Danny Manning is back in the college coaching ranks.The former Wake Forest head men's basketball coach joins Maryland as an assistant coach.The news of Maryland men's hoops adding Manning as a coach comes almost exactly a year after Wake Forest fired him.Manning served as the Demon Deacons' head coach for six seasons, five of which ended with losing records. His only winning season was 2016-17 when the Deacs finished 19-14 overall and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.Danny Manning struggled in his most recent coaching stint at Wake Forest, but he doesn't lack high-level basketball experience.Manning, a former Kansas Jayhawk, is considered one of the best college basketball players ever. His resume is nothing short of legendary: NCAA Champion (1988), consensus National Player of the Year, All-American, No. 1 overall NBA Draft Pick, and College Basketball Hall of Famer. After a decorated college career, Manning played 15 seasons in the NBA. In that span, he was a two-time NBA All-Star (1993, 1994) and the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 1998.His ties to the Triad go beyond Wake Forest. Manning is originally from Greensboro, N.C.He was named to the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Manning played basketball at Page High School, leading the Pirates to a state title at the Greensboro Coliseum in 1983.The move to Maryland reunites Manning with his former Kansas teammate, and current Terrapins head coach, Mark Turgeon.Manning spent the past year as a college basketball analyst at ESPN.
