died of hypothermia. abc's neal karlinsky is following the latest from the park. >> reporter: this is all playing out up the road from the main entrance here at the mt. rainier national park. it becomes very rugged and steep just a few miles up the road here. a collective sigh of relief among park officials when word came down midday that the gunman was found dead, face down in the snow. identified as benjamin colton barnes, a military veteran. officials say he spent the night hiking through chest-deep snow in very rugged terrain pursued by at least three s.w.a.t. teams in snowshoes along with multiple aircraft with heat seeking cameras to find him. police say he shot and killed a park ranger, a mother of two, before firing on other officers and running off into the woods. for a time, more than 100 men, women and children were hunkered down inside a visitor's lodge here. they were actually guarded by armed s.w.a.t. team members for their safety before being taken out under police escort. the gunman has been found dead. face down in the snow. fortunately, before he could hurt anyone else. neal karlinsky, mount rainier
