are located near the water for cooling. Yes pollution and mercury and chrome six. We have been in a lot of that with electricity and water in the issues they cause we been successful to stop that other communities not and we talk about that. And with that site and then use it for allow them to allow contractors on campuses the 300 cases were tied to the wells but the judge ruled they were unproven in the School District was reimbursed for half a Million Dollars of legal fees. But then overreaching with financial incentives. Your case was not proven. There was a lot of arguing with science on that. I had that conversation with the attorneys. The issue for me was energy and the cooling towers that sit right on top of the campus and here is the ball field so we have the oil Derrick Beverly hills School District has recently come back to me and asked me to help because now they removed the oil derrick write about that issue theres a lot of Directional Drilling that goes on. And in a time frame of ten years its way more than 300. Its over thousand looking at these patterns in these numbers and they all have cancer . That is something that needs to be looked at. So at the time we were assuming and believing the oil derrick was causing these issues. I did allied of testing and we were finding high levels of benzene but the science was a big argument in court. And then they ended up settling and i believe had to be focused on the chromium and the cooling tower they were been a better correlation of the illnesses. So the oil derrick has now been removed but guess what . They have a big problem they are quite well aware there is a huge methane issue they are concerned of the subway coming through and underneath the school what could happen . It just doesnt make sense to me. And with the Third Largest oil reserve it was just nothing but oil derricks and it seeps out under the school and high levels of methane and having your children go to school on top of that now with assembly with methane explosion just is not a good idea. That is what happened there and then i had a second part to answer that. What really spoke out about that. And people should know that superman is not coming so they could better defend their children and this is happening in upstate new york and its a huge cleanup process of mercury and pcb and these chemicals they want the school shut down and they are making big progress and it did settle anderson way people think that but that is not what was going on. There is a real pollution problem a real chrome six problem real people real students and kids they have been impacted and there is more than a thousand. 17 million americans live within an active mile of oil or gas well senators killed bill to plan drilling within a 2500 feet of schools some of those Democratic Senators received 150,000 from oil and Gas Companies. And then to get a buffer zone where is the status of the buffer zone particularly School Schools . I think we should and you will see more about it and a better result because they are starting to speak up and speak out and that is a big huge game changer there is always a mom she says i dont like that i dont like the oil well dont have to sit here and get into a scientific debate on the issue is an oil derrick is an oil pipeline we know what oil is you worry about benzene and offgassing you just dont want that close proximity to your children and the school so real change will come from the conversation the rise of moms and parents and Community Getting and even at a local city Council Level to say this is what we want and what we were demand for the safety of her children. In addition to fighting the good fight is a way to protect ourselves and our homes from questionable water purifiers what does the average person do. Thats a great question. Know your water source, know your municipality and if you havent been getting a Water Quality report in your bill call them and get it if you dont know whats in your water each chemical response to resin or carbon or coconut shell we always said reverse osmosis can be one of the best ways to protect yourself at home whether a home system , countertop system or under the sink there are concerns with that the minerals are taken out you could add that back there is a question as you dispose of the reverse osmosis canister how to dispose of those chemicals but it is one of the safest ways to protect yourself at your cap. One your cap. The smell of coronation. That alone will not clear out if you have any earbuds which is a firefighter home or chromium or tce. Know your water. Know what is in your water and you can begin to make the appropriate steps what type of filtration that you would need to have at your home to better protect yourself. And putting the iconic water contamination story with a lot of racial discrimination. It there was most of the funds when people who are under the age of 18 at the time of the crisis. That was a settlement. Do you think i was a just settlement. I see these communities. I still talk to people out in hinckley. Yes, the money in the settlement is a form of justice. Influence, having a grand jury and those who knew. And they said nothing. And you see them resentenced. To be reprimanded for that egregious behavior has been some justice. The National Attention in the media and the story rising has been some justice. And when they money it feels like some justice but is very bitter sweet because the scars are less especially for the children of flint and their future or neurological problems or learning disabilities. In the money is there to help how we can and how family can get them the appropriate care they needed. Her tutoring that they needed. In getting them on with life. And for them, ultimately justice wouldve been that this never happened. Everybody in hinckley is the same way. What good is the money going to do you what i have cancer and im going to die. We should clarify, the movie came out 20 years ago. Hinckley was a town where you got your start and was portrayed in the film. Chromium sickness. In flint, they changed waters. In the way pg e was a perfect storm. It was groundwater, wealth water. The pg e, hinckley california Erin Brockovich film. That was a corporation. Knowing and hiding the information. This is my father always taught me, deception. That is the root cause of so any of our downfalls. In flint, that was note perfect storm. The switch river water. And they knew, the women of flint contacted me. One here before anyone really knew what we know flint to be today. I have to be out of the country. And sometimes you have to read between the lines with somebody is saying to you. I was like, no. No, this is not right. So senate over to bob who i work with as a water expert. Email me back and he said, i am leaving tomorrow. And we had an entire water protocol and what not to do. But they did it anyway. And they knew. That is such a sock in your gut. Really, we will talk about will get a corporation to do that. With the idea that your municipality or anybody in the health department. Hard in an agency all of the way up to the governor. They were not in fact informing you of that. That is really a slap in the face. A lot of people would say
