Texas cities are opening back up to full capacities, but many residents are still struggling to pay rent and deal with other economic consequences from the pandemic.
The Texas Rent Relief program, launched in February, aimed to help those who lost jobs or the income that allowed them to make their payments on time, but has garnered harsh criticism and backlash for its slow roll out of payments and application approvals.
According to the Texas Tribune, by the end of March, the program had received more than 72,000 applications, but issued just 250 payments to Texans in need. A report this week from Spectrum News shows that number has now risen to 22,000 households who have received payment and 29,000 more in the pipeline.
