it's no question that our country has a history of racism and slavery. how do these comments fit into that history? >> well, i think it's very important for americans to take a very close look at where we are today, because as you mentioned, we have a long history of race discrimination. it's an ugly history in this country. slavery, jim crow, segregation, racially motivated lynchings. but we've also made tremendous progress. this country has eliminated slavery and jim crow segregation, reduced lynchings, passed anti-discrimination laws and public accommodation and housing. and affirmative action and education and employment and most recently elected and re-elected our first black president. but progress doesn't mean that race is no longer a significant factor. and president trump's comments simply reaffirm that nogetion.
