CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Central Virginia’s lawmakers are now back to work for this year’s meeting of the General Assembly. It’s a race against the clock in this year’s short session, further compounded by the rule that delegates only get to introduce seven bills, a limit introduced to help deal with the technological shortcomings of legislating from a distance due to COVID-19.
Delegate Rob Bell (R-58th District) is focusing on some key changes for mental and behavioral health and ID laws for Virginians with special needs. One bill, H.B. 2236, aims to transfer supervision in cases where the person on the behavioral health docket does not live where they were in court. Bell says it’s a stop-gap until all jurisdictions in Virginia have a behavioral health docket, but will help both people in the system access treatment where they live, and will allow for easier supervision of the process.
